A.T. Perry said he likely won't sleep for a while and that's understandable. Perry had three touchdown receptions and his last, an acrobatic 22-yard catch in the left corner of the end zone, lifted No. 19 Wake Forest to a 40-37 overtime victory over Syracuse on Saturday. "I knew I caught it," said Perry, who also scored on pass plays covering 46 and 69 yards. "I just wanted to know if it was in bounds. After I caught it, I closed my eyes. I've looked forward my whole life to making a catch to win a game. I'm shaking. I won't be able to sleep tonight." The triumph for Wake Forest (6-0, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) gave the Demon Deacons their first 6-0 start since 1944.

Perry's winning catch came while he was falling backwards and spinning to the turf. "I'm small and I can twist and torque my body," he said. The win was just another step in the right direction for the Demon Deacons, who are aiming high. "Nothing is done yet. Our goal is to win lots of games and be in a big, final game," said quarterback Sam Hartman, who accounted for four touchdowns. In addition to his three scores to Perry, Hartman ran it in from the 1 for another. He was 19 of 32 for 330 yards passing. "We're proud to get the win, but we have a lot more goals than 6-0," coach Dave Clawson said. The loss was the second straight heartbreaker for Syracuse (3-3, 0-2), which lost to Florida State 33-30 a week ago. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Hank Bachmeier threw for 172 yards and Boise State forced four turnovers in a 26-17 upset victory over No. 10 BYU on Saturday. Cyrus Habibi-Likio ran for a season-high 75 yards and a touchdown, and Andrew Van Buren added a season-high 60 yards and a touchdown to help the Broncos (3-3) snap a two-game losing streak in the series. The Broncos held the Cougars (5-1) to a single touchdown over the final three quarters after blowing second-half leads in losses to UCF and Nevada. "We finally finished the second half," Bachmeier said. "I think we've always been capable of doing it." Jaren Hall threw for a career-high 302 yards and a touchdown for BYU, and Tyler Allgeier ran for 73 yards and a touchdown.

The Cougars outgained Boise State 413-312 in total yards. "I felt like we moved the ball pretty well, except for a couple of drives," Hall said. "We just didn't take care of the ball and did a lot of uncharacteristic things...and put our defense in a tough spot several times. That's pretty much the story of the game for us." Hall looked sharp during the first quarter despite a two-game absence with a rib injury. He completed long passes to open each of BYU's first two drives. Hall punctuated the second drive with a 14-yard strike to Samson Nacua that made it 10-0. Boise State rallied to take a 20-10 halftime, capitalizing on back-to-back BYU fumbles. The Broncos became the first opponent to lead the Cougars at any point this season. - Boise State/AP College Football

Hank Bachmeier threw for two touchdowns, Boise State's defense frustrated Utah State and the Broncos won their 22nd-straight conference opener with a 27-3 win over the Aggies on Saturday. The back-breaker was a 3-yard pass from Bachmeier to Scott Matlock with 5:09 to play. That capped a 15-yard drive after a critical fumble by Utah State quarterback Andrew Peasley. It took the Broncos nine plays and 4 minutes, 23 seconds to cover 15 yards because of penalties.

Utah State (3-1, 1-1 Mountain West Conference), off to its best start since the 1978 team opened 5-0, finally scored on a field goal less than a minute into the fourth quarter. But even then, the Aggies had a first-and-goal on that drive. Boise State (2-2, 1-0) answered that with a field goal and followed with Jackson Cravens' strip sack and Demitri Washington's recovery. Utah State had 217 yards in the first half but trailed 10-0 and finished with 443 yards with little to show for it. The Aggies entered the game third in the nation at 563.3 yards. - Boise State/AP College Football

Hank Bachmeier threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns, and Stefan Cobbs added a special teams touchdown and a 61-yard scoring reception as Boise State defeated UTEP 54-13 Friday night. Boise State (1-1) gave first-year coach Andy Avalos his first win and the program's 20th straight home opening victory, playing in front of a capacity crowd for the first time since 2019. Avalos, who played linebacker at Boise State from 2001-04, relished the victory as well as the opportunity to play in front of a raucous home crowd. "To be able to go out in that stadium and have it packed the way it was—when there's that type of energy in the stadium, that's a home field advantage," Avalos said. UTEP (2-1) appeared primed to put up a fight early despite being 25-point underdogs. But six turnovers along with a defense prone to yield big plays ultimately doomed the Miners. "(Boise State) played a great game and did a lot of really good stuff, but we didn't play well and made way too many turnovers," UTEP coach Dana Dimel said. "Way too many mistakes to win in an environment like this." - Boise State/AP College Football

Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier was named to the 2021 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award Watch List, Thursday. The Golden Arm Award, presented annually to the top upperclassmen quarterback by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, encapsulates all that is positive in college sports. The award acknowledges performance on the field, but it goes beyond completion percentage and touchdown strikes. The award values character, citizenship, integrity and those who honor the game. The Murrieta, Calif., native has completed 62% of his passes in his career and notched both Athlon Preseason All-Mountain West and Phil Steele Preseason All-MW fourth-team honors in 2021. - Idaho Statesman

Wake Forest football coach Dave Clawson announced the team will be without three players -- two of which were returning starters -- for the 2021 season. The Deacons will be without wide receiver Donavon Greene and right tackle Je'Vionte' Nash, as well as reserve linebacker Chase Monroe, due to offseason injuries. "These three young men will play a key role off the field this season as they work towards a speedy and safe recovery," Clawson said in a statement provided by the athletics department.

Greene, a Mount Airy alumnus, started eight games last season and averaged 20.1 yards per catch. He enrolled at the school in 2019, appearing in four games to preserve his redshirt status. Nash started all nine games in 2020 and has 38 career appearances for the Deacons. He's been with the program since the 2016 season, opting to return for the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to student-athletes. - Winston Salem Journal

While much of the country was focused on the third day of the NFL Draft on Saturday, the Boise State football team took some time to celebrate a local hero. Several Boise State players, including quarterback Hank Bachmeier, joined a car parade at Julia Davis Park put on by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to honor 2021 Idaho Child of the Year Jaleel Dodd. Dodd, 9, was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia last July, and COVID-19 made his treatment even more difficult, as only one parent was allowed to be with him during treatment and no other visitors were allowed.

He's a huge fan of the Broncos, and after they met on Saturday, Bachmeier is now Dodd's biggest fan. "It was just an honor to go out there and see him and how tough he is, and it just puts into perspective to be grateful for what you have," Bachmeier told reporters on Sunday. "He's just fighting and it was awesome to see a smile on his face." Bachmeier said he caught a ride to the park with fellow quarterback Cade Fennegan, and the duo presented Dodd with some Boise State gear, including a hat and poster. "I told him I was proud of him and to just keep working hard and fighting," said Bachmeier, adding that Boise State's Brooke Pahukoa played a large role in getting the Broncos involved. "We care about our community as much as they care about us." - Idaho Statesman

Carlos "Boogie" Basham has become the next Wake Forest alumnus to join the NFL. The defensive end was picked by the Buffalo with the 29th pick (61st overall) in the second round of the draft on Friday night. Basham is the highest pick for the Deacons since 2018, when Jessie Bates was selected in the second round by the Cincinnati Bengals. Bates is now considered one of the best safeties in the league. Basham, a Roanoke, Va., native leaves Winston-Salem as one of the best pass rushers in school history. His 20.5 career sacks ranks fourth all-time for the program. Basham became a high-profile prospect after his junior season in 2019, where he registered 11 sacks. In 2020, Basham appeared in seven games. He registered five sacks and 28 total tackles for Wake Forest (4-5). - Winston Salem Journal

A second Michigan football player has made public his plans to transfer. Luiji Vilain, an underutilized and often injured member of the Wolverines' defensive line rotation, has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal, a team spokesman confirmed to MLive on Tuesday. The spokesman, Dave Ablauf, says Vilain enters as a graduate student. That would allow the 6-foot-4, 253-pound Vilain to play immediately in 2021, with two years of eligibility left. Vilain has not commented on the move, but it allows coaches from other schools to openly recruit him. The Ottawa, Ontario, native has been on the Michigan football team since 2017. After taking a redshirt his freshman season, Vilain suffered a season-ending knee injury that left him sidelined in 2018 and limited in 2019, when he appeared in seven games at defensive end but only had seven tackles (one for a loss) and sack to show for it. - Ann Arbor News
