Ten Boise State football student-athletes were unveiled on the Shrine Bowl 1000, the East-West Shrine Bowl's comprehensive list of the top-1000 all-star game eligible players, it was announced Wednesday. Boise State's 10 selections were the most among all institutions in the Mountain West. Of the Broncos recognized, five play on the offensive side of the ball, including quarterback Hank Bachmeier, offensive linemen Cade Beresford and John Ojukwu, wide receiver Stefan Cobbs and running back George Holani.

Defensively, five additional student-athletes earned a spot on the list, including safeties Tyreque Jones and JL Skinner, cornerback Tyric LeBeauf, defensive lineman Scott Matlock and EDGE George Tarlas. Bachmeier registered 3,079 yards passing and 20 touchdowns last season, completing 63 percent of his passes. - Idaho Statesman

Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier has met quite of few of his sports idols during his college career. Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott, who has spoken to the team twice during Bachmeier's career, and Bo Jackson top his list, but he said meeting Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson on Monday ranks right up there. "It was a big honor for all of us quarterbacks to speak to him and be around a true professional," Bachmeier told the Idaho Statesman. "I was pretty star-struck. I took a lot of his words to heart, and the biggest thing I took away was how intentional and deliberate he was in everything he did." Wilson - a nine-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks, who traded him to Denver in March - was in Boise for an event with Alaska Airlines.

Between appearances, he took time to meet with Boise State's quarterbacks and speak to a group of players and coaches. "He was big on what he let himself consume in terms of social media and the external influences that can kind of affect you," Bachmeier said, "and he talked about speaking a championship language to yourself." Bachmeier said one of the most impressive things about Wilson's career is how much he's accomplished despite those who doubted him. The 5-foot-11 All-Pro was the shortest one in a group picture he took with the quarterbacks, especially when compared to 6-foot-6 redshirt freshman Taylen Green. - Idaho Statesman

Scoping SEC QB transfers: Eleven quarterbacks transferred to 10 SEC schools this offseason, with South Carolina's Spencer Rattler the lone guaranteed starter of the entire group. Here are On3.com ratings. No. 7 - Robby Ashford, Auburn (from Oregon). The former two-sport star from Mobile (Ala.) had a nice A-Day showing playing behind an iffy Tigers' offensive line, emerging as a potential X-factor in the battle with incumbent TJ Finley and fellow transfer Zach Calzada. Ashford is the best athlete in the room, and could totally win AU's job since the Tigers lack real explosiveness at the skill positions. How well Ashford continues to improve operating Harsin's offense will go a long way in determining where he sits in the Tigers' pecking order though. - On3.com

Bryan Harsin enters his second season as the Auburn football coach with a vital decision to make at the most critical position on his squad. TJ Finley, Texas A&M transfer Zac Calzada, Oregon transfer Robby Ashford, and freshman Holden Geriner are vying to be the Tigers starting quarter when the season begins in less than four months with a game against Mercer at Jordan-Hare. Finley has the most experience at Auburn and took most of the first-team reps in the media viewing periods and during the first half of the A-Day game. Ashford won the MVP of the spring game and showed elite speed with a nice arm. Calzada didn't get to participate fully since he's recovering from a shoulder injury to his non-throwing arm. - Birmingham News

Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier will be on the field when the Broncos have the first of their 15 spring practices on Friday, but he'll take part in a limited capacity, Boise State coach Andy Avalos said Thursday. Bachmeier is still recovering from offseason knee surgery, but he's ahead of schedule, according to the second-year coach. Bachmeier - who beat out USC transfer Jack Sears to win the starting job last fall - said in December that he played through a damaged meniscus in his right knee last season. He had surgery to repair it on Dec. 29. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound native of Murrieta, California, posted career highs in completions (252), passing yards (3,079) and passing touchdowns (20) last season. He is already ranked in the top 10 all-time at Boise State in some categories, including career passing yards (6,108, No. 7) and career TD passes (35, No. 10). - Idaho Statesman

2021 ACC JIM TATUM AWARD WINNER: Wake Forest senior offensive tackle Zach Tom has been named the recipient of the 2021 Jim Tatum Award, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday. The award is given annually in memory of the late Jim Tatum to the top senior student-athlete among the league's football players. Tatum, a two-time ACC Coach of the Year, coached in the 1950s at both Maryland and North Carolina and believed strongly in the concept of the student-athlete. The owner of a 3.76 career GPA, Tom was named a 2021 ACC Postgraduate Scholarship Recipient after completing his undergraduate degree in Business and Enterprise Management with Cum Laude honors last spring. Tom has been an All-ACC Academic Team member each of the past two seasons while also earning ACC Academic Honor Roll honors during all four years in Winston-Salem. He is currently pursuing his Masters of Business, becoming just the second Wake Forest football student-athlete to enroll in the MBA program.

The 6-5, 295-pound Prairieville, Louisiana, native has been a mainstay on the offensive front for the Atlantic Division champion Demon Deacons, who enter this Saturday's Subway ACC Football Championship Game leading the conference in scoring (42.9 points per game) and ranked third in total yards per contest (483.6). A Campbell Trophy semifinalist, Tom also earned a spot on the preseason watch list for Outland Trophy, which is awarded to the best interior lineman in the country. "Everyone on our staff is extremely proud of how Zach Tom has excelled on and off the field during his career at Wake Forest," said Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson. "His dedication and hard work have allowed him to become one of the best offensive tackles in the country, and he is just the second football student-athlete to enroll in Wake Forest's prestigious M.B.A. program.
