When he first burst onto the scene last season, Markese Stepp seemed destined to be USC's next bellcow back. Instead, after a year in which he battled multiple injuries and the Trojans run game diminished, the redshirt sophomore is now in search of a new backfield. Stepp officially entered the NCAA transfer portal on Monday, less than two weeks after he led USC in rushing attempts (13) in a Pac-12 title loss to Oregon.

It was a disappointing finish to a disappointing season for Stepp, whose redshirt freshman season ended with an ankle injury that lingered until the start of the 2020 season. That injury slowed his progress to start this shortened campaign, before he also suffered a turf toe injury and a strained pectoral, the latter of which cost him a game. He finished with just 165 yards in 45 carries, nearly three yards per carry fewer than he registered as a redshirt freshman last season. - Los Angeles Times

College football's leading passer in 2020 is coming to The Hill. Western Kentucky announced the signing of quarterback Bailey Zappe, a transfer from Houston Baptist, on Sunday. Zappe joins three other recent Huskies-turned-Hilltoppers in offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Zach Kittley, as well as star wide receivers Jerreth Sterns and Josh Sterns.

In an abridged 2020 season, the success of HBU's Air Raid passing offense made headlines throughout the country. In only four games, the Victoria, Texas, native completed 141 of 215 passes (65.6%) for 1,833 yards, with 15 touchdowns and one interception. At 458.3 yards per game, Zappe's average ranks 83.3 yards above the leading FBS passer (Kyle Trask of Florida - 375 yards per game) in 2020. - BG Daily News

Sunday night, after a 37-19 victory at Charlotte in the regular-season finale, the Western Kentucky football Twitter account said the program was "Winning on AND off the field today!" That's because the Hilltoppers signed Adam Cofield, a graduate transfer running back who helped North Dakota State to the last three FCS championships, and who WKU expects to make an impact on the field next season. "Really, the decision to leave North Dakota was to be able to go and play at a different level and be able to expand my knowledge of the game with other coaches," Cofield said Monday in a phone interview with the Daily News. "Being able to be with (WKU's) coach (Tyson) Helton and coach (Ryan) Aplin almost every day definitely helped my decision on choosing them because they were really helpful in just helping me with the whole process."

The 5-foot-11, 211-pound back totaled 1,542 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns on 300 attempts in four years for the Bison. He also had 109 yards and a touchdown on 19 receptions, with 103 yards and 16 receptions coming in 2019 - his last full season with NDSU. WKU running backs caught a combined 17 passes for 96 yards this season. "I can do it all," Cofield said. "When the coaches were recruiting me, I was able to do every aspect of the game - I can run, catch and I'm an every-down back. It's definitely a plus for me going into a different atmosphere and a different level of play." - BG Daily News

Lowe had a season-high four tackles Sept. 19 against Liberty, and hasn't played since the Oct. 24 win over Chattanooga. He played in 10 games last season with 20 tackles. - BG Daily News

For the second time in as many days, a Western Kentucky quarterback has entered the transfer portal. One day after Davis Shanley entered the transfer portal, Kevaris Thomas has done the same, WKU confirmed to the Daily News on Tuesday. Thomas, a 6-foot-4, 260-pound redshirt sophomore, has appeared in three games for the Hilltoppers this season with two starts. He entered in the second half of a 38-14 loss to Marshall on Oct. 10, completing 9-of-18 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown, while adding 30 yards and a score on seven rushing attempts.

With Tyrrell Pigrome battling turf toe and WKU's offense struggling, Thomas got the start for the following two games at UAB and against Chattanooga. He threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns on 16-of-35 passing against the Blazers, with two interceptions, and had 59 yards on 12-of-17 passing against the Mocs, but was battling a hip pointer and replaced by Pigrome in the second half. In total, Thomas had 369 yards passing, three touchdowns and two interceptions on 37-of-70 passing and 29 yards and one touchdown on 24 rushing attempts this season. He did not play after the Chattanooga game. - BG Daily News

Western Kentucky redshirt junior quarterback Davis Shanley has entered the transfer portal, he announced via Twitter and WKU confirmed to the Daily News on Monday. "Thank you western Kentucky for the past 4 years. I have built so many friendships and appreciate everything they have done for me especially allowing me to earn my degree," Shanley wrote. "However, the time has come for me to move on and start a new chapter in my life. "I have officially entered the transfer portal and will be a graduate transfer."

Shanley has appeared in only one game for the Hilltoppers over the last two seasons, recording a 16-yard rush on Nov. 9, 2019, at Arkansas on an option play. He redshirted his first season at WKU in 2017, and appeared in nine games with four starts the following year. In the Hilltoppers' 3-9 2018 season, Shanley threw for 942 yards on 96-of-141 passing with three touchdowns and two interceptions.   NOV 23 CONFERENCE USA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Even though there was a kick return touchdown by the opposing team in the game, it was the Hilltoppers' punter who made the greatest special teams impact.
