WR Calvin Jackson Jr. drew motivation from disappointment and came away with an NFL contract. The former standout Washington State receiver had "high hopes" that he'd be picked up as an undrafted free agent shortly after going unselected in the NFL draft last month. "But it didn't work out in my favor," Jackson said by phone Monday. "So, I used that to fuel the fire. Any opportunity I got, I told myself that I was going to make the most of it, and I think I did that."

The New York Jets gave Jackson his chance and extended an invite to try out at their rookie minicamp, staged over the weekend in Florham Park, New Jersey. Feeling determined and underestimated, Jackson excelled at the three-day audition and the Jets asked him to come aboard Monday. "I went there and had a chip on my shoulder," he said a few hours after signing. "Every route I ran, every catch I made, every opportunity I got - I made sure to make the most of it and I think it showed. I think (the Jets' staff) saw it. And it's a blessing for them to see that and give me an opportunity, but the job's not done yet. I still have more to prove." - Spokesman-Review

Quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, who transferred to WSU out of Tennessee ahead of last season, announced Sunday that he'd signed an undrafted free-agent deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Guarantano came out on top in a four-man QB competition at fall camp last year, but he sustained an injury early in WSU's season opener versus Utah State and backed up Jayden de Laura the rest of the year. Guarantano started in place of the injured de Laura in a 24-13 loss at Utah on Sept. 25. In three appearances as a Cougar, he passed 33 of 49 for one touchdown and three interceptions - all against Utah. Guarantano started 32 games across four seasons with the Volunteers, throwing for 6,174 yards and 38 TDs against 17 interceptions on a 61% completion rate. - Spokesman Review

NEC OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR (COACHES): QB Zevi Eckhaus, Bryant,...Eckhaus was forced into action when Bryant's Opening Day starting quarterback suffered a Week 1 injury and the true freshman would soon shine in the spotlight. He showed flashes in his first two collegiate starts, throwing for touchdowns against Sacred Heart and Akron. In a Week 4 road win over Marist, Eckhaus went 22-of-29 passing for 232 yards and two scores to go along with 57 yards on the ground.   Travell Harris rode on the shoulders of the crimson fans that engulfed the field. Jayden de Laura waived a version of Ol' Crimson before spiking the unmistakable flag into the turf field. Even Butch, the Washington State mascot, took his turn crowd surfing on the field at Husky Stadium. After seven straight losses to its rivals, Washington State had a celebration to remember after the most lopsided Cougars' victory in the history of the rivalry matchup against Washington. "It's special. Coug Nation deserves it, this team deserved it, the seniors deserved it," Washington State running back Max Borghi said. "I can't really put words into it yet, it hasn't really sunk in. But holding that Apple Cup trophy is something we've all dreamt about and it was incredible." Borghi rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns, and Washington State handed Washington a 40-13 defeat in the Apple Cup on Friday night.

The Cougars snapped a seven-game losing streak to their rivals, picking up their first win in the series since 2012 and first at Husky Stadium since 2007. And the Cougars (7-5, 6-3 Pac-12) did it in grand, record-setting fashion with a dominant and complete thumping that left those in crimson rushing the field to celebrate while those clad in purple made an early move to the exits. The 27-point margin of victory topped the previous high of 26 points when Washington State won 52-26 in 1973, a game also played in Seattle. "This win, it wasn't just for us," Washington State linebacker Justus Rogers said. "It was for the people that came before us, the teams that came before us that I've been a part of as well." Borghi scored on a 32-yard touchdown run on Washington State's opening possession and set the tone for the night. He added a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter and only the Cougars' inability to finish drives in the first half kept the game from being even more one-sided. De Laura hit 21 of his first 22 pass attempts and finished 27 of 32 for 245 yards. Dean Janikowski kicked four field goals for Washington State as well. - Washington State/AP College Football

