  10/28/20 - Jarrod HewittrSr/2021, Virginia Tech, 6-1, 290 (DS#34 DT) + More +

Virginia Tech defensive tackle Jarrod Hewitt looked like he didn't agree with the officials on Saturday afternoon when they upheld a targeting call early in the third quarter of a 23-16 loss to Wake Forest. Hewitt lost his temper as strength and conditioning staff member Ryan Shuman was tasked with escorting him to the locker room, but that wasn't easy. The senior defender had to be restrained as he screamed at the officials and threw his helmet. The outburst resulted in an additional 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. "The way it's officiated with targeting is what it is, but it's the other ones that are unforced, it's just been uncharacteristic of us," Fuente said. The targeting call came on a play where Tech's defensive line ganged up to bring Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman down for a sack. Hartman rolled out to his right and was nearly dragged down by Justus Reed. He managed to stay on his feet, but didn't have time to recover and was hit by Hewitt from behind with Rayshard Ashby and Alan Tisdale jumping on the pile.

Hartman was shaken up on the play, and replay showed Hewitt led with the crowd of his helmet. Wake Forest was in field goal range by the time the officials walked off the 30-yards in penalties - kicker Nick Sciba hit a 46-yard field goal to give his team a 20-10 lead on the drive - but Hewitt's teammates came to his defense after the game. "He's a real vocal leader as well as just demonstrating hard work and the Virginia Tech mentality of hard, smart and tough," Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker said. "I feel his pain. I felt his pain when he was ejected and he's a competitor. And if you're not, if you're not sad or upset that you're not able to compete, then something's wrong. So it's 100 percent natural if you're a real competitor that your emotions are going to show." - Roanoke Times

  10/24/20 - Khalil HerbertrSr/2021, Virginia Tech, 5-09, 210 (DS#18 RB) + More +

Kansas graduate transfer Khalil Herbert is averaging an FBS-best 148 yards rushing for Virginia Tech. Herbert had a 291-yard performance in 2017, but had just three 100-yard outings in 35 career games with Kansas. He's already had four with the Hokies and had 357 all-purpose yards – most in FBS this year – at Duke. - AP College Football

  10/23/20 - Dorian StrongrSr/2025, Virginia Tech, 6-1, 185 (DS#22 CB) + More +

Tech freshman cornerback Dorian Strong has also played an unexpectedly key role in the secondary with the Hokies missing at least one scholarship corner in each of their first four games. Strong's first career start came in Week 2 when he was the only scholarship cornerback available. He was back in the starting lineup against Boston College with Jeramine Waller out of the lineup. The Maryland native went under the radar on the recruiting trail with his size - he's listed at 6-foot-0, 174-pounds - scaring most Power 5 teams off. The Hokies had no such reservations after seeing him play at one of their summer camps. Tech thought Strong would have time to develop coming into the season with All-ACC corners Caleb Farley and Jermaine Waller, but Farley opted out and Waller's lingering foot injury limited him throughout the season.

Strong, who has seven tackles (six solo) with a team-high three pass breakups, hasn't played like a typical freshman. "I think Dorian Strong is just a big-time player, and he works really hard at practice every day," Virginia Tech safety Divine Deablo said. "He's going to be big time. I already know. I can see it in his eyes. He comes to work and I think that has the biggest impact on him." Devin Taylor echoed Deablo's thoughts. "The biggest thing I see in him is just the confidence he has in himself," Taylor said. "He really has confidence in himself and like even in practice if he gets a ball caught on him he'll come back the next play and won't let it happen. He really just has a lot of confidence in himself really." - Roanoke Times

Blackshear's modest numbers in the 40-14 win - three carries for 33 yards with a touchdown, one catch for 9 yards - paled in comparison to the ones put by Hooker (275 total yards and four touchdowns) and Khalil Herbert (200-plus all-purpose yards), but the touchdown run was the kind of explosive play he hasn't made yet this season. "He came back (to practice) the day before the N.C. State game and was limited, hurt his hamstring and didn't practice much the next week," Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said after the game. "He's kind of found his footing." The longest play from scrimmage for Blackshear going into Saturday's game was a 14-yard run in the opener. He had four carriers go for 10 or more yards in the first two games, but none last week against North Carolina. He had seven rushes of 20 yards or more in his first two years at Rutgers and five receptions of 25 yards or more.

