The clock is ticking for Darius Stills. The Mountaineer senior defensive lineman can count on one hand the number of college football games left in his career … and he'd have a couple fingers unused. It's true that the NCAA is not counting the 2020-21 athletic year against the eligibility for any fall or winter sport student-athletes. So Stills could return next season if he wanted, but it seems clear that his plan is to give pro football a shot when the 2020 campaign comes to a close. He almost declared for the NFL draft last year, but ultimately decided to return to WVU for his senior campaign. It's a decision that has paid handsomely for both Stills and the Mountaineers. The recognition Stills has gotten this year has been wide ranging, starting with being named the Big 12 Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and recently being listed as a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award.

The 6-foot-1, 285-pound senior has three and a half sacks and six and a half tackles for loss through WVU's first eight games this season, to go along with 19 total tackles. Those are numbers any nose tackle would be proud of, but they haven't yet reached last year's 12-game stats when he had 47 tackles, seven sacks and 14.5 TFLs. Of course Stills is the focus of every opposing blocking scheme this year, meaning he's often double-teamed. That has put a crimp in his individual stats, but it's helped the WVU defense overall, allowing linebackers like Tony Fields (79 tackles) to run free and make plays. "I'm doing OK, but I still have a lot I can do. They are scheming off me and Dante [Stills] a lot, so it's kind of difficult at times to make plays," noted Stills, referring to his younger brother who starts beside him at defensive tackle. "Other guys are making plays, though, so that's all that matters." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Jarrett Doege threw two touchdown passes and ran for one score, Leddie Brown surpassed 100 rushing yards for the fifth time this season and West Virginia beat TCU 24-6 on Saturday. The Mountaineers (5-3, 4-3 Big 12) used a balanced offensive attack to beat TCU (3-4, 3-4) for the third straight season. The Horned Frogs were held to a pair of field goals, the first time they were held out of the end zone since 2016 against Kansas State. Brown had three rushes of at least 30 yards to pile up 156 yards on the ground, while Doege continued to make good decisions with his arm. The second-year starter, who transferred from Bowling Green last year, completed passes to seven different receivers. - AP College Football

Injured West Virginia kicker Evan Staley said he will miss the rest of the season. Staley said Sunday on Twitter that he will have surgery soon. He didn’t specify what the injury was or when it occurred. Staley made six of nine field-goal attempts and all 19 extra point tries this season. He missed a 51-yard field goal on West Virginia’s first offensive series of Saturday’s 37-10 win over Kansas State, then made a 19 yarder later in the first quarter and was on the field for the ensuing kickoff. Casey Legg later made field goals of 25 and 45 yards. Staley said he is ready to start the recovery process and looks forward to returning to the field.   OCT 19 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Leddie Brown, RB, Jr., West Virginia,...West Virginia's Leddie Brown was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, while Josh Chandler-Semedo picked up Defensive Player of the Week. Freshman defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor collected Newcomer of the Week and junior tailback Pooka Williams Jr. was selected as Special Teams Player of the Week. Brown finished with a career-high 195 yards on 18 carries against Kansas for his third 100-yard rushing performance of the season. He also caught a six-yard touchdown from Jarret Doege in the second quarter for his second receiving TD of the season. His 87-yard run in the third quarter was the longest for a Mountaineer since November 2009. - Big 12 Football

"Leddie has gotten better as his practice habits have improved," WVU head coach Neal Brown said. "He is, if not our best, in the conversation - on Tuesday and Wednesday when it's work days for us, he's working. He has high player loads. He hits top speeds. He's setting up his blocks against our defense or the scout team, every rep matters. And as he's done that, as his approach to practices and approach to taking care of his body has improved...and he's only going to continue to get better. I think he's in the conversation with a lot of the top running backs in our league."

Statistically, it was an outstanding, workmanlike performance. Brown carried 18 times for 195 yards, caught five passes for 36 yards and scored twice, and he did it in just under three quarters, with his long touchdown run marking his last play from scrimmage. Leddie Brown has been there all season for a unit that has had nothing else to hang its hat on consistently. He's now gone over 100 yards rushing in three of the team's four games, with the exception coming in a 93-yard performance against Baylor. He's unofficially fourth on the team in receptions with 12, and his seven total touchdowns are four better than the next-closest skill-position players, receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton and running back Alec Sinkfield, each with three. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Leddie Brown broke open a close game with a long touchdown run in the third quarter and caught one of Jarret Doege's three touchdown passes to lead West Virginia to a 38-17 victory Saturday over a winless Kansas team that was without coach Les Miles. Before a crowd of 10,759 in the first game that West Virginia allowed the general public to attend amid the pandemic, the Mountaineers (3-1, 2-1 Big 12) overcame a bevy of mistakes to beat the Jayhawks for the seventh straight time. With West Virginia clinging to a 17-10 lead late in the third quarter, Brown rumbled 87 yards up the middle untouched, the start of three straight touchdowns for the Mountaineers.

