09/26/21 - Connor Sampson, rSr/2022, Western Illinois, 6-3, 211 (DS#54 QB) + More +   Connor Sampson threw four touchdown passes and Mason Laramie kicked a 20-yard field goal as time expired to cap a rally from a 28-point deficit and Western Illinois stunned Youngstown State 38-35 in a Missouri Valley Conference opener on Saturday night. Not only did the Leathernecks (1-3) hold the Penguins (1-2) scoreless in the second half, WIU stopped a fourth-and-1 attempt by Youngstown State at the Penguins' 36-yard line with 1:49 remaining. The Leathernecks then drove inside the 10 and called timeout for Laramie's kick. Youngstown State dominated the first half, building a 35-7 lead before a late WIU touchdown made it 35-14 at the break. Jaleel McLaughlin, who finished with 136 yards rushing, scored three touchdowns and quarterback Demeatric Crenshaw added two more in the first half for the Penguins. Crenshaw had 134 rushing yards but just 76 yards passing with an interception. Western Illinois scored 21 points in the third quarter. Sampson, who threw TD passes for both of WIU's first-half touchdowns, added two more in the third quarter, the latter a 7-yard pass to Dennis Houston to tie the score heading into the fourth. In the 62-56 loss, Sampson set a career high in single-game passing yards - going 31-of-46 for 425 yards. It currently ranks as the fifth-highest spot in the program's single-game records. His previous single-game best was 368 yards vs. South Dakota on Nov. 2, 2019. He also threw for a career-high four touchdowns. The senior registered 13 tackles (eight solo), two interceptions, and a forced fumble. One of those interceptions resulted as a pick-six for a 75-yard touchdown. That particular interception return places ninth-best on the all-time single-game list. Michael is the first Leatherneck to return an interception for a touchdown since Quentin Moon did at North Dakota State in 2017 (43 yards). Michael is also the first player to record two interceptions since Eric Carrera ironically did the same against Montana in 2018. 01/24/21 - Jafar Armstrong, rSr/2023, Western Illinois, 6-0, 224 (DS#215 WR) + More +   Illinois football's success snagging transfers in the Bret Bielema era continued Friday afternoon when Notre Dame receiver Jafar Armstrong announced his commitment to the Illini. Armstrong spent the previous four years with the Fighting Irish and held an Illinois offer during his high school recruitment. The 6-foot, 220-pound athlete out of Lee's Summit, Mo., caught just three passes for 38 yards and had a rushing touchdown during Notre Dame's 2020 season. All told, Armstrong hauled in 30 receptions for 294 yards in three seasons at Notre Dame that also saw him rush for 513 yards on 135 carries and nine touchdowns. Per a source, he's joined in the transfer portal at the moment by junior running back Jahmir Smith, who in October left the roster to focus on improving his mental health, and reserve center Colin Grunhard, Armstrong tweeted his news Saturday evening. Armstrong rushed for 22 yards and 17 carries and caught three passes as a running back for 38 yards this season before moving back to wide receiver in late October. Senior guard Will Waddell and senior defensive back Damien Crumitie, both former high school teammates at Leon High School in Tallahassee, posted via their Twitter their intention to play elsewhere for their final year of eligibility. A third Grambling player, backup running back Tiger Gleesin, announced he has entered the portal. Grambling has now lost three of its top NFL prospects with Crumitie and Waddell joining offensive lineman David Moore, who opted out.
