Max Borghi scored on a 2-yard run with 1:30 left in the game as Washington State came back to beat Stanford 34-31 on Saturday in what was possibly the last game for WSU coach Nick Rolovich because of his refusal to get a COVID-19 vaccination. The state of Washington has set a deadline of Monday for all public employees - including the Cougars' coach - to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Rolovich has applied for a religious exemption and his future with the team hangs on the answer.

Rolovich, who is the highest paid state employee at more than $3 million per year, has refused to be vaccinated for unspecified reasons, in defiance of Washington Gov. Jay Inslee's mandate. He is the only unvaccinated coach in the Pac-12. "I'm going to come to work tomorrow and get ready for BYU," Rolovich said after the game. "This is not in my hands." Borghi's winning score was set up by a 41-yard pass reception by Calvin Jackson Jr. Borghi finished with 89 yards rushing and two touchdowns. "It's good to get Max involved," Rolovich said. "I'm proud of him." Quarterback Jayden de Laura threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns for Washington State (4-3, 3-2 Pac-12), which won its third straight game and holds a five-game winning streak against Stanford. "He was really mistake-free," Rolovich said of his sophomore quarterback. - Washington State/AP College Football

Zevi Eckhaus rallied Bryant with a flurry of points in the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs came out on top, clipping Saint Francis (Pa.) 18-17 on Saturday. One week after his potential game-winning Hail Mary pass was thwarted at the goal line, Eckhaus lobbed a soft pass to Daniel Adeboboye in the back corner of the end zone as Bryant rallied with 15 points in the final 3:18. Eckhaus was 20-of-48 passing for 206 yards. Adeboboye gained 70 yards rushing and 47 receiving. Marques DeShields broke a 98-yard touchdown run, Justin Sliwoski found Kathero Summers for another and Saint Francis scored twice in the third quarter to grab a 14-3 lead.

The Red Flash were seemingly pinned at the 2-yard line after a Bryant punt but DeShields, taking a delayed handoff in the end zone, slithered through a seam to the near sideline and raced the rest of the way for the longest run in the FCS this season and longest in Saint Francis program history. Then came the late heroics from Bryant. Eckhaus drove the Bulldogs 99 yards in 14 plays before hitting Psaveon Reeves from the 9, and then running in the two-point conversion to pull Bryant within 14-11 with 3:18 to go. The Red Flash added a 45-yard Alex Schmoke field goal, but Bryant put together a 10-play drive for the win. DeShields rushed for 140 yards on 14 carries. - AP College Football

Zevi Eckhaus threw for 211 yards and a pair of scores and Bryant defeated Marist 34-17 on Saturday. The Bulldogs (2-2) built a 17-0 lead after Daniel Adeboboye and Fabrice Mukendi each scored on 2-yard touchdown runs in the first quarter.   Washington State's Jarrett Guarantano was named Thursday to the watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, presented annually to the top upperclassman quarterback in college football. The grad transfer from Tennessee landed on the same list last season, when he threw for 1,112 yards and six touchdowns against four picks for the Volunteers, adding four rushing scores in seven games. The New Jersey native was a four-year letter winner with the Volunteers, starting 32 games in that span. Guarantano passed for 6,174 yards and 38 touchdowns on a 61.1% completion rate at Tennessee and was one of just three Vols quarterbacks to throw for over 400 yards in a single game. - Spokesman-Review

Travell Harris, a senior wide receiver/kick returner from Florida, was named to the Hornung Award watch list for the third consecutive season, joining 56 other players from across the country. Harris was used in a multitude of ways last season, his first in Nick Rolovich's run-and-shoot offense, and finished fifth in the Pac-12 Conference in all-purpose yards per game with 146.5. He was also seventh in the conference in total receptions (29) and receiving yards per game (85) and was 11th in total touchdowns, with three. During the shortened four-game 2020 season, Harris led the Cougars with seven plays of 20-plus yards - six receiving and one rushing - and enters the 2021 season with 66 career kickoff returns, which is one shy of a school record. - Spokesman-Review

Although media members may be in wait-and-see mode with Washington State's football team as a while, picking the Cougars to finish sixth in Tuesday's preseason poll, most seem to be fairly bullish on Max Borghi and Abraham Lucas having standout seasons that could catapult them even higher in the 2022 NFL Draft. Borghi, WSU's senior running back, and Lucas, a senior right tackle, were both selected to the preseason All-Pac-12 First Team as chosen by the league's media members.

Though Borghi and Lucas were the only Cougars selected to the First or Second Team, a handful of others made all-conference honorable mention, including wide receivers Travell Harris and Renard Bell, left tackle Liam Ryan, linebacker Jahad Woods, defensive lineman Brennan Jackson and cornerback Jaylen Watson. Preseason all-conference ballots were submitted prior to Bell, WSU's sixth-year senior wideout, announcing on social media he'd torn his ACL and would be sidelined for the 2021 football season. It's the second year in a row that both Borghi's and Lucas' names appeared on the preseason First Team, though it wasn't a guarantee either would return to Pullman this fall. - Spokesman-Review

When the shortened 2020 season ended, it appeared Washington State's football team would have a chance to return all four of its starting receivers in 2021. Suddenly, that number is down to just one. Renard Bell, WSU's longest-tenured receiver and one of the Pac-12's top producers in 2020, will sit out this fall due to an ACL injury, he announced Friday afternoon on social media. Bell led the Cougars in receptions last season, reeling in 33 passes against Oregon State, Oregon, USC and Utah. He led the Pac-12 in receptions per game at 8.2 and was third in receiving yards per game at 95.7. Bell tied for the team lead in touchdown catches (2) and ranked second to Travell Harris in total receiving yards with 337. - Spokesman-Review

In the wake of national laws that now allow college athletes to capitalize off name, image and likeness, Washington State's most recognizable football player has joined the ever-growing Cameo movement, and plans to share his earnings. Senior running back Max Borghi, who this week was named to watch lists for the Doak Walker Award and Biletnikoff Award, announced on Twitter Thursday he's partnered with Cameo, a social media application that allows celebrities to send personalized video messages to fans for a fixed price.

Borghi will charge $70 per personalized video, but doesn't intend to keep the money he makes from Cameo. Cameo, which launched in 2016, has become a popular platform for fans wishing to receive personalized video messages from their favorite athletes, musicians, actors, comedians, etc. Messages are often used for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries and weddings, although WSU utilized the app to add flair to its spring game, obtaining customized messages from Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the film "Happy Gilmore," and former NBA star Dikembe Mutombo. - Spokesman-Review
