  2021 CONFERENCE USA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): WKU DE DeAngelo Malone is now a two-time winner of the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year Award (also won in 2019), becoming the fourth player in league history to take home those honors twice. Malone tied for the C-USA lead with 16.5 tackles for loss and ranked second with eight sacks. He ranked 12th in C-USA with 88 total tackles, although that number leads the nation among defensive linemen. The Atlanta, Georgia, native is tied for the league lead with four forced fumbles, which is also ninth among all FBS defenders. Malone went wire-to-wire in 2021 after being voted the league's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year by the league's head coaches ahead of the 2021 season. - Conference USA Football

  2021 CONFERENCE USA NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): WKU WR Jerreth Sterns is the conference's Newcomer of the Year after his record-setting season for the Hilltoppers. Sterns' 137 receptions (a single-season C-USA record), 1,718 yards and 14 touchdowns led all league receivers. Sterns is the national leader in catches, receptions per game (10.6), receiving yards and receiving yards per game (132.2). Sterns, a native of Waxahachie, Texas, has 57 more catches than C-USA's second-leading receiver and 39 more than the second-leading receiver in the FBS. Entering the Hilltoppers' bowl game, Sterns ranks seventh in FBS history with his 137 catches, just 21 behind the record-holder Zay Jones of East Carolina (158 in 2016). - Conference USA Football

  Bailey Zappe threw four touchdown passes - all in the second half - and Western Kentucky spotted Marshall 14 points before pulling away for a 53-21 victory on Saturday, laying claim to Conference USA's East Division crown. In a game between the top two teams in the East, the Hilltoppers (8-4, 7-1) ran off 36 unanswered points to earn the right to face 15th-ranked UTSA in the conference championship game on Dec. 3 in San Antonio. Western Kentucky managed just two field goals by Brayden Narveson and trailed 14-6 at halftime. Zappe came out firing in the third quarter. He hooked up with Daewood Davis for a 47-yard TD just 1:19 into the third quarter.

Zappe followed that with a 14-yard TD toss to Malachi Corley before firing a 50-yard scoring strike to Davis midway through the quarter. Narveson added a 53-yard field goal and WKU led 29-14 heading to the fourth. Zappe's final TD toss was an 8-yarder to Dalvin Smith 52 seconds in. Davion Williams capped the scoring for the Hilltoppers with a 45-yard pick-6 in the final minute. Zappe completed 25 of 48 passes for 328 yards with no interceptions for WKU. Luke Zban was 16-of-25 passing for 123 yards and a TD for the Thundering Herd (7-5, 5-3). Rasheen Ali carried 24 times for 97 yards. Marshall quarterback Grant Wells completed his first 10 passes but left the game after getting sacked and fumbling the ball away in the second quarter.   Bailey Zappe passed for 470 yards and six touchdowns as Western Kentucky rolled to a 52-17 victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday. The Hilltoppers (7-4, 6-1 Conference USA) lead the East Division and travel to play second-place Marshall in the regular-season finale next Saturday. Zappe had a 1-yard TD toss to Jerreth Sterns to open the scoring and connected with Mitchell Tinsley for an 8-yarder as WKU grabbed a 14-3 lead. Zappe hit Joey Beljan for a 3-yard TD before Teja Young picked him off and returned it 62 yards for a score — pulling the Owls (5-6, 3-4) within 21-10. Zappe answered with a 3-yard TD toss to freshman Malachi Corley and Brayden Narveson followed with a 26-yard field goal to give the Hilltoppers a 31-10 lead at the half. Zappe completed 39 of 49 passes with two picks. Tinsley finished with nine catches for 164 yards, while Sterns caught 12 for 143.   NOV 15 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WKU QB Bailey Zappe completed 34-42 passes for 482 yards and five touchdowns (compared to only one interception) in his return to Texas on Saturday, as WKU defeated Rice 42-21. Zappe's 482 passing yards were the most of any FBS quarterback last week, and the most by a C-USA quarterback since Zappe himself threw for 523 vs. UTSA on October 9. Zappe had seven completions of 20+ yards and 20 completions of 10+ yards in the win. Zappe was 20-27 for 330 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone, as the Hilltoppers carried a 28-0 lead into the break. Zappe's day was done at the 8:43 mark of the fourth quarter after throwing his fifth touchdown of the contest; and the Davey O'Brien and Maxwell Player of the Year semifinalist rested the final two series of the afternoon. - Conference USA Football

  NOV 15 MAC EAST DIVISION SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Michael Mathison, Akron, WR/KR, Sophomore, Covington, Ga.,...Mathison put together a career game versus Western Michigan rolling up a career-high 273 all-purpose yards, including a career-best 161 yards on kickoff returns, with a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Mathison returned four kicks for 161 yards, highlighted by the first kickoff return for a TD for a Zip since Dashan Miller raced 98 yards against Syracuse on Oct. 24, 2009. His kickoff return brought Akron within three, 17-14, in the second quarter. Offensively, Mathison registered his third 100-yard receiving game of the season, equaling a career-high eight receptions en route to collecting 112 yards through the air. - MAC Football

  Bailey Zappe threw five touchdown passes, including three during a four-minute span in the second quarter, and Western Kentucky beat Rice, 42-21, on Saturday. With two games left in Hilltoppers reguar season and leading Conference USA, Zappe leads the nation with 42 touchdown passes. He has thrown at least three touchdown passes in every game this season and has thrown five or more scores in a game four times.

