Caden Leggett, who joined the Texas Tech program as a walk-on and earned a scholarship as a backup wide receiver and special-teams player, announced Sunday he will have his name put into the NCAA transfer portal. Leggett caught five passes for 23 yards over three seasons. The Georgetown product played in 25 games and was a regular on special teams, including a deep man on kickoff returns. He was in the two-deep for part of the 2020 season after injuries thinned the ranks at inside receiver. Leggett was a sophomore in 2020 and will remain so in 2021 with the NCAA not charging players a year of eligibility for the pandemic-disrupted season. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Lubbock police over the weekend arrested a Texas Tech football player after he reportedly admitted to racing his vehicle in South Lubbock. Caden Trey Leggett, 20, was booked Saturday into the Lubbock County Detention Center on a Class B misdemeanor count of racing on a highway. He was released on bond set at $750 a few hours later, according to court records. Texas Tech Athletics officials issued a statement saying they were "aware of an incident involving members of its football program from this past weekend."

At present, Tech officials are gathering facts about the situation and will handle it "in accordance with the Student-Athlete Code of Conduct process," according to the statement. Lubbock police believe Leggett and another player set out to race on a pre-determined route through Lubbock, according to a police report. A Lubbock police patrol officer saw three vehicles speeding northbound about 2:40 a.m. in the 10000 block of Indiana Avenue and began chasing the vehicles. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
