  03/10/23 - Kody EppsrSr/2026, Western Kentucky, 5-11, 187 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Without anything else to do this offseason, sidelined by a shoulder injury, Kody Epps has made it a point to sit in on quarterback meetings. It is not something he has ever done before. The wide receiver used to only attend his mandatory meetings and get out. But without the ability to workout, and a new quarterback to mesh with, Epps has decided to go all-in on the scheme side of things. "I just want to hear that dialect. See what they're thinking, see what's going on in there," Epps said. "I want to be as locked in as possible. I definitely want to be someone you can rely on to understand the offense's ins and outs. I'm looking at what the running backs are doing, the linemen are doing, the quarterback is doing."

Epps was the breakout leader in the receivers room last year before he was injured, leading the team with 459 yards and 39 catches. Now, though, there is a fear that him missing spring practice will hinder his ability to jell with new quarterback Kedon Slovis. A lack of connection could bleed into a rocky 2023. And being fair, there is still that fear. But with Epps sitting with Slovis in the film room, there is at least the hope they will form a relationship without practice. "I mean, he's my quarterback, so of course I want to make sure we have a relationship," Epps said. "We got a bond, but it all comes naturally." - Salt Lake Tribune

  03/08/23 - Kody EppsrSr/2026, Western Kentucky, 5-11, 187 (DS#999 WR) + More +

BYU wide receiver Kody Epps isn't your typical sophomore. Thanks to things like the pandemic and a redshirt year, he is already a veteran in terms of his time as a Cougar since he is in his fourth year. That's one reason why BYU isn't going to rush him back from a shoulder injury, although Epps said with a grin Monday after practice at the indoor practice facility in Provo that if it was up to him he'd be out on the field right now. "My shoulder is doing a lot better than it could have been," Epps said. "It's been a slow process but they've been taking care of me. I've been staying on top of my rehab, nutrition, sleep and all that type of stuff. Those things have been the main emphasis to get my shoulder right." Epps - and many other Cougar players who are recovering from injuries and/or surgeries - aren't just sitting around waiting to heal up.

There are still physical things to be done to be ready to go. "Right now I'm able to do a lot of footwork stuff and work on my legs," Epps said. "I really want to get a lot a lot stronger, a lot heavier with my legs so I can be a lot more explosive and a lot more powerful." Perhaps more important than the conditioning work, however, is for those players to not lose their mental sharpness. "I'm just so locked in like when it comes to meetings and stuff," Epps said. "I just want to be as locked in as possible, and definitely someone that (wide receivers coach Fesi Sitake) can rely on to understand the offense. I look at what the running backs are doing, what the linemen are doing, the quarterbacks reads, everything. I sit in quarterbacks meetings from time to time just to hear that dialogue, see what they're thinking." - Daily Herald

When first-year offensive coordinator Phil Longo met with reporters recently, he was asked what positions the Wisconsin staff was looking to bolster. Coaches are not allowed to talk publicly about unsigned recruits but Longo identified wide receiver as one position needing more bodies. UW on Wednesday secured a commitment from another transfer wide receiver when Quincy Burroughs announced he plans to transfer from Cincinnati.

Burroughs, 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, did not play as a freshman last season. He is the third wide receiver UW has added since last month, including two from the transfer portal. UW last month signed Trech Kekahuna, who had originally committed to Arizona, and on Tuesday secured a commitment from former Cincinnati wide receiver Will Pauling. Pauling caught 12 passes for 122 yards as a redshirt freshman last season. - Journal Sentinel

Austin Reed passed for four touchdowns and a New Orleans Bowl-record 497 yards, leading Western Kentucky to a 44-23 win over South Alabama. on Wednesday night. It was yet another memorable season-ending performance for Reed, who set Division II title-game records in 2019 by passing for 523 yards and six TDs in West Florida's 48-40 victory over Minnesota State. Reed's bowl total gave him 4,744 yards and 40 touchdowns passing this season, which leads the nation in both categories - for now. Reed entered the the game ranked second nationally in yards passing behind Washington's Michael Penix Jr., who has 4,354 yards passing. Penix plays against Texas in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29. Reed's touchdown total puts him three ahead of Ohio State's C.J. Stroud, USC's Caleb Williams and Houston's Clayton Tune, each with 37. Tune and Williams await bowl games, and Stroud could play twice more if Ohio State wins its semifinal match-up with Georgia in the College Football Playoff.

The Hilltoppers also set a New Orleans Bowl record with 522 team yards passing. Receiver Dalvin Smith threw a 25-yard TD pass to Jaylen Hall on a play that started with Reed's backward pass to Smith. South Alabama's Carter Bradley passed for 360 yards and three touchdowns, and was intercepted twice. Much of his production came in the second half with his team down by three or more TDs. Both teams combined for 74 completions, tying an NCAA record for overall completed passes in a bowl game. Two of Reed's scoring strikes went to Malachi Corley, who increased his TD's receiving total to 11 this season. Reed also threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Smith on the game's opening possession and hit tight end Joey Beljan for a 27-yard score on his second series. - Western Kentucky/AP College Football
