  2023 CIAA FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Willie Drew, Virginia State,...The CIAA announced their football all-conference players, and nine Trojans were placed across first, second and rookie teams. Highlighting the awards was Willie Drew winning defensive player of the year and KJ McNeil winning defensive rookie of the year. Drew totaled 22 passes defended with six interceptions which lead all the CIAA, he also totaled 34 tackles and one forced fumble. - Virginia State Football

On the rookie team was McNeil who totaled 39 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack.   2022 CIAA OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE YEAR: Matthew Foster, Virginia State,...Foster, a junior from Ellenwood, GA, led a Virginia State offensive line unit that finished second in the conference in scoring (30.5 points per game) and third in offensive yards per game (416.6.). The Trojans were the only school in the CIAA to gain 2,000 yards through the air and on the ground. As a team, Virginia State generated 226 first downs (second in the league) and converted a league-high 17 fourth downs through 10 games. in the eight CIAA contests, Foster and the Trojans' offensive line allowed just 15 sacks, the second-best mark in the conference. - CIAA Football

  2022 PRESEASON ALL-OHIO VALLEY FOOTBALL NEWCOMER TO WATCH (COACHES): LB K'Vaughn Pope, Tennessee State,...Another name to keep an eye on this season is Ohio State transfer K'Vaughn Pope, a 6-foot-1 225-pound linebacker from Dinwiddie, Virginia. Coming out of high school, Pope was ranked ninth among all inside linebackers, according to 247Sports and Rivals. At OSU, Pope played in 31 career games and was a key contributor on special teams. In 2019, Pope had interceptions in back-to-back games against Maryland and Rutgers. In 2020, Pope had two tackles with one for loss (seven yards) and the other a quarterback hurry. - Tennessee State Football

  Georgia Tech continued to add depth to its secondary with a transfer-portal commitment from former Maryland cornerback Kenny Bennett. A grad transfer, Bennett announced his decision Wednesday, becoming the fifth defensive back to sign or commit to Tech through the portal since the end of the 2021 season. After taking part in spring practice with the Terrapins, Bennett announced his decision to enter the portal April 30, just ahead of the deadline to be able to transfer and play this fall. Bennett, who graduated in the spring semester with a degree in family science, announced scholarship offers from West Virginia and Missouri. Bennett rejoins another former Terrapins player on the roster, linebacker Ayinde Eley, who transferred to Tech as a grad transfer last offseason. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  Romelo Williams accounted for 233 yards and a touchdown and Central Connecticut controlled Bryant in a 30-15 win on Saturday. After Sacred Heart's 4-1 record in the Northeast Conference, Bryant, Central Connecticut, Duquesne and St. Francis (PA) are tied for second at 3-2. Williams threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Tyshaun James with 23 seconds left before halftime for a 13-7 lead and the Blue Devils led the rest of the way. Central Connecticut (3-6) put together scoring drives of 65, 75 and 52 yards in the process of holding the ball for 35 minutes. The defense also produced a pair of touchdowns when Ifeanyi Okorji came up with a 29-yard pick-6 of Zevi Eckhaus to start the scoring. Tre Jones ended the scoring when he recovered Eckhaus' fumble in the end zone following a sack by Kelvin Apari. Bryant's (5-4) lone lead came when Eckhaus threw a 9-yard score to Landon Ruggieri for a 7-6 advantage. Eckhaus finished with a pair of passing scores. - AP College Football
