The Bears' preseason has been graced with some good news: The NCAA granted defensive lineman Luc Bequette the ability to play a seventh year. Bequette will return from a brief stint at Boston College to the place where he started his college career - Ber keley, California. Bequette played in 11 total games for the Eagles last season but got his start at Cal in 2015 before transferring in fall 2020. During Bequette's most recent season with the blue and gold, he was part of a defense that was ranked fifth in the nation by Bleacher Report, and he earned 52 tackles. The skilled lineman will return to Cal at the age of 24. With his age comes experience, and it's expected that he'll bring this and more to the Bears' defensive line. - Daily Californian

The Cal defensive line could get a boost with the return of Luc Bequette who played at Boston College last season after five years at Cal. Bequette, now 24, saw action in 42 games at Cal, starting 38 of those from 2016 through 2019 after redshirting as a freshman in 2015. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility for the 2020 season after playing just four games in 2016 before being injured. When the conference suspended the season in August, Bequette opted to go to Boston College so he could get in a full 11-game season. Bequette started all 11 games at defensive tackle for the Eagles, totaling 18 tackles, with three tackles for loss, two forced and one recovery. He decided to take advantage of the NCAA allotting players and extra year so he'll be a seventh year college football player being showcased on a team known for its defense. - Arizona Republic

While college football toiled this summer over the question of whether the sport would be safe enough to play amid the COVID-19 pandemic, defensive lineman Luc Bequette found himself stuck in limbo. When rumblings started to surface that the Pac-12 might be among the conferences unwilling to play this fall, Bequette had to consider whether he wanted to stay at Cal and risk missing an entire season or if he wanted to explore other options. "You're hearing all these things that the Pac-12?s going to cance l the season, but then you're still kind of holding out hope and the coaches are also trying to hold out hope," Bequette said.Bequette had started 38 straight games over the past three seasons. He was granted a sixth year of eligibility after losi ng all but four games of his redshirt freshman season because of an ACL injury. He never imagined the possibility of not being able to play it out. "For me, personally, I was going to play this season no matter what - if it was in the Pac-12 or any other conferences playing," he said. His father was the one who initially urged him to start considering options. "He was telling me I needed to start transferring immediately before I got all the information," he said. "I am a pretty loyal guy, so I was goin g to wait until I got the official notice that the season was canceled before I was going to look anywhere else." - Boston Globe

A double major at Cal (legal studies and American studies), he was granted a sixth year of eligibility after playing only four games as a redshirt freshman in 2016 because of a lower-body injury. Last fall, in recording a career-high 52 tackles, four tac kles for loss, and three sacks, Bequette was the recipient of the Brick Muller Award as Cal's Most Valuable Lineman. Bequette has a strong family lineage to Arkansas football and athletics. His father (Chris), grandfather (George), uncle (Jay), and cousi n (Jake) all suited up for the Razorbacks, with the latter carving out a four-year playing career (2012-15) on the defensive line for the Patriots. But arguably the best athlete in the family is Bequette's mother, Debi Thomas, a bronze medalist in figure skating for the United States at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary and the 1986 world champion. Another fun fact: As a 12-year-old, Bequette won the C-U Little League Home Run Derby in Champaign, Ill., before the family moved to Arkansas. Boston College head football coach Jeff Hafley announced the addition of former Cal defensive lineman Luc Bequette (pronounced luke beck-IT) to the 2020 roster. Bequette, a graduate transfer, will be eligible to play for the Eagles in 2020. Bequette is o ne of five transfers to join BC since Hafley was hired in December. The Arkansas native was granted a sixth-year of eligibility for the 2020 campaign following the 2019 season, getting a year of eligibility back for a 2016 redshirt freshman season in whi ch he played in only four games before being injured.Bequette played in 42 games over the last four campaigns after redshirting as a true freshman in 2015 and started all 38 contests over the past three seasons. His Cal totals included 130 tackles , 12.5 tackles for loss (-57 yards), 10.0 sacks (-53 yards), three pass breakups, three passes defended, four forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, four quarterback hurries and one blocked kick. - Boston College Football
