With NFL teams prevented from working out players in person during the pandemic, Conrad had few options to continue his playing career as a free agent with no game experience. His list of options was cut even further because many teams were unwilling to overlook the heart issue, even with Conrad's cardiologist's clearance. "I think I'm done playing football," Conrad said. "It just got to the point for me where I just didn't want to sit around and wait anymore. I'm content and happy with my career as a c ollege football player and my short time in the NFL, especially with my body going through four surgeries in college. I think I was a little checked out, ready to move on with my life. This was something I really, really wanted to pursue."Conrad h ad first talked to Stoops about possibly joining the staff as a graduate assistant toward the end of the last season after he had been cut from the Giants' practice squad. That move was put on hold when the Giants signed him to a reserve/future contact i n January, but the team cut him again after the draft in April. Luckily, Stoops still had a spot open on the staff. "I always wanted to be a college coach," Conrad said. "I didn't know how soon. Obviously, my NFL career got shortened a little quicker tha n I thought it would." - Courier Journal
