Tennessee's Jarrett Guarantano could sense the approaching pass rush just as the quarterback released the pass on the play that knocked him out of the game and put his team ahead for good. If nothing else, Guarantano certainly has proved the last month he knows how to take a hit. Guarantano bounced back from a miserable week and threw two touchdown passes as Tennessee withstood the absence of injured starting quarterback Brian Maurer in a 41-21 victory over South Carolina on Saturday. "I was just very happy with these guys," Guarantano said. "I love seeing the smiles on their faces when they win. That's really the most important thing to me right now." Tennessee (3-5, 2/3 SEC) outscored South Carolina 24-0 in the second half to end a three-game skid in this annual series. The Volunteers threw for a season-high 351 yards as Guarantano and redshirt freshman J.T. Shrout shared the quarterback duties with Maurer unavailable after sustaining concussions each of the last two weeks.

Guarantano broke a bone in his left (non-throwing hand) on his go-ahead touchdown pass midway through the third quarter, and he's expected to undergo surgery on Sunday. Guarantano had been roasted around town and on social media after his fourth-and-goal fumble in a 35-13 loss to No. 1 Alabama last week was returned 100 yards for a game-clinching touchdown. He already had endured a difficult season even before that turnover. After making 22 career starts, Guarantano was benched in favor of Maurer earlier this month. "I've been really happy," Guarantano said after the game with tongue firmly in cheek. "Everything's been going pretty smooth." - Tennessee/AP College Football

Washington State running back Max Borghi is the first Cougars running back to have three 100-yard games in a season since Jerome Harrison had eight in 2005. He matched a career high with nine catches last week against Colorado and has four games this year with 100 or more all-purpose yards. - AP College Football

After a few frustrating weeks, Washington State coach Mike Leach was pleased to see the Cougars play with a level of consistency that has been absent. "Consistency and the mental tough ness to stay focused from one play to the next," Leach said. "Everyone wants to get ahead of themselves but all you have is that one play in the present moment and you better focus on that one and I thought we did a better job of keeping track of that tonight." Anthony Gordon passed for 369 yards and four touchdowns and Washington State rolled over Colorado 41-10 on Saturday, snapping the Cougars' three-game losing streak.

Gordon threw a 4-yard TD pass to Max Borghi and a 22-yarder to Dezmon Patmon in the first quarter as the Cougars (4-3, 1/3 Pac-12) jumped to a 14-0 lead, scored touchdowns on their first three drives and cruised to a needed victory. Gordon was 35-of-51 passing and connected with eight different receivers. The WSU defense was excellent after weeks of getting of getting shredded. Colorado was limited to 320 total yards and quarterback Steven Montez was intercepted twice. "I think we are emerging defensively," Leach said. "We simplified some things but we are still kind of coming together there a little bit, honestly. I think the defense has some of its best football ahead of us." Borghi was also outstanding on the ground, rushing for 105 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter that gave the Cougars a 21-3 lead. - Washington State/AP College Football

It shouldn't be that much of a surprise considering Mike Leach's reputation for producing prolific quarterbacks in his system, but Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon is leading the league - and the nation - in many statistical categories. He ranks first nationally in passing yards (2,612) and average yards per game (435.3), and he ranks second in the country with 25 touchdowns. He's thrown for 400 or more yards five times this season.

Gordon has picked up pretty much where Gardner Minshew left off, except the Cougs aren't putting up wins. "It's not like a version of the Air Raid, it's just a real Air Raid. They really have it down to a science and they have a quarterback that can run it. He can run the offense, he knows how it works and he can put a lot of pressure on your defense," Colorado coach Mel Tucker said. The Cougars (3-3, 0-3) host the Buffaloes (3-3, 1-2) on Saturday. - AP College Football

Tennessee QB Jarrett Guarantano was Tennessee's starter for the second half of 2017 and all of 2018, and he was considered one of the Volunteers' top players going into the year. But he struggled with turnovers and lost his starting spot after Tennessee lost three of its first four games. He did perform well in relief last week after Brian Maurer sustained a concussion in a 20-10 victory over Mississippi State. - AP College Football

