NOV 25 CONFERENCE USA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WKU junior DE Deangelo Malone spearheaded a WKU defense that held Southern Miss to its fewest points at home in six years, as the Hilltoppers took home a 28-10 victory in Hattiesburg. Malone had two tackles for loss, including 1.5 sacks, and seven total tackles on the day. But his biggest play of the game was forcing a fumble on a strip sack, then recovering the fumble and taking it into the end zone for a 5-yard scoop-and-score touchdown in the fourth quarter.

It was WKU's first fumble return for a TD since 2014. Earlier in the game, Malone set the Hilltoppers' single-season record in the program's FBS Era (since 2009) for tackles for loss. With 20 tackles for loss on the season, Malone is only the 11th defender in WKU's 101-season history to have at least that many. With 10.5 sacks, Malone is only the fourth defender in WKU's 101-season history to reach double-digit quarterback takedowns in a single season. - Conference USA Football

  11/09/19 - Ty StoreyrSr/2020, Western Kentucky, 6-1, 225 (DS#52 QB) + More +

Ty Storey, the son of a football coach and school administrator, has stoically answered questions from the media since his days as a high school All-American quarterback. It's how he was taught. And while his words stayed dry and plain after he led Western Kentucky to a 45-19 win over his former team, Arkansas, on Saturday, his expression belied those remarks. Storey, who lost his job as Arkansas starting quarterback in 2018, transferred to Western Kentucky after that season. His performance against old mates -- 22 for 32 for 213 yards with a touchdown and two more on the ground -- was the primary reason he gained his redemption.

As to whether he felt some schadenfreude, the facade cracked with a toothy grin and a touch of blush. "I'm playing for WKU. I hope the best for them," Storey said. "I hope they win out and do what they can. Right now, I have too much to focus on in Bowling Green." Storey was the most heralded in-state quarterback recruit Arkansas had netted in a generation. He was a Parade All-American and two-time Gatorade and Wendy's Player of the year in the state. And while it may have taken five years, he made an impression on the Razorbacks. He also may have been a harbinger of Arkansas coach Chad Morris' future. Arkansas didn't stop Storey or the Hilltoppers one time in the first half. Touchdown drives of 42, 75, 59, 73 and 68 yards paced Western Kentucky to a 35-7 halftime lead. - Western Kentucky/AP College Football

Adam Cofield sprinted 71 yards on fourth down for a touchdown with 2 1/2 minutes left and FCS top-ranked North Dakota State claimed its 28th straight victory with a 23-16 win over South Dakota State on Saturday. The Bison (8-0, 4-0 Missouri Valley Conference) were inches short of a first down when they handed the ball to Cofield, who popped through the line and raced down the right sideline to snap a tie. North Dakota State's defense did the rest, stopping Pierre Strong for a 1-yard loss and sacking Keaton Heide twice before the Jackrabbits (6-2, 3-1) came up way short on a fourth-and-23 razzle-dazzle play.

Chase Vinatieri kicked the two of his three field goals in the first quarter to give the Jackrabbits the early lead but North Dakota State scored the next 16 points on a Griffin Crosa field goal, a 59-yard run by Ty Brooks and a 6-yard TD pass from Trey Lance to Ben Ellefson. Heide's 3-yard TD run tied the game at 16 with 7:22 left in the game. Strong rushed for 120 yards for South Dakota State. J'Bore Gibbs, the starting quarterback for the third-ranked Jackrabbits, left the game with an apparent leg injury in the first quarter. - North Dakota State/AP College Football

Southern California running back Markese Stepp needs surgery and could miss up to five weeks due to an ankle injury suffered against Arizona last weekend. Trojans coach Clay Helton said Monday that Stepp will need surgery to repair a torn ligament and is out at least three weeks. Stepp, a redshirt freshman from Indianapolis, has rushed for 307 yards and three touchdowns in six games this season. The 6-foot, 235 pound Stepp had provided a physical presence to complement the spread passing component of the Air Raid offense over the past three games before he was hurt in the third quarter of USC's 41-14 win over the Wildcats on Saturday.

Stepp's injury is the latest blow to USC's depth at running back. Redshirt junior Vavae Malepeai, who leads the team with 406 yards rushing and four touchdowns, remains out after undergoing knee surgery last week. Junior Stephen Carr did not practice Monday after sustaining a hamstring strain against the Wildcats. Helton did not know if Carr, who has 266 yards rushing and two touchdowns, would be available to play at Colorado on Friday. "I've never lost three backs in one week in 25 years before, but, you know what, there's a first time for everything," Helton said. Those injuries leave freshman Kenan Christon in line to start against the Buffaloes. Christian, the 2019 California high school 100-meters champion, had touchdowns runs of 55 and 30 yards against Arizona and finished with 103 yards rushing on eight carries. - AP College Football

Story connected with Jackson for an 8-yard TD pass to cap the scoring with 8 seconds left in the third. The teams scored touchdowns on four of the first five possessions of the game with Chris Reynolds' 47-yard pass to Benny LeMay making it 14-all for the 49ers (2-5, 0-3) with 9 minutes left in the second quarter.