Zevi Eckhaus passed for four touchdowns and Bryant defeated Merrimack 58-14 on Saturday in a regular-season finale. The Bulldogs (7-4, 5-2) finished in a two-way tie for second behind Northeast Conference champion Sacred Heart. Eckhaus was 22-of-30 passing for 317 yards and threw two touchdowns to Anthony Frederick who had 131 yards receiving. Fabrice Mukendi and Ishod Finger rushed for two touchdowns apiece. Westin Elliott, who came in as the conference's passing leader at 266 yards per game, matched that average Saturday for the Warriors (5-6, 2-5). The Bulldogs scored 28 points in the second quarter, two via Eckhaus passes, to lead 35-7 at the break. - AP College Football

Max Borghi rushed for a career-high 139 yards and two touchdowns in the last home game of his career, Travell Harris and Calvin Jackson Jr. each had two touchdown receptions, and Washington State became bowl eligible with a 44-18 win over Arizona on Friday night. A season filled with drama at Washington State (6-5, 5-3 Pac-12) surrounding former head coach Nick Rolovich - fired last month for refusing to receive a COVID-19 vaccine - will likely end with a bowl trip for the Cougars. Borghi ran for touchdowns of 26 and 2 yards on a foggy night on the Palouse where the field at times was obscured and snow flurries fell through the air. His previous career-high of 128 yards came in the 2019 season opener against New Mexico State. "That was classic Max Borghi," Washington State interim coach Jake Dickert said. "Our fans will remember Max and obviously he's gonna be a hall of famer here one day, so it was exciting to put a stamp on his career like that." Arizona has allowed 173 yards per game on the ground this season, but the Cougars surpassed that total with ease.

Washington State quarterback Jayden de Laura was 13 of 22 for 259 yards passing. De Laura hit Harris for an 8-yard touchdown in the second quarter and a 30-yarder in the third quarter that gave Washington State a 37-7 lead. De Laura also hit Jackson on a 43-yard TD late in the first half less than a minute after Arizona had scored to pull within 14-7. Jackson added the capper with a 78-yard TD reception from de Laura in the fourth quarter. - Washington State/AP College Football

Zevi Eckhaus threw for 356 yards and two touchdowns and Bryant rebounded from defeat last week to shatter Long Island 52-7 on Saturday. Central Connecticut upset Bryant in convincing fashion 30-15 on Nov. 6. Camden Orth threw a 79-yard scoring pass to Owen Glascoe for a 7-0 Sharks lead and that all but ended any success they'd have. The Bulldogs (6-4, 4-2 Northeast Conference) ultimately scored on eight of 10 drives which included seven touchdowns and a field goal. David Zorrilla caught nine passes for 147 yards and a touchdown for Bryant. Dan Adeboboye ran for 101 yards on 16 carries and scored twice and Fabrice Mukendi ran it in twice for scores. Orth threw for 148 yards and a touchdown for Long Island (2-7, 2-4). LIU beat Bryant in the abbreviated spring season 24-19. - AP College Football

Zevi Eckhaus passed for 175 yards with two touchdowns, ran for another and Bryant defeated Wagner 31-10 on Saturday. Bryant (5-3, 3-1 Northeast Conference) responded with back-to-back scoring drives after a fluke turnover gave Wagner a 10-3 lead, and led 17-10 by halftime. Eckhaus had 109 yards passing in the first half with a 31-yard touchdown rainbow to Anthony Frederick in the end zone. Ishod Finger added a 9-yard touchdown run after missing the first seven games to injury. Late in the third, Eckhaus fired a 6-yard pass to David Zorilla - his first TD catch of the season - crossing the front of the end zone for a 24-10 lead.

Eckhaus scored on a 3-yard run for the capper after an interception by Jayvis Rayside ended a Wagner threat in the end zone. In addition to Rayside's pick, Joe Andreessen made two interceptions, the first Bulldog to do so since Sept. 1, 2018. The Seahawks (0-7, 0-3) scored on a head's-up defensive play when an Eckhaus screen pass bounced off David Adeboboye's hands and Wagner's Luke Jakubauskas picked it up on the bounce and raced 83 yards to score. The play was ruled a fumble. Wagner's Guenson Alexis was 10-of-20 passing for 45 yards. Jaalon Frazier added 81 yards, completing four of 12, but the pair were picked off three times and the Seahawks were held to 53 yards on the ground. - AP College Football
