Boise State was looking for a fast start against UNLV, especially coming off a bye week. And, while second-half defense had been the key to the No. 16 Broncos' previous four wins, their first-half defensive work was near perfect Saturday. Hank Bachmeier threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns and Boise State rode a strong defensive effort to a 38-13 win over UNLV. "The whole mindset coming off the bye was how are we going to start fast," said Boise State coach Bryan Harsin, whose team led 17-0 at halftime. "What's our mindset Friday, Saturday night, our guys came ready to play. It was a really solid defensive performance."

Khalil Shaker caught seven passes for 111 yards and a TD, John Hightower had four catches for 105 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown reception that make it 14-0 with 13:38 left until halftime. "They just called the play and I went on the go route," Hightower said. "As I play my part, as they come up, as they call my play. I just do what I can." Shaker's touchdown came on a pass from backup Chase Cord, a 24-yard hookup with 5:31 left in the game. Boise State (5-0, 2-0 Mountain West) is having a good week in its quest for a Group of Five bowl berth. On Friday night, the Broncos' closest competitor for that spot, No. 18 UCF (4-2), lost at Cincinnati 27-24. Bachmeier opened the scoring with 11:33 left in the first quarter, finding Garrett Collingham on the right side for a 2-yard scamper through a tackler. - Boise State/AP College Football

Jamie Newman threw for two touchdowns and Wake Forest relied on its impressive third-down conversions Saturday to beat Boston College 27-24. Newman completed 21 of 33 passes for 243 yards but was picked off once. Cade Carney added a TD run for Wake Forest (5-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), which went 17 of 24 on third-down attempts. Anthony Brown was 20 of 28 for 240 with two TDs and two interceptions. Running back David Bailey threw for a TD and caught one, and AJ Dillon carried 23 times for 159 yards for the Eagles (3-2, 1-1). Clinging to a three-point lead early in the fourth quarter, Newman lofted a 27-yard TD to Scotty Washington, who made a leaping grab over Jason Maitre to make it 27-17.

BC then sliced it to 27-24 when running back David Bailey hit tight end Chris Garrison with a 16-yard scoring toss with just under seven minutes left. But the Demon Deacons converted a couple more third downs before punting the ball back in the closing seconds. Trailing 20-17, BC was lining up for a 43-yard field attempt when it was whistled for a delay of game as Aaron Boumerhi booted it through the uprights. Then, on the next attempt, the Eagles bounced the snap before holder Dennis Grosel threw an incomplete pass deep. The teams were tied 17-all at halftime. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Jamie Newman completed 27 of 35 passes for 351 yards and five touchdowns, and Wake Forest eased past Elon 49-7 on Saturday at BB&T Field. The Demon Deacons (4-0) scored touchdowns on three of their first four drives. They ended any doubt as to the outcome just before halftime when Newman connected with receiver Sage Surratt for a 48-yard touchdown pass, Surratt's second scoring reception of the game, to give the hosts a 28-7 lead.

Newman tied a school record with his fifth touchdown pass, a 31-yard completion to Scotty Washington, to cap Wake Forest's opening drive of the third quarter. His work done, Newman watched the remainder of the game from the bench. Washington finished with nine catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman running back Kenneth Walker added 91 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries. - Wake Forest/AP College Football

Hank Bachmeier threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns, Robert Mahone rushed for a pair of scores in the fourth quarter, and No. 20 Boise State pulled away in the second half for a 30-19 win over Air Force on Friday night. Bachmeier's arm made up for a Broncos' running game that was ineffective until the fourth quarter. He hit CT Thomas on a 36-yard touchdown pass in the first half while getting crunched by a defender, and added a 28-yard TD toss to tight end John Bates late in the third quarter to give the Broncos a 17-13 lead. Mahone added a pair of 10-yard TD runs in the fourth as the Broncos (4-0, 1-0 Mountain West) won their 20th straight conference opener.