The Cougars went 11-2 last season with a No. 10 ranking but are .500 at the midway point despite opening the year at No. 23. Washington State continues to lead the nation in passing even after losing Gardner Minshew to the NFL, but the Cougars can't stop anyone. They're 0-3 in Pac-12 play and blew a 32-point lead against UCLA. - AP College Football

Gordon, like his predecessors in Mike Leach's "Air Raid" offense, is putting up dizzying numbers. He's throwing for 435.3 yards per game and is tied with LSU's Joe Burrow for second with 25 touchdown passes. Burrow is second at 359.5 yards per game while completing a nation-best 79.6%. Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa is next at 335.2, and he's thrown 27 TDs against one interception. - AP College Football

Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt isn't saying which of his quarterbacks will earn the start Saturday when the Volunteers host No. 3 Georgia. Pruitt said last week that he was giving equal reps to each of his three scholarship quarterbacks. He offered no update on the quarterback situation Monday. Jarrett Guarantano has started each of Tennessee's first four games, but the fourth-year junior was benched to start the second half of a 34-3 loss to No. 10 Florida on Sept. 14. "We're not going to give Georgia a scouting report of what we're going to do this week," Pruitt said. "We're going to rep the guys we feel like give us the best opportunity to have success."

Pruitt had said throughout the preseason that Guarantano was clearly the best quarterback on Tennessee's roster. Pruitt continued making those comments through the first few weeks of the season. But after Guarantano threw two interceptions and missed a wide-open Dominick Wood-Anderson to thwart a potential huge gain against Florida, Pruitt had true freshman Brian Maurer take over for the first three series of the second half. Guarantano did return later in the game. Pruitt said last week that "there's no secret, we have to get better production at that position, just like we do for all of them." - AP College Football

Jarrett Guarantano threw three touchdown passes and Tennessee rolled to a 45-0 blowout of Football Championship Subdivision program Chattanooga as the Volunteers began digging their way out of their slowest start in over three decades. Tennessee (1-2) is trying to bounce back from its first 0-2 start since 1988, when the Vols dropped their first six games before finishing 5-6. The lopsided victory over Chattanooga (1-2) provides Tennessee a momentum boost before the Vols open Southeastern Conference play next week to begin a grueling monthlong stretch.

In its next four games, Tennessee visits No. 9 Florida, hosts No. 3 Georgia and Mississippi State and visits No. 2 Alabama. The Vols do get a week off between the Florida and Georgia games. Chattanooga coach Rusty Wright spent the last two seasons working as an assistant on Shawn Elliott's staff at Georgia State, which stunned Tennessee 38-30 as a 26-point underdog two weeks ago. But Wright's current team couldn't come close to producing a similar stunner. Tennessee instead forced five turnovers and took the suspense out of this one early. The Vols capitalized on Chattanooga's mistakes to grab a 21-0 lead in the game's first 6 1/2 minutes. - Tennessee Football

Anthony Gordon threw for 440 yards and three touchdowns for his third straight 400-yard game as No. 20 Washington State pulled away in the second half to get a 31-24 win over Houston on Friday night. Gordon threw a 7-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter and had two 39-yard scoring throws, including one in the third quarter that gave Washington State (3-0) the lead for good. It was the first meeting as head coaches for Washington State's Mike Leach and Houston's Dana Holgorsen, who first met almost 30 years ago when Holgorsen played at Iowa Wesleyan, where Leach was an assistant.

The two coached together at both Valdosta State and Texas Tech and have remained close since that time, adding some familiarity to this game between teams meeting for just the fourth time. D'Eriq King had 128 yards passing and a score and added 94 yards rushing and two touchdowns on a night Houston (1-2) led 14-7 at halftime. But Houston struggled to move the ball in the second half, lost two fumbles and didn't get in the end zone after halftime until King's 12-yard run with 2:21 left cut the lead to 31-24. Brandon Arconado had nine receptions for 115 yards and Max Borghi added 61 yards receiving and ran for a touchdown in the third quarter to help Washington State to the victory. - AP College Football
