2020 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD WATCH LIST: Jamale Carothers (Jr.), Navy,...Carothers was one of the best stories in college football in 2019, starting the year on the junior varsity team and not seeing any meaningful stats until Navy's game at Tulsa on Oct. 12. Carothers burst on to the scene that night in Oklahoma, carrying the ball five times for 52 yards and a touchdown and catching a 26-yard halfback pass from CJ Williams.

Carothers went on to start six games at fullback and finished the year as Navy's second-leading rusher with 734 yards on 111 carries and 14 touchdowns, while catching four passes for 105 yards and two touchdowns. He finished the year ranked 16th in the country in rushing touchdowns and 11th in scoring (9.6 points per game). His 6.61 rushing yards per carry stood as the seventh best mark in the country. He was named First Team All-East for his efforts. - Navy Football

Phil Steele Publications announced its 2020 Preseason All-Conference USA Teams this week, and 10 Western Kentucky players were among those listed. The Hilltoppers' 10 total ranks tied for third with Charlotte - behind UAB's 14 and 12 for Southern Miss. All of WKU's honorees appear on the First, Second and Third Team combined, which is tied with the Golden Eagles for most in the league. Just like the Athlon Sports list that was announced last month, defending C-USA Defensive Player of the Year DeAngelo Malone - who was recently named to the 2020 Bednarik Award Watch List - along with punter John Haggerty, offensive lineman Jordan Meredith and tight end Joshua Simon, all made the First Team. - BG Daily News

Western Kentucky senior DeAngelo Malone was included on the 2020 Bednarik Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday. Now in its 26th season, the Chuck Bednarik Award is presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in college football. Malone is one of 19 defensive ends and one of seven from Conference USA out of 90 total players on the initial list. Voters include NCAA head coaches and members of the Maxwell Football Club, as well as sportswriters and sportscasters from across the country. Malone helped anchor the conference's top scoring defense in 2019 and became the first Hilltopper to be voted C-USA Defensive Player of the Year since WKU joined the league prior to the 2014 campaign. He produced 99 total tackles - including 21 for loss - with 11.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hurries and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. - BG Daily News

Conference USA has announced the league's bowl lineup that will span the six-year cycle from 2020-25. The conference is guaranteed seven bowl appearances in each year of the new cycle. "We are very pleased with our future bowl lineup," said C-USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod. "Our teams will continue to have postseason opportunities in outstanding destinations that are very accessible to our schools and their fans. We are also excited to have additional flexibility to create great matchups." As part of the new bowl cycle, C-USA will annually send teams to the Bahamas Bowl against a Mid-American Conference opponent, and to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, against a Sun Belt Conference school. The league has participated in all six Bahamas Bowls and has placed a team in the New Orleans Bowl 14 times in its first 18 years. As previously announced, the league will continue its relationship with the Independence Bowl. C-USA is guaranteed to send a team to the Shreveport, Louisiana-based bowl in 2021 and 2025, while holding a secondary agreement with the bowl in the other years of the cycle. - Charlotte Observer

  05/20/20 - Ty StoreyrSr/2020, Western Kentucky, 6-1, 225 (DS#52 QB) + More +

Former Arkansas quarterback Ty Storey is returning to Northwest Arkansas. Storey, who started nine games for the Razorbacks in 2018 before transferring to Western Kentucky for his senior season, has been named the seventh-grade head football and basketball coach at Grimsley Junior High School in Centerton. Grimsley, the newest school in the Bentonville Public Schools system, is set to open on Aug. 16. "Thankful for the opportunity and excited to get to work!!" Storey tweeted Tuesday evening. A Charleston native, Storey transferred from Arkansas following the 2018 season in which he was 0-9 as a starter. He passed for 1,584 yards, 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. As Western Kentucky's quarterback, Storey returned to Fayetteville on Nov. 9 and led Western Kentucky to a 45-19 win over the Razorbacks in former coach Chad Morris' final game. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Now more than ever, overall body of work by a player will be evaluated more than an agility drill or 40-yard dash. Those five Hilltoppers have taken their own routes to train with similar position groups since the season ended with a 9-4 record and a bowl win on Dec. 30. Season production has helped guys in the past like current NFL Hilltoppers Forrest Lamp, Tyler Higbee, Jack Doyle and Taywan Taylor. Pro days and individual workouts suited George Fant the best. He was a four-year star for the Hilltopper basketball team and barely played at tight end in his fifth-year eligibility. But his athleticism and individual workouts earned him a spot with the Seattle Seahawks where he was at one point the starting left tackle. The Bowling Green native recently signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the New York Jets.

