Austin Stephens, Miles (AL), Player News

At the start of this decade, the Miles football program was hardly on the radar when discussions were held about which school would win the SIAC title in a given season. Fast-forward to the end of the decade and there can't be a conversation about who the best team is in the SIAC without saying Miles. Donte Edwards (3 touchdowns) and the defense dominated on both sides of the ball Saturday to help the Golden Bears win their second consecutive league title with a 21-6 win over Albany State in the SIAC Championship Game. The win set the school record for victories in a single season. Miles became the first team in the SIAC Championship Game era (since 2011) to win consecutive league titles and the first school to win consecutive titles since Tuskegee ended a run of four straight titles in 2009.

The Golden Bears (9-2) also closed out their dynastic decade of dominance with a fourth championship in nine years - three of them since 2015 - to go along with five Western Division crowns in that span. It is also important to note that Miles may still have more work to do. The NCAA Division II Football Championship field will be announced on Sunday afternoon and it is quite possible that the Golden Bears will hear their names called as a participant for the second time in school history, joining a trip they made in 2012. - SIAC Football

SIAC PRESEASON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Austin Stephens, Linebacker, Miles College,...Stephens, a senior linebacker, was picked as last season's Defensive Player of the Year and returns for his fourth year with the Golden Bears. The Munford, Ala. native led the SIAC in total tackles (120), which is currently tied for seventh in Division II. Stephens had 14.5 tackles for loss, one sack, an interception and a fumble he recovered and returned for a touchdown.

He also earned one SIAC Defensive Player of the Week award. Stephens became the first-ever player from Miles to be named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II All-American Team and was the only SIAC selection in the 2018 D2CCA All-Super Region 2 Football Team. - Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football
