  08/29/22 - Ronnie Walker Jr.rSr/2024, Virginia, 5-10, 218 (DS#999 RB) + More +

The Virginia football team won't have running back Amaad Foston this season, after he suffered a torn ACL, but the Cavaliers did get another back in the fold Monday. Ronnie Walker, who suffered a leg injury in the spring, returned to practice Monday and is expected to be cleared to play this season, UVa running backs coach Keith Gaither said after the workout. "Just kind of see how he progresses on," said offensive coordinator Des Kitchings. "If he gets to the point where he can help us and not be a liability to him and us, then we're going to use him. We'll see where that goes."

Walker, a 5-foot-10, 218-pounder who transferred to UVa from Indiana before the 2020 season, has been ahead of schedule returning from surgery and was projected to be cleared sometime in September. Despite practicing Monday, Walker isn't likely to play in the team's opener against Richmond, but the fifth-year senior could still be a factor early in the season. "That means he's going to be cleared for the Richmond game. It doesn't mean he's going to play," said Gaither. "But he's going to be cleared, which means we can start getting him prepared for the stretch, especially conference play." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

North Carolina coach Mack Brown told local reporters earlier this month that senior wide receiver Antoine Greene will miss six to 10 weeks with a shoulder injury, which paves the way for Andre Greene to see early playing time alongside star wide receiver Josh Downs. Andre Greene enters UNC after catching 42 passes for 833 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior at St. Christopher's School in Virginia. - The Athletic

  08/20/22 - Cam RossrSr/2026, Virginia, 5-10, 186 (DS#117 WR) + More +

With only 10 days remaining before UConn kicks off the football season at Utah State, coach Jim Mora and the Huskies are moving from fall camp to game preparation. But as the Huskies shift focus, the team is preparing for the season without a significant piece. Mora said Wednesday that redshirt sophomore receiver Cam Ross broke his foot and "it appears that he is going to be out for the season." Ross caught a pass before his left foot was caught in an awkward position during Saturday's scrimmage. A year ago, he broke his right foot in Week 2 against Holy Cross and missed the remainder of the season. "You just feel so bad for the kid, it happened to him last year and he worked so hard to get back," Mora said - CT POst

  08/18/22 - Cam RossrSr/2026, Virginia, 5-10, 186 (DS#117 WR) + More +

Wednesday's UConn football media availability started out with sour news; another tough break for the Huskies. Head coach Jim Mora shared that Cam Ross, a redshirt sophomore who was expected to be a top receiver for the team, broke his foot and will likely miss the 2022 season. Ross' injury came during Saturday's situational scrimmage. He caught a pass, his foot landed in awkward position and he rolled over it. Ross limped off the field Saturday, and sat in the back of the end zone with his left foot in a boot on Wednesday.

Ross broke his right foot after two games last season and was working his way back. "You just feel so bad for the kid," Mora said, "it happened to him last year and he worked so hard to get back. He was looking good, I think he was feeling confident, and it is his other foot. Obviously our prayers are with him and they'll get that thing fixed. Knowing Cam and his mindset, and his toughness and determination and character, he'll just put the work in and he'll come back and give it another go. So really tough deal for for him and certainly a blow for the team." Mora noted that Ross had developed into a strong leader for the team, and believes he will have a positive impact whether he plays or not. - Hartford Courant

  08/12/22 - Chandler MorrisrSr/2026, Virginia, 6-0, 192 (DS#32 QB) + More +

Through the first seven practices of fall camp, TCU has stuck to its process of rotating quarterbacks with the first-team offense everyday. That changed Wednesday when Chandler Morris took snaps with the first-team offense in back-to-back days. Morris has also been the primary first-team quarterback in the installation part of practice that occurs before warmups. Head coach Sonny Dykes said he hoped to see some separation this week between Morris and senior quarterback Max Duggan. The decision to let Morris take all of the first-team reps in the open media portion seems like a significant development as the Horned Frogs get deeper into fall camp.