"He keeps working hard," Herbert said. "That was just really good run by him, I just loved to see that. He made some guys miss, broke a couple tackles, and you seen his speed on the outside." Fuente still envisions Blackshear developing into a dual threat of sorts at running back and receiver. Blackshear had a history of success at Rutgers in the multi-faceted role - as a sophomore he was named honorable mention All-Big Ten with 1,136 all-purpose yards - but during his slow start has only played a limited number of snaps in the slot receiver role. He came into Saturday's game with 31 carries for 120 yards (3.9 yards per carry) and three catches for one yard. Blackshear's teammates believe it's only a matter of time before he's able to consistently put his full skill set on display. - Roanoke Times

  10/17/20 - Grant WellsrSr/2024, Virginia Tech, 6-1, 210 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Grant Wells accounted for three touchdowns, Brenden Knox ran for two scores, and Marshall cruised to a 35-17 win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday night. Wells was 19-of-24 passing for 227 yards and two TDs and his 1-yard scoring run gave the Thundering Herd (4-0) the lead for good at 7-0 with 5:36 left in the first quarter. Knox finished with 32 carries for 125 yards. Knox capped a 12-play, 85-yard drive with a 1-yard TD late in the second quarter and his 7-yard scoring run midway through the third made it 21-3.

Louisiana Tech (3-2) answered when Luke Anthony hit Adrian Hardy for a 12-yard TD less than two minutes later but Wells threw touchdown passes of 46 yards to Artie Henry and 26 yards to Corey Gammage give Marshall a 35-10 lead with 11:03 to play. Hardy led the Bulldogs with nine receptions for 102 yards. The capacity at Louisiana Tech's Joe Aillet Stadium was limited to 25% (or 7,140 available seats, including the allowance of 1,000 students per game) due to concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. All fans and patrons attending the game will be required to wear a face covering in order to comply with the State of Louisiana Mask Mandate. - AP College/Marshall Football

Tech ran for 260 yards against a North Carolina team that allowed 108 rushing yards combined in the first two weeks. "He's becoming a really really good blocker just downfield, sealing edges," Tech running back Khalil Herbert said. "Makes it easy for me to run around. Shout out to the guys in the tight end room. They're doing a really great job." That was on display when Mitchell created the room Herbert, who leads all FBS running backs with 149.7 yards per game, needed on an 8-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Herbert bounced to the outside as Mitchell drove defensive back Ladaeson DeAndre Hollins back 5-yards from the line of scrimmage with an impressive pancake block. It was a play Mitchell might not have been able to make early in his career.

"I'm still learning as I go on about how to block and the right techniques, just being able to block well is something I really wanted to get better at for a long time," Mitchell said. It wasn't a skill he was required to use much at Union High School where he spent most of the time on offense with the ball in his hands. He said it was a "big transition" once he first got to Blacksburg, and it's still a point of emphasis two years later. "It's very important, being both is going to be the next step in my development as a tight end," Mitchell said. "It's something that coach (James) Shibest stressed to us tight end, we got to be able to be both. Before we got out and catch (the ball), we got to be able to block and help the run game. It's very important for me to continue to develop that part of my game." - Roanoke Times