Kye Robichaux capped a seven-play, 97-yard first-quarter drive with a 2-yard run for the score and the game's first touchdown and Zappe threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter, including a 65-yard strike to Mitchell Tinsley. Zappe completed 34 of 42 passes for 482 yards and was picked off once for WKU (6-4, 5-1). Tinsley finished with 10 catches for 198 yards and Jerreth Sterns caught seven for 92.   Bailey Zappe threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth as Western Kentucky won its fourth straight game, knocking off Middle Tennessee 48-21 on Saturday. Zappe, who entered leading the Football Bowl Subdivision by averaging 425.9 yards per game, completed 29 of 50 attempts for 281 yards. He has thrown 37 touchdown passes to put Western Kentucky (5-4 4-1) atop the East Division of Conference USA.

Nick Vattiato threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to DJ England-Chisolm on Middle Tennessee's opening drive to put the Blue Raiders (4-5, 2-5) up 7-0, but Zappe answered with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Daewood Davis and a 5-yard strike to Malachi Corley. Beanie Bishop picked off a Vattiato pass and returned it 43 yards for a score to make it 21-7 after one quarter. After Vattiato fired a 36-yard scoring pass to Yusuf Ali in the second quarter, Brayden Narveson kicked a 35-yard field goal and Zappe hit Mitchell Tinsley from 10-yards out to make it 31-14 at intermission. Vattiato was 24 of 41 for 205 yards and two touchdowns but was picked off five times.   NOV 1 CONFERENCE USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WKU QB Bailey Zappe completed 33-of-45 passes (73.3%) for 393 yards, with four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in WKU's 45-13 win over Charlotte on Saturday. As the Hilltoppers led 35-13 at the end of the third quarter, Zappe was already 30-40 (75%) for 361 yards, with all five of his total touchdowns. Zappe did throw two interceptions for the first time this season – one of which was a dropped ball by a receiver that popped into the air and was grabbed by the defense. Overall, Zappe is 279-391 (71.4%) for 3,407 yards (FBS-best 425.9 yards per game) with 33 touchdowns (leads FBS), compared to only six interceptions (one every 65.2 attempts). Zappe has thrown for at least 365+ yards and three or more touchdowns in all eight games so far this season.   Bailey Zappe threw for 393 yards and four touchdowns - giving him 33 on the season - as Western Kentucky battered Charlotte 45-13 on Saturday. The Hilltoppers (4-4, 3-1 Conference USA) remain tied with Marshall for the lead in the conference's East Division, while Charlotte (4-4, 2-2) suffered a second straight lopsided loss. Zappe, who came into the game leading the nation in touchdown passes, got right to work, lofting a corner fade to Oregon transfer Dawood Davis for an 11-yard score seven plays after getting the ball. He added a 13-yard TD pass to Mitchell Tinsley, a 21-yarder to Jerreth Sterns and a 9-yarder to Dalvin Smith while completing 33 of 46 passes. Zappe also ran for a touchdown on a 2-yard keeper. He was intercepted twice in the first half. James Foster, starting in place of the injured Chris Reynolds, completed 13 of 25 passes for 118 yards with an interception for Charlotte.   Bailey Zappe passed for 384 yards and three touchdowns and Western Kentucky pulled away in the second half to beat Florida International 34-19 in Conference USA play on Saturday. Western Kentucky (3-4, 2-1) scored on its last three possessions of the first half to take a 17-12 lead into intermission. Adam Cofield erased a 6-0 deficit with a 3-yard TD run. FIU regained the lead on Max Bortenschlager's 75-yard first-down scoring strike to Randall St. Felix, but Brayden Narveson kicked a 22-yard field goal and Zappe connected with Mitchell Tinsley for a 32-yard TD with 17 seconds left and the Hilltoppers never trailed again. Zappe hooked up with Jerreth Stearns for a 20-yard TD on WKU's first possession of the third quarter and he hit Stearns for a 2-yard TD on the Hilltoppers' first possession of the final quarter for a 31-12 lead.   OCT 18 C-USA OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WKU WR Jerreth Sterns continued his incredible receiving run in WKU's 43-20 victory at ODU, as he totaled 13 receptions for a career-high 221 yards and career-long 74-yard touchdown. Sterns became the second Hilltopper in program history to eclipse the 200-yard receiving mark and first since 1995. He had eight catches for 188 yards in the first half alone, as WKU took a commanding 30-3 lead into the break. In a three-game span - against undefeated Michigan State, undefeated UTSA and the Monarchs, who previously had the No. 2 defense in Conference USA - Sterns has accumulated 46 receptions for 602 yards and four touchdowns.
