Walter Fletcher, Ball State, Player News

In the lead-up to the 2020 NFL Draft, Walter Fletcher felt confident that by the end of that weekend in April he'd at least receive a shot as an undrafted free agent. Fletcher had earned Division II All-America recognition during the three years he spent at Edinboro prior to transferring to Ball State. The running back had showcased his versatility at the Division I level at BSU, running well in addition to catching the ball out of the backfield and returning kicks. He had even earned a spot in the 2020 SPIRAL Tropical Bowl in Florida. But, as each of the three days of the draft came and went, Fletcher didn't hear his name called as teammate Danny Pinter would. In the time that followed the draft, Fletcher wouldn't see an undrafted opportunity arise as teammate Ray Wilborn would. And Fletcher still hasn't.Fletcher hasn't lost hope, though, nor has he given up on his dream. "It was definitely a tough three or four days," Fletcher said. "I just felt like, personally, I had a lot of people rooting for me. You put in so much time and effort the last two months leading up to the pro day, and then even the draft … I feel like I just fell short after everything that I've been through and worked for. I just felt like I fell short and it was hard to push through that and get over that. But, I know that hopefully one day I'll get an opportunity." Fletcher would later add: "It's just a matter of when that call will be and just staying ready." - Star Press