  10/17/20 - Khalil HerbertrSr/2021, Virginia Tech, 5-09, 210 (DS#18 RB) + More +

Former KU running back Khalil Herbert has proven to be a welcome addition for both the offense and special teams at Virginia Tech this year. Herbert, a graduate transfer who left KU four games into the 2019 season, currently leads all FBS players not only in rushing yards per game (149.7), but also all-purpose yardage (246.3 yards per game). Through the Hokies' first three games, Herbert is averaging 10.4 yards per carry on his 14.3 rushing attempts a game and has scored five touchdowns on the ground. Herbert has topped 100 rushing yards in all three VT games in 2020, matching the number of times he did so at KU during his three-plus years with the program. - Lawrence Journal World

The feel-good story of the Duke win, Matheny - a sophomore walk-on forced into action because of all the personnel losses in the secondary - had another big game in the loss to North Carolina. He led the team with 10 tackles playing rover, in place of the suspended Devon Hunter and the unavailable Keonta Jenkins, part of a rejiggered defensive backfield that also didn't have Divine Deablo. Matheny had played just a handful of snaps in his career, in last year's win over Old Dominion, before this season. He got the start against Duke and made seven tackles and his first career interception. - Richmond Times-Dispatch

Khalil Herbert seems to be feeling right at home at Virginia Tech, moving to the top of the national rushing chart with his stellar performance against Duke. Herbert carried 20 times for 208 yards and two touchdowns in the 38-31 win and entered this week averaging 156 per game. Herbert also had 150 kick return yards against Duke. His 358 all-purpose yards were a program record and the highest total in the nation this season. The 5-foot-9, 212-pound Herbert is playing his final season as a graduate transfer. He planned to redshirt at Kansas last season after Pooka Williams took the starting job from him following the second game. Herbert ultimately decided to leave and enrolled at Tech in January. He was productive in his 35 games with the Jayhawks. He ran for 291 yards against West Virginia in 2017 and for 187 against Boston College in 2019. - AP College Football

  10/03/20 - Khalil HerbertrSr/2021, Virginia Tech, 5-09, 210 (DS#18 RB) + More +

Khalil Herbert ran for 208 yards and two touchdowns, including a 60-yard score with 2:20 left, to help shorthanded Virginia Tech hold off Duke for a 38-31 win on Saturday. The Kansas graduate transfer's huge day included an 83-yard kickoff return that set up a short third-quarter scoring drive for the Hokies (2-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). Herbert's other score was a 23-yard sprint around the left side to the end zone for a 31-21 lead with 9:58 left. Braxton Burmeister also scored on two keepers for Virginia Tech, which was down 21 players and two full-time coaches due to a combination of coronavirus and injury issues. The Hokies' defense also came up big by forcing a three-and-out after Burmeister lost a fumble to give Duke a chance for the lead with 4 1/2 minutes left. Herbert took care of the rest, breaking loose around the left side again for the 60-yarder for a 38-28 lead while cracking the 200-yard mark to essentially seal this one. Deon Jackson scored twice on the ground for the Blue Devils (0-4, 0-4), including when he shot up the middle for a 10-yard score that gave Duke a 14-10 lead with 11:27 left in the third. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

  09/30/20 - Brock HoffmanrSr/2022, Virginia Tech, 6-4, 302 (DS#21 C) + More +

Virginia Tech center Brock Hoffman's debut in a Hokies uniform couldn't have gone much better. The offense put up 314 rushing yards on 7.7 yards per carry on the way to a 45-24 win over N.C. State. It was only the third time Tech rushed for more than 300 yards in a conference game since joining the conference in 2004. On Monday, he was named ACC offensive lineman of the week for leading the way up front and keeping talented Wolfpack defensive tackle Alim McNeill, who had just one tackle. It was Hoffman's first game since transferring from Coastal Carolina in 2018 where he started 24 straight games. He was forced to sit out the 2019 season after the NCAA denied his wavier for immediate eligibility. The decision drew national headlines with Hoffman transferring to Tech so he could be closer to his family in Statesville, North Carolina. His mother Stephanie had surgery to remove an acoustic neuroma (a non-cancerous brain tumor) in early 2017 that caused lingering side effects. - Roanoke Times