The 210-pound junior compiled 195 yards on 18 carries, sitting out the fourth quarter. Brown also had a 6-yard scoring reception in the second quarter from Doege, who also had TD passes of 33 yards to Bryce Ford-Wheaton and 8 yards to Sam James. Doege completed 26 of 44 passes for 318 yards. Miles tested positive for the coronavirus a week ago and was cleared to return to the Jayhawks on Thursday. But he chose not to travel with the team out of caution. Tight ends coach Joshua Eargle filled in for Miles against the Mountaineers. Despite some bright moments early, the result was the same: The Jayhawks (0-4, 0-3) have now lost 51 straight true road games in the conference. - AP College/West Virginia Football

You don't expect much contribution from true freshmen in the offensive line in their first year, but Frazier is one of those once-in-a-lifetime players who come in able to play and whom you know will only progress while in school. "He made his second start against Baylor, this time at left guard," Coach Neal Brown said. Frazier was forced into starting the opener at center. "He did not practice a ton at guard," Brown said. "He made some mistakes but was really good in the run game. The mistakes were because he did not have a lot of reps." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

He transferred in with strong credentials from Arizona, but you never know how that will translate in a new system and a new league. He's offered a Berlitz course in how to play linebacker as he has been spectacular through three games, leading WVU in tackles with 29, one for a sack, two tackles for a loss, two quarterback hurries, one interception and one pass broken up. After one game, Brown was convinced he had a budding star. "He plays with a lot of energy. He brings a speed element to the defense that we probably haven't had in my two years here," Brown said. "He's still learning what to do but he plays full speed. He loves contact, loves to play and he's only going to continue to get better. He's an NFL prospect. I mean, he's going to play in the NFL." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

Leddie Brown scored a 3-yard touchdown run in the second overtime after West Virginia's defense made a stop, and the Mountaineers outlasted Baylor 27-21 on Saturday. West Virginia (2-1, 1-1 Big 12) squeaked out the win in a game where offensive consistency was rare and mistakes were plentiful. Baylor (1-1, 1-1) surpassed 200 rushing yards a week ago against Kansas but managed 256 yards overall against West Virginia. West Virginia's defense chased down Baylor's Charlie Brewer all day.

They sacked him six times, had 11 tackles for loss and forced two interceptions. Brewer threw three touchdown passes, but his interception in the second overtime proved costly. West Virginia's Tykee Smith made an over-the-shoulder catch on a pass intended for Trestan Ebner along the line in the back of the end zone. The call was upheld upon review. The Mountaineers needed five plays to score on their second-overtime possession with Brown covering the final 12 yards on three rushes. Brown finished with 93 yards, falling short in his bid for three straight 100-yard efforts to start the season. - West Virginia/AP College Football

In his first game in Morgantown after spending three seasons at Arizona, Tony Fields introduced himself to WVU fans in a big way, leading the defense with 10 tackles (four solo). Listed as the backup to Dylan Tonkery at the mike linebacker position, Fields flashed plenty of potential and closing speed in consistently clogging up running lanes and running down pass catchers. That speed and instinct sets Fields apart, and as he continues to settle into the system, Neal Brown envisions even bigger things moving forward at WVU and beyond. "Really active, he plays with a lot of energy and brings a speed element to defense that we probably haven't had in my two years here," Brown said. "He's still learning what to do but he plays full speed. He loves contact, loves to play and is only going to continue to get better. "He's an NFL prospect. He's going to play in the NFL." - Charleston Gazette-Mail

West Virginia suspended 11 players for its season opener Saturday for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Coach Neal Brown announced the suspensions Saturday before the Mountaineers played at home against Eastern Kentucky. The school would not specify what the players did, except to say this is not related to the coronavirus. Among them were slot wide receivers T.J. Simmons and Isaiah Esdale, tight ends T.J. Banks and Mike O'Laughlin, and two starting offensive linemen, center Chase Behrndt and left tackle Junior Uzebu. Also suspended were backup offensive linemen Zach Davis and Tairiq Stewart, backup wide receiver Zack Dobson and long snapper JP Hadley. Freshman cornerback Vincent Okloli was the lone suspended player on defense. - AP College Football
