Hank Bachmeier was 19 of 28 for 181 yards, with one touchdown pass and one interception to help Boise State beat Wyoming 17-9 on Saturday night. The Broncos (5-1, 5-0) will appear in their fourth consecutive Mountain West Conference championship game when they play San Jose State (6-0) on Saturday. With both teams undefeated, the conference will announce the host site and kickoff time on Sunday. Boise State cancelled their regular season matchup against the Spartans due to COVID-19.

It snowed throughout the game and the field was covered with snow as the Boise State defense held the Cowboys (2-4, 2-4) to 146 yards of offense -- their lowest output since 2017. Andrew Van Buren ran 25 times for 79 yards and scored on a touchdown run that made it 17-6 in the final minute of the third quarter. Khalil Shakir had three catches for 48 yards during the same scoring drive and finished with eight catches for 105 yards. 2020 LOU GROZA COLLEGIATE PLACE-KICKER AWARD NATIONAL SEMIFINALIST: Nick Sciba - Wake Forest,...Sciba enters the weekend with 10 consecutive makes on the season, which currently ranks third nationally just trailing Jake Oldroyd (BYU) and Will Reichard (Alabama). Oldroyd and Reichard have both connected on 11 consecutive field goals. This season, Sciba has been named a Lou Groza Star of the Week twice this season for his efforts in wins over Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Against Virginia, he connected on a season-high 4-of-4 field goals, helping Wake Forest to its first conference win of the season. His 3-of-3 performance the next week was equally as crucial in the win over No. 19 Virginia Tech. This included a season-long 46-yard boot in the third quarter. In his career, Sciba owns a .887 field goal percentage (55-of-62), which ranks second in ACC history and is a Wake Forest program record. The last time Boise State sophomore quarterback Hank Bachmeier started back-to-back weeks was in early October 2019, when he was emerging as a young star. He's expected to do that again Saturday - 13 months later - and against the same opponent that derailed his 2019 season: Hawaii. Bachmeier missed the Air Force win and BYU loss this season after testing positive for COVID-19, he told the media Tuesday. He returned last week to help the Broncos (3-1 overall, 3-0 Mountain West) beat Colorado State. "I can't control injuries. I can't control a global pandemic," Bachmeier said. "They're all things that are kind of out of my sphere of control. It stinks, but they're things that I can't control. But I can control how prepared I am."

Bachmeier went 6-0 as the starter last season before he was injured in the regular-season win against Hawaii. He missed the loss to BYU, returned to beat San Jose State and got injured again, then missed the final four regular-season games and the Mountain West title game against Hawaii. He was back in the lineup for the bowl loss to Washington - then didn't get to play for 10 months as the Broncos waited for a belated green light to compete during the pandemic. Nick Andersen's moment in the spotlight continued on Tuesday night when "NBC Nightly News" highlighted his story. Andersen, a walk-on freshman, had 11 tackles and three interceptions in a victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday and earned a scholarship beginning with the spring semester. Clawson said that Andersen doesn't want the spotlight and almost turned down NBC's interview request. "I said, 'Nick, it's not too often we get to go on NBC News, so you might want to do this one," Clawson said. Clawson said that there's more to Andersen's story than just the good game. "The story isn't a walk-on with three interceptions," Clawson said. "The story is a young man that came here prepared when we lost Luke Masterson, Nazir Greer, Zion Keith and Coby Davis, here was a young man that got himself ready to play." - Winston Salem Journal

Nick Andersen, a walk-on freshman defensive back at Wake Forest who starred in Saturday's 23-16 win over Virginia Tech, was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week Award winner. This is the second time a Wake Forest player has earned this weekly honor, and the first time since Jon Abbate in 2005. Andersen, who made his second consecutive start at safety, is the first Wake Forest player with three interceptions in a game since A.J. Greene in 1987. He was also in on 11 tackles. Earlier this week Andersen was named the ACC's rookie of the week, the College Sports Madness national defensive player of the week and the Walter Camp national defensive player of the week. Earlier this week, Miles was in the middle of addressing the Jayhawks' defensive issues in the second halves of recent losses when it prompted him to transition to the subject of Prunty's coverage abilities. When Prunty, a 6-foot-1, 189-pound freshman from Portsmouth, Va., broke up a would-be touchdown pass to Kansas State receiver Malik Knowles this past Saturday it gave him six breakups on the season - currently the most among all FBS freshmen - and continued his streak of breaking up at least one pass in every game of his young career to date. "So guys that are playing for us as young players," Miles said, "really are making great contributions."

Prunty, rated by Rivals as a two-star signee in KU's 2020 recruiting class, is still in search of his first interception as a Jayhawk, but his six passes defended tie him with Alabama's Malachi Moore, North Carolina State's Shyheim Battle and Syracuse's Garrett Williams for the most among Power Five freshmen. Moore was a four-star prospect in the Class of 2020, while both Battle and Williams redshirted in 2019. Louisiana Tech's Cedric Woods, a true freshman like Prunty and Moore, leads FBS freshmen with seven passes defended in six games. As K-State showed when Will Howard threw toward Prunty's man, Knowles, early on a 30-plus yard deep shot, opponents like to test a freshman cornerback. KU senior safety Ricky Thomas said those encounters leave Prunty's teammates impressed. "I feel like he has no ceiling," Thomas said of Prunty. "I feel like he gets better every week. Hank Bachmeier threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns, George Holani rushed for 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Boise State defeated Utah State 42-13 Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Boise State won its home opener for the 11th straight time and hasn’t dropped a conference opener since 1999. Utah State continued its abysmal record against the Broncos, losing for the 17th time in the last 18 matchups. Despite the game taking place in an empty stadium with less atmosphere than a spring game, Boise State brought plenty of intensity on defense and sprinkled in its trademark pizzazz on offense. The Broncos held Utah State to 45 total yards in the first half, keeping Utah State quarterback Jason Shelley under constant duress. Meanwhile, Bachmeier shined in his return after an injury-mired 2019 season. He utilized his full complement of receivers, completing passes to eight different players. Walk-on freshman safety Nick Anderson had three interceptions, Christian Beal-Smith ran for 129 yards and Nick Sciba kicked three field goals to help Wake Forest beat No. 19 Virginia Tech 23-16 on Saturday. Anderson stopped two deep Hokies drives and the third ended their final possession. Beal-Smith set the tone for the Demon Deacons (3-2, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) with a 58-yard run on the game’s first series. He later added runs of 26 and 19 yards. Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman threw only 17 times, completing 12 for 110 yards. But he scrambled 9 yards for the game’s first score. Hendon Hooker threw for 223 yards and ran for another 98 for the Hokies (3-2, 3-2). They had won six of the previous seven games between the schools. New offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau said improving Bachmeier's footwork will help him deliver passes on time, which will lead to fewer collisions. "He was a little all over the map last year," Kiesau told reporters. "How you play the game at quarterback is getting in a rhythm so you don't have to think about some of those fundamentals and just go play the game with your eyes downfield." Bachmeier spent plenty of time this offseason working on his own to make sure each step in his drop matches the timing of the routes his receivers are running. "All your footwork times up with a specific route concept," Bachmeier said. "Am I too slow? Am I too fast? Am I double hitching? We've been working on all those things to get the timing down."

Avoiding a sophomore slump has been on the forefront of Bachmeier's mind, but spring ball was canceled and offseason workouts were limited because of COVID-19, which left him with a little more free time than usual. He spent part of it earning the nickname "Hillbilly Hank." The Murrieta, California, native hadn't explored much of Idaho outside of Boise and he had never ridden a horse before making a trip to teammate Tyler Eiguren's family ranch in Fruitland.
