Along with production on the defensive line, Stills is now taking on an advanced leadership role at a time when leaders on college football teams may be as important as ever. Stills is not only being looked for on-the-field direction, but with the coronavirus still spreading - especially on college campuses - every decision that players make in their everyday lives could potentially be detrimental to their teams. Coach Neal Brown has stressed the importance of making smart decisions away from the field and has also said that the players will largely have to police themselves. That's where leaders like Stills come in.

"It's hard being our age and this stuff happening because during college, you want to experience stuff that's outside of football, but it's all about sacrifice," Stills said. "We're getting to play football and our sacrifice has gotten us to this point. "I've really just kind of had to tell my guys to be careful on the weekends. Whenever we have off days tell them to be careful and make the right decisions, because one night isn't worth the whole season getting canceled or an afternoon isn't worth the season getting canceled. I just try to tell my guys to be careful and make the right decisions. I know you're grown and you're going to do whatever you want regardless, but keep in mind that you're not affecting you, you're affecting your whole team if something bad happens." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

West Virginia University's running game really has no way to go but up this season. It would be difficult to go any lower than where it was statistically in 2019. The Mountaineers could, but they'd have little distance to fall. WVU was third worst in the Football Bowl Subdivision in rushing yards per game (73.25) and second worst in yards per carry (2.63). So it is good news for coach Neal Brown when he can point out positives among his running backs, as he was able to in recent practices. West Virginia's leading rusher from last season, Leddie Brown, is back, and he has shown recent examples of why he should be one of, if not the lead ball carrier in 2020, Neal Brown said.

"Leddie Brown ran the ball really hard, and that's been the case really since Saturday," Brown told WVU's official athletic website after Thursday's practice. "I'm kind of excited about him, and the week he's had. I think it was an important week for him, and he's been productive." Leddie Brown finished last season with 367 yards and a touchdown on 107 carries. His best day as a Mountaineer came in WVU's Big 12 opener at Kansas, where he gained 70 yards on 12 carries, more than 5.8 yards per carry. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Nobody is expecting Georgia to have an impact freshman wide receiver like George Pickens again this season. Pickens had more catches with 49 than any Bulldog freshman since A.J. Green in 2008. He was the first freshman to top the Bulldogs in receptions since Terrence Edwards in 1999. Another season-ending knee injury to Dominick Blaylock Wednesday means the Bulldogs will need to tap into the nation's top-ranked recruiting class even more for help from a highly-regarded group of wideouts. It includes three top 15 prospects at the position-including Marcus Rosemy and Jermaine Burton-as well as 4-star early enrollee Justin Robinson and Ladd McConkey, who was added to the haul after Todd Monken was hired as offensive coordinator. "We're still relatively young with a couple of guys we're counting on with George and some of the incoming freshmen and some of the older guys that still have work to do as developmental players that need the reps," Monken said a day before the Blaylock injury. - Athens Daily Banner

Zack Dobson, a former wide receiver at Middle Tennessee State, is transferring to West Virginia. Dobson changed his information on his personal Twitter account, which reflects his commitment to the Mountaineers. In June, Dobson announced on Twitter he was entering the NCAA transfer portal after two seasons at MTSU. The former Fulton standout has two seasons of eligibility remaining but will have to sit out this season, per the NCAA transfer rules, unless he is granted a waiver that would allow him to be eligible immediately. He started four games in 2019 and played in eight, recording 16 receptions for 242 receiving yards and three touchdowns. In two seasons at MTSU, he played in 17 games and finished with 31 receptions for 413 yards, seven receiving touchdowns and one rushing touchdown. - Daily News Journal

Former freshman All-America selection and three-year starting linebacker Tony Fields II is bound for Morgantown. The Arizona transfer announced his verbal commitment to join the Mountaineers Monday evening on his Twitter site. Fields will be reunited with WVU cornerbacks coach and co-defensive coordinator Jahmile Addae. Addae recruited the Las Vegas native to Arizona in 2017. Fields is the second Arizona defensive player to transfer to WVU this offseason. Safety Scottie Young has arrived in Morgantown and is practicing with the Mountaineers. Fields has been an every-game starter for three seasons with the Wildcats. He earned Freshman All-America honors in 2017 from ESPN.com and 247 Sports. He has racked up 287 tackles, 8.5 sacks and a pair of interceptions in 37 career games at Arizona. - WV Metro News

West Virginia University football coach Neal Brown has said he wants to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to upcoming name, image and likeness legislation from the NCAA. He'll continue that quest as the Mountaineers are the first football team to use a new program. WVU announced Thursday that it is part of the pilot program for an NIL data services offering from company INFLCR (pronounced "influencer"). Several NCAA teams have signed on to the pilot program, including teams at North Carolina, Kentucky and Marquette, but WVU is the first football team involved. The data services program is the first component of INFLCR's NIL Suite. Brown has a history with INFLCR. When he was at Troy in 2017, his football team became the company's third client. That relationship moved as Brown moved from Troy to WVU. "Our mission is really the 'why' of our program," Brown said in an interview on the INFLCR website, "and that's to serve and develop what we call total Mountaineers. INFLCR has helped us serve and develop our players. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Neal Brown's never-ending quest to add players in "creative" ways continued Monday afternoon, as West Virginia football secured yet another transfer for the program. Former University of Virginia offensive lineman Ja'Quay Hubbard pledged to the Mountaineers, doing so less than three weeks after he initially announced he was entering the transfer portal. Hubbard is no stranger to WVU recruitniks. Originally from Sharpesville, Pennsylvania, Hubbard was a target for the previous coaching staff in the 2019 recruiting class. He twice came to Morgantown on unofficial visits, but eventually committed to the Cavaliers. When he entered the portal earlier this month, the new staff - led by offensive line coach Matt Moore - reached out and invited him for a virtual visit. That "trip" helped secure his decision, although Hubbard had plenty of reasons for picking WVU. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

As of early Monday afternoon, Minnesota led the results with 41.1% of the vote, followed by Texas at 37.2%. West Virginia was at 21.4%.
