Auburn has lost its second center of the season with Tate Johnson slated for surgery on his left elbow. Tigers coach Bryan Harsin said Monday that Johnson is scheduled for surgery on the elbow Thursday and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks but could be out for the season. Jalil Irvin replaced him after Johnson went down with the injury against Missouri. Avery Jernigan has also worked at center. Johnson had taken over after sixth-year center Nick Brahms retired from football just ahead of the season opener after attempting to return from knee surgery. Harsin said quarterback T.J. Finley will practice this week after missing the Missouri game with an injury to his right shoulder. Robby Ashford started in a 17-14 overtime win and is listed as the starter on the depth chart going into Saturday night's game against LSU. - AP College Football

Geoff Collins is out as Georgia Tech's football coach, fired Monday in the midst of his fourth season after failing to make headway with a brash plan to turn the Yellow Jackets into a national powerhouse through branding and promoting Atlanta's big-city culture. Collins was officially dumped during a meeting of the athletic association board two days after a 27-10 loss to Central Florida left him with a record of 10-28 at Georgia Tech. Brent Key, the assistant head coach under Collins, was appointed interim head coach. He doesn't have much time to settle in: The Yellow Jackets are at No. 24 Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Collins, whose team is 1-3 this season, finished with a winning percentage of just .263 - the lowest of 13 full-time coaches in the school's history. Bill Lewis had been the only Yellow Jackets coach to lose his job during a season. He resigned after a 1-7 start in 1994 when it became clear he would be fired. Collins was the third Football Bowl Subdivision coach to be let go in the opening month of this season, following Scott Frost at Nebraska and Herm Edwards at Arizona State. Georgia Tech also dismissed athletic director Todd Stansbury, who hired Collins and provided steadfast support even as the losses mounted. Frank Neville, chief of staff to university President Ángel Cabrera, will take over as interim AD while the school begins a search this week to fill both positions. Collins is due a buyout of at least $10.5 million, the full amount remaining on the final three years of the seven-year contract that brought him to Georgia Tech from Temple ahead of the 2019 season. - AP College Football

Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter, still bothered by an ankle injury that limited him against South Carolina in week three, played only one snap - at fullback - in a 39-22 win over Kent State. Coach Kirby Smart said "It's a nagging ankle injury...It's tough for defensive linemen because you're dealing with 500-600 pounds of pressure." The 6-3, 300 pound Carter is ranked No. 3 overall by NFL Draft Scout with the next defensive tackle being Clemson's Bryan Bresee at No. 13. - Georgia Football/Frank Cooney-NFLDraftScout

Wisconsin tight end Clay Cundiff is unavailable indefinitely but hasn't been ruled out for the season. Cundiff was carted off the field Saturday in the Badgers' 52-21 loss to No. 3 Ohio State. In the injury report released Monday, Cundiff is listed as unavailable for the Badgers' upcoming game with Illinois due to an injured left leg. But he's not among the players out for the season. Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst declined to offer a timetable for when Cundiff possibly could return.

Cundiff injured his leg as he went down after making a catch in the final minute of the first half at Ohio State. As he was carted off the field, just about every Wisconsin player left the sideline to greet him and offer support. It's the second straight season in which Cundiff has been carted off the field with a major injury. He dislocated an ankle, broke his fibula and tore the deltoid ligament in his right leg last year in a 27-7 victory over Iowa, knocking him out for the rest of the season. Cundiff came back from that injury and caught two touchdown passes in a 17-14 loss to Washington State earlier this season. He has nine catches for 142 yards to go along with those two scores. - AP College Football

Defensive back Javon Bullard's status for No. 1 Georgia's Southeastern Conference game at Missouri on Saturday is uncertain after he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Coach Kirby Smart said Bullard must appear before a committee that includes athletic director Josh Brooks. "Disappointed in Javon," Smart said Monday. "Hate it for him. He has a wonderful family but made poor decisions, and it will be dealt with internally." Smart said there is "still a lot in the air there" regarding Bullard's status.

Bullard has started in three of four games at the "star" defensive back position. He has seven tackles. Bullard was arrested by University of Georgia police in Athens early Sunday and charged with seven misdemeanors, including failure to maintain lane and holding a wireless device. He was booked at 4:57 a.m. and was released on bond less than four hours later. Bullard, a sophomore, had three tackles in Georgia's 39-22 win over Kent State on Saturday. He had 12 tackles as a backup in 2021. - AP College Football

SEPT 26 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Middle Tennessee QB Chase Cunningham keyed Middle Tennessee's first-ever win over a ranked opponent by throwing for a career-high 408 yards on just 16 completions (25.5 yards a completion). It went down as sixth-most passing yards in a game at MTSU and just the eighth 400-yard game in school history. Cunningham had completions of 98, 89, 71 and 69 yards, with the 98-yarder matching the longest in program history. Cunningham's yards per completion mark was 25.5 and the NCAA single game record is 22.9, but the minimum cutoff is 22 completions, so Cunningham fell just short of an NCAA record.