Bachmeier completed 19 of 26 passes in another impressive performance by the freshman in just his fourth start. Air Force quarterback Donald Hammond III had an 8-yard touchdown run in the first half and threw a 31-yard TD to Geraud Sanders late in the fourth quarter. Taven Birdow led Air Force (2-1, 0-1) with 67 yards rushing, but the second-best rushing attack in the country was held to 242 yards, more than 100 yards under its season average. Bachmeier also got help from his receivers, who made terrific catches. Thomas, who had a career-high 119 yards receiving, made a diving 29-yard catch to set up Eric Sachse's 40-yard field goal in the first half. John Hightower made a juggling reception surrounded by two defenders on a key third-down in the fourth quarter, and Mahone scored on a 10-yard TD run on the next play to give the Broncos a 23-13 lead. - Boise State/AP College Football

Jamie Newman came up with a pair of big plays on a clock-draining fourth-quarter drive, helping Wake Forest hold off North Carolina's comeback bid for a 24-18 win Friday night. Newman hit Scotty Washington for a 27-yard gain, then had a 4-yard scramble on third down to keep possession to help the Demon Deacons (3-0) take 5 minutes off the clock and add a field goal to a dwindling lead.

UNC (2-1) had a final drive with no timeouts with a chance for a third straight fourth-quarter comeback, but the game ended when Michael Carter didn't get out of bounds in time on a run to set up a final desperation heave from just across midfield. Wake Forest dominated the first half to lead 21-0, only to see freshman quarterback Sam Howell lead the Tar Heels on two fourth-quarter TD drives to get back in it. The win came in an unusual setting: a game between instate Atlantic Coast Conference teams that was designated as a nonconference matchup that didn't count in the league standings. The teams had agreed in 2015 to play this year and in 2021 instead of waiting until 2022 for their next ACC matchup amid the 14-team league's scheduling rotation for teams in opposite divisions. - AP College Football

Boise State moved up to No. 22 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and Amway Coaches Poll. The Broncos are 2-0 on the season with a road win at Florida State (36-31) on Aug. 31 and a home-opening victory over C-USA favorite Marshall (14-7) last Friday. Boise State has been nationally ranked in 18-consecutive seasons, the eight-longest active streak in the nation. Boise State has been ranked for at least one week in either the AP or Coaches Poll every season since 2002. Wyoming and Hawai'i, which are both also 2-0, are also receiving votes in the Amway Coaches Poll. - Mountain West Football

With Wake Forest's running game limited by Rice's defense early in Friday night's game, the Demon Deacons decided to take advantage of their size at wide receiver. Jamie Newman and Scotty Washington made sure the decision worked. Newman was 21 of 27 for 312 yards and three touchdowns, Washington had seven catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns and Wake Forest beat the Rice Owls 41-21. "I think we're pretty good at receiver and protecting well right now," Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. "When teams gang up and play the run, you have to take some shots over top. We've got some big receivers that can go up and get it."

Newman, who started 13 of 14, also rushed for 29 yards. Sage Surratt finished with six catches for 45 yards and a score, and Kenneth Walker III had 125 yards on nine rushes, including a school-record 96-yard touchdown run with 13 minutes left in the fourth quarter, for the Demon Deacons (2-0). "We had a great day throwing the ball today," Washington said. "Jamie, he laid a lot of great balls out for us as a unit." Wake outgained Rice 513 yards to 321. - AP College Football

Hank Bachmeier threw for 282 yards and a touchdown and No. 24 Boise State held its second straight opponent scoreless in the second half to grind out a 14-7 victory over Marshall on Friday night. Boise State won despite the lack of explosive offense shown in its opener last week in a 36-31 victory at Florida State. The Broncos snapped Marshall's streak of 19 victories when the Thundering Herd score first.

The Broncos' running game came to life in the second half after starting running back Robert Mahone left in the first half with an apparent right shoulder injury. George Holani finished with 103 yards on 22 carries, the first running back to eclipse the 100-yard mark against Marshall since Southern Miss's Ito Smith had 150 on Nov. 25, 2017. In his second start as a true freshman, Bachmeier was 22 of 34 with an interception and a rushing touchdown. Brenden Knox rushed for 71 yards on 10 carries to lead the Thundering Herd (1-1). They finished with 172 total yards. - AP College Football
