Freeze revealed Monday that senior defensive tackle Elisha Mitchell and redshirt senior safety Isaac Steele, both of whom were scholarship players, have opted out of playing this season because of the spread of COVID-19. Steele's decision to opt out is significant in an already thin secondary that has been plagued with injuries in the past two weeks. Safeties coach Corey Batoon said Steele was able to play all three safety positions - free safety, rover and strong safety (nickelback) - and was a veteran presence in a group that includes JaVon Scruggs (Appomattox) and Benjamin Alexander. Scruggs, rover Tim-Kidd Glass and cornerbacks Emanuel Dabney, Isaiah Avery and Hunter Goetz have missed practice time in the past week with undisclosed injuries. The lack of depth, particularly at cornerback behind Jimmy Faulks and Chris Megginson (Heritage High), has forced the defensive staff to move junior college transfer Marcus Haskins from safety to cornerback. "We're rotating Haskins over there, too," Freeze said. "He's learning both safety and corner." - Lynchburg News and Advance

Syracuse football defensive back Allen Stritzinger has submitted his name into the transfer portal, a source told The Post-Standard/syracuse.com. A senior, Stritzinger becomes the most experienced Orange player to officially explore other options this offseason. Linebacker Juan Wallace has committed to joining Kent State while linebacker Kadeem Trotter is also in the portal.

Stritzinger appeared in 29 games over the last three seasons, serving as a reserve corner/nickel from 2018-19 after starting his college career at running back. A Detroit native, Stritzinger logged 27 tackles over the last two seasons and made a highlight interception in SU's Camping Bowl World victory two years ago. This spring, Stritzinger was listed as the second-team Rover in first-year defensive coordinator Tony White's 3-3-5 system. The Orange only got three practices in before campus shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic. - The Post-Standard

Notre Dame (Ohio) running back Jaleel McLaughlin and West Texas A&M all-purpose player Tobias Harris headline the 2019 AFCA Division II Coaches' All-America Teams announced today by the American Football Coaches Association. The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. What makes these teams so special is that they are the only ones chosen exclusively by the men who know the players the best - the coaches themselves. McLaughlin earned his second straight AFCA First-Team All-America honor as a sophomore by leading the nation in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and scoring. He has 2,190 yards, 28 rushing touchdowns and 13.8 points per game on the year and has helped lead Notre Dame (Ohio) into the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs.

McLaughlin broke his own Mountain East Conference record with his 28 rushing touchdowns in 2019. Harris led the nation in punt return yards with 436 and finished second in combined kick return yards with 1,007. He broke the school record for single-season and career punt return yards. As a defensive back, Harris led West Texas A&M with four interceptions and recorded a career-high 68 tackles. - American Football Coaches Association

NOV 25 MISSOURI VALLEY CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: QB Nathan Mays, Youngstown State, 6-3, 220, Sr., Urbana, Ohio (Urbana),...Mays played the final snap of the Penguins' season finale against Illinois State on Saturday. Mays came on the field less than three weeks following surgery after he suffered a career-ending injury against North Dakota State on Nov. 2. Mays left the Stambaugh Stadium turf that evening against the Bison on a golf cart. On Saturday, he put on his YSU uniform to be honored during Senior Day then sat on the bench for the next two-plus hours. With the Penguins' impressive 21-3 win over Illinois State clinched, YSU called timeout with 10 seconds left.

Mays was carried to the Penguins' huddle by Myles Douglas and Matt Jones. He took a snap from Jones and with the assistance of two teammates took a knee as the clock ran out. It wasn't planned entering the game, but it happened. Mays went to Coach Pelini during the game and said if it's a possibility, can we make it happen. Coach said "yes". Mays then dressed on the sidelines and went out to finish off his career under center and not on a golf cart. That's football. That's sports. The end-game scene has been shown throughout social media and on TV across the country. - Missouri Valley Conference Football

Joe Alessi ran for 103 yards and the Youngstown State defense shut down Illinois State for a 21-3 upset over the FCS seventh-ranked Redbirds on Saturday. Penguins coach Bo Pelini earned his 100th career win, including 67 at Nebraska. Braxton Chapman and Joe Craycraft completed 12-play drives with short touchdown runs and Zaire Jones returned an interception for 30 yards and a score for the Penguins (6-6, 2-6), who snapped a three-game losing streak in their season finale and perhaps ensured that the Redbirds (8-4, 5-3) will not receive a first-round bye for the playoffs.

Both teams committed three turnovers, but Illinois State managed only 142 yards total offense and were 0 for 12 on third-down conversions. Two Redbirds quarterbacks were 3-of-16 passing for 30 yards. The Penguins had only 83 yards passing but 187 on the ground. On the final play of the game, Youngstown senior quarterback Nate Mays, who was knocked out for the season against North Dakota State on Nov. 2 with a leg injury, was helped out onto the field to take the snap and take a knee. - AP College Football