"It may play in our guys' favor," Helton said. "We'll see, but the dynamics have changed. Who knows what happens, whether it hurts or helps them. The NFL does a great job and nothing will come out of this where a guy got missed. Our guys are working hard and trying to put their best foot forward to get their shot." The wide receiver Jackson certainly likes his own tape from 2019. He led the team with 94 receptions for 1,133 yards. His 209 catches rank second all-time at WKU and 2,680 receiving yards are third in school history. "In a situation like this where you're not able to have a pro day in front of scouts and other things they can judge off of, you have to go off what is already out there," Jackson said in a phone interview with the Daily News. "I played a lot of years so I've played a lot of football and a bunch of different games against different opponents, so I feel comfortable with my tape. That's up for them to judge. I'm waiting for my opportunity to perform." - BG Daily News

Freshman Cory Munson kicked a career-long 52-yard field goal with no time left after a rules review to give Western Kentucky a 23-20 victory over Western Michigan in the First Responder Bowl on Monday. The Hilltoppers (9-4) drove 36 yards in 27 seconds before Munson kicked his third field goal in four tries. The game appeared headed to overtime when Ty Storey's desperation heave was knocked down by the Broncos. But the Broncos were hit with a five-yard defensive substitution penalty and Munson was awarded an untimed down after a video review determined that Western Michigan had 12 players on the field as it switched between its field goal unit and regular defense.

Munson had tied the score at 20 on a 31-yarder with 1:36 to play. He also kicked a 26-yarder and missed from 29. Thiago Kapps' 20-yard field goal with 4:58 to play gave Western Michigan (7-6) a 20-17 lead. Kapps' field goal, his second of the game, capped a 62-yard drive that took 5:35 after Western Kentucky had tied the score on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Ty Storey to Lucky Jackson with 10:40 to go. Jackson had 17 catches for 148 yards and was named the game's most valuable player. - AP College Football

Austin Reed broke the NCAA Division II championship game record for yards passing before halftime, throwing for 399 of his 523 yards in West Florida's 48-40 victory over Minnesota State on Saturday in a matchup of teams seeking a first title. Reed had to wait until the second half to break the record for touchdown passes, finishing with six after the redshirt freshman tied the previous mark with five in the first half. Three of the scores went to Quentin Randolph, who ended up 16 yards short of the title game record with 254 yards receiving. Reed broke the previous title-game mark of 361 yards passing on a 48-yard touchdown to Randolph for a 38-21 lead with 18 seconds left in the first half.

West Florida (13-2) had already become the first team to beat three undefeated teams in the same Division II postseason before making Minnesota State (14-1) the fourth. The Argonauts ended defending champ Valdosta State's 25-game winning streak in the second round, Lenoir-Rhyne's 15-game home winning streak in the quarterfinals and 2018 finalist Ferris State's 14-win run at home in the semifinals. West Florida, the first NCAA football team to reach the postseason twice in its first four years of existence, improved to 9-1 in the playoffs. The Argonauts lost to Texas A&M-Commerce in the 2017 championship game. - AP College Football

2019 ALL-OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): WR - DeAngelo Wilson, Austin Peay,...In many other seasons, Wilson's eye-popping numbers (68 catches, 1,246 yards and 12 touchdowns) would have him not just as a first-team lock but on the short list for Offensive Player of the Year. Alas that the best receiving season in program history should come in such a pass-happy time for the league, but don't let that diminish program single-season records in yards and receiving touchdowns. Wilson's All-OVC honor is the first by an Austin Peay receiver since Jared Beard in 2016. - Austin Peay Football
