2020 PRESEASON BEDNARIK AWARD WATCH LIST: LB Jahad Woods, Washington State,...Woods is the first Cougar to be named to the Bednarik Award Watch List since safety Jalen Thompson received the same recognition prior to the 2018 season. Woods, a two-time All-Pac-12 Conference honorable mention pick, produced one of the best seasons in Washington State history as a redshirt-junior last season. The San Diego native recorded 141 tackles, fourth-most in the country and tied for the fifth-most in WSU single-season history, the most by a Cougar since 1991. Woods also tallied a team-high 10 tackles-for-loss, three sacks, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one interception.

Woods, the Pac-12's top returning tackler, recorded 10+ tackle games and finished the season as the Pac-12's best inside linebacker in pass rush productivity and fourth-best inside linebacker at run stop percentage. Woods capped his 2019 season with a WSU Bowl Game and Cheez-It Bowl Game record 20 tackles against Air Force, tied for the seventh-most in WSU single-game history. Woods enters 2020 with 287 career tackles and 25.5 tackles-for-loss in 39 career games. - Washington State Football

In addition to the issues the group encountered on the field, Washington State's defensive secondary took a few sizable hits off the field last season, diminishing in numbers when two players - most notably starting defensive back Daniel Isom - were dismissed from the team for an undisclosed violation of team rules. Under the new leadership of first-year coach Nick Rolovich, Isom has found his way back onto the roster and will return to the Cougars this fall, a school official confirmed to The Spokesman-Review Monday. There had been a trail of hints the last few months suggesting Isom's return to the team, beginning with various social media posts from teammates welcoming the St. Louis native back. On May 7, Isom shared a photo of the nutrition care package that was sent by former offensive tackle Andre Dillard to every current Cougar athlete. - Seattle Times

The coronavirus pandemic has driven the majority of Washington State's student-athletes out of Pullman, and even those who stuck around have been barred from using the training facilities and weight rooms on campus as the school complies with Gov. Jay Inslee's stay-home order. Former Washington State offensive tackle Andre Dillard, now playing for the Philadelphia Eagles after being selected 22nd overall in the 2018 NFL draft, is facing many of the same restrictions as COVID-19 threatens the professional football season, which would normally be holding its rookie minicamp next month.

Recognizing that many of his former college teammates, and other WSU athletes, may not have workout equipment or nutritional resources readily available, Dillard stepped up and spent big on care packages that the school plans on distributing to all Cougar athletes. According to WSU, the "fueling care packages" included strength and conditioning items such as elastic resistance bands and various nutritional items. It's not clear exactly how many individual packages were sent out by WSU or how much Dillard spent on the packages, just that the former Coug did out of good will and wasn't seeking any publicity or attention. Dillard's father, Mitch, a lineman for WSU in the 1980s, said he didn't know about the gesture until speaking to his son on the phone Thursday morning. - Spokesman-Review

Washington State hired Jake Dickert as its defensive coordinator on Tuesday. Dickert is the first major hire for new Washington State coach Nick Rolovich. Dickert spent the past three seasons as a defensive coach at Wyoming, including last season as the defensive coordinator for the Cowboys. "I am so pumped about this hire. I've been following Jake and his coaching career for a long time. We have competed against him the past couple years and his defenses play tough, they play physical and they play as one," Rolovich said. “Jake came highly recommended from a number of coaches around the country and he has been very successful in recruiting and developing players from this area of the country." Under Dickert last season, the Cowboys ranked 11th in the country in scoring defense, giving up 17.8 points per game. Before joining the staff at Wyoming, Dickert made several coaching stops at the FCS and Division II levels including North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Minnesota State-Mankato, Augustana, South Dakota and Southeast Missouri State. - AP College Football

Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon led the North to three touchdowns in the third quarter in a 31-17 victory over the South in the Senior Bowl on Saturday. The Cougars' prolific passer entered the all-star game for senior NFL prospects after halftime and twice took the North downfield. He was sporting the No. 3 jersey in honor of late Washington State quarterback Tyler Hilinski. Gordon, who finished second nationally in passing yards and touchdowns, completed 8 of 12 passes for 69 yards and two short touchdowns. That included a 2-yard touchdown pass to Notre Dame's Chase Claypool for a second straight big third-down completion. An off-balance Gordon then hit Liberty's Antonio Gandy-Golden late in the third for a 5-yard TD. It was set up with an interception by Troy Pride Jr. of Notre Dame.

The game's most highly touted passer, Justin Herbert of Oregon, shined for the South. The likely first-round pick was 9- of 12 for 83 yards and a touchdown, all in the first quarter, and added a 19-yard run. Michigan's Shea Patterson delivered the game's biggest offensive play and passed for 131 yards. He opened the second quarter with a 75-yard touchdown pass on his first play. TCU running back Darius Anderson was wide open on a wheel route and sprinted down the left sideline. Anderson had just 128 yards receiving last season, but had 87 in this one to go with 43 rushing yards. The North's Joshua Kelley of UCLA had a game-high 105 yards on 15 rushes. The game featured two-minute drives to end each quarter. - AP College Football

Washington State's Gordon was offered his No. 18 for the Senior Bowl. Instead, he requested jersey No. 3, a number worn by former Cougars quarterback Tyler Hilinski, who took his own life on Jan. 16, 2018. "The Hilinskis, God bless them, they allowed me to wear it and I'm honored to wear it," Gordon said. Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy said early this week that the family would attend the game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. - AP College Football

Nick Rolovich has left behind the beaches of Oahu for the wheat fields of the Palouse and the chance to see if his pass-happy, high-scoring style can work at Washington State. Rolovich was hired by Washington State on Tuesday, completing a whirlwind week for the Cougars that saw Mike Leach depart for Mississippi State after eight seasons. It didn't take long for the Cougars to settle on Rolovich as Leach's replacement, giving the 40-year-old a chance to lead a Power Five program. "Nick Rolovich is a genuine person, a program builder, an innovator and the exact fit to lead Cougar football," Washington State athletic director Pat Chun said in a statement. "Coach Rolovich is committed to academic achievement and developing every aspect of our student-athletes. He has a vision of taking Cougar football on a path to win championships."

Rolovich agreed to a five-year contract that is expected to pay about $3 million per season. He will be introduced at a news conference on Thursday. Rolovich has been in charge at Hawaii for the past four seasons and led the Rainbow Warriors to the Mountain West Conference West Division title this season. Hawaii went 10-5 overall, losing to Boise State in the MWC title game but rebounding to beat BYU in the Hawaii Bowl. - AP College Football