Morris capped the first-team series with a nice completion to tight end Geor'Quarius Spivey near the endzone. Dykes downplayed the decision to let Morris lead the first-team offense in consecutive days. "I don't think so," Dykes said when asked if it was an indication he was close to making a decision. "I wasn't even aware, I think it's just we're rolling through the stuff and getting guys reps. I think we'll have to start to narrow some stuff down pretty quickly. I don't think that's any indication of anything." - Fort Worth Star

  08/06/22 - Aaron FaumuirSr/2024, Virginia, 6-1, 293 (DS#999 DT) + More +

"A guy I'm extremely proud of is Aaron Faumui," Virginia coach Tony Elliott said. "He's a guy I challenged right out of the gate, because I know he's an alpha dog. Right? And I needed to challenge him." On Wednesday following the Cavaliers' first practice of training camp, the senior defensive lineman said he's never felt a responsibility on the field and within the locker room like the one he holds now. "Oh man," Faumui said. "Me and Coach Elliott had a lot of one-on-one talks, but most of it was him telling me I could take the role of being a leader, do right and not just on the field, but do right in class, get the boys together and all of that. So, he challenged me this year and I feel like I've been doing good." The 6-foot-1, 282-pound native of Hawaii hasn't had to lead previously for the Cavaliers, but is now a trusted veteran on their defensive line. He's the only senior in the position group to have spent his entire career with the Hoos. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  08/05/22 - Lavel Davis Jr.Jr/2024, Virginia, 6-6, 219 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Wide receiver Lavel Davis Jr. already had one breakout campaign as a freshman in 2020, but is in need of another after missing all of last season with an ACL injury. The 6-foot-7, 224-pounder averaged 25.8 yards per catch two years ago and is a big-play threat. The next few weeks will be important for him as he tries to find his place in a position group featuring Wicks, Keytaon Thompson and Billy Kemp. "Lavel seems like he's in a better place mentally, and physically, he looks better," than the spring, Kitchings said, "… so he's about a year and a half removed [from the injury], so he's moving around better and has got little more confidence in it. We've got these 30 practices and hopefully he'll be better going into Richmond than he is right now." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  08/05/22 - Mike HollinsrSr/2024, Virginia, 5-09, 204 (DS#999 RB) + More +

With Elliott at the helm and new offensive coordinator Des Kitchings in place, the Cavaliers are seeking to better their balance on offense, which means a likely increased commitment to the run game is coming. They have better depth than they did this past spring, so UVa could potentially deploy a rotation at the position. But there's also the thought that one rusher could emerge as a standout, and according to running backs coach Keith Gaither, junior Mike Hollins possesses the skill set.

"I think Mike could be an every-down back," Gaither said. "It just depends if he continues to take the next step in his game. He's a good back now, but we need him to take his game from good to great, but the only way to do it is great practice habits. He hasn't learned that yet. He will, but he has the ability to be the every-down back if he buys in and truly immerses himself in this offense and in every aspect of becoming the best player he can be." Hollins, a Baton Rouge, La. native, averaged 4.3 yards per carry and scored two rushing touchdowns a season ago in a limited role. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  08/03/22 - Ronnie Walker Jr.rSr/2024, Virginia, 5-10, 218 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Virginia's group of running backs is deeper than it was during the spring, and the Cavaliers could get another boost sooner than they expected. "Ronnie Walker [Jr.] looks good," UVa coach Tony Elliott said of his fifth-year running back who was putting together an excellent set of practices in March before suffering a leg injury. "He's ahead of schedule," running backs coach Keith Gaither said.

According to Gaither, Walker Jr. was slated for an October return, but is on track now for late September. Last season, Walker Jr. carried the ball five times for 32 yards and two scores. It was his second year with the Cavaliers after transferring from Indiana, where he showed promise as a freshman in 2018 and rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns. "He'll still be down for fall camp," Elliott said. "He's not quite where he needs to be yet from a change-of-direction standpoint, but looks good straight ahead." - Charlottesville Daily Progress
