  12/09/20 - Charles SnowdenSr/2021, Virginia, 6-6, 243 (DS#16 OLB) + More +

UVa linebacker Charles Snowden served as a leader all season. The NFL prospect was arguably the Cavaliers' best defensive player when he suffered a season-ending injury against Abilene Christian. While Snowden couldn't take the field for Senior Day, that didn't stop the Wahoos from honoring their captain. Simpson decided to wear No. 11 on Saturday to honor the injured linebacker and delivered a dazzling 73-yard kickoff return while wearing the number. "I asked Charles if I could play for him, and he said he loved the idea and then I asked Coach Mendenhall and he approved of it, so I'm thankful for both of them," Simpson said.

After the victory, Snowden broke the rock to celebrate the win. "I didn't know how to pay tribute to him and thank him any more than allowing him to do that in front of his peers," Mendenhall said. Mendenhall acknowledged Armstrong's elite performance at quarterback, but he felt the need to give Snowden the chance to break the rock after the team's Senior Day win. "I can't thank Charles enough for his leadership, for his example, for his trust in us, and it just seemed appropriate to give him, as a defensive captain, the last chance in this stadium to do that in front of his peers," Mendenhall said. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Charles Snowden, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury against Abilene Christian, was named a 2020 Butkus Award semifinalist. The award goes to the best linebacker in college football, and Snowden is one of 16 semifinalists. Before suffering his injury, Snowden tallied 44 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and six sacks. After a slow start to the season, he caught fire in October. Snowden posted a four-sack game against North Carolina in one of the better individual showings of any linebacker this fall. The talented linebacker isn't sure if he'll declare for the NFL Draft in the spring or take advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to return for one final season with the Cavaliers. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Virginia linebacker Charles Snowden will miss the rest of the season with a broken right ankle. Snowden's father shared the news on social media Saturday night, and UVa head coach Bronco Mendenhall shared Monday that Snowden underwent surgery on the injury, knocking him out for the year. The recovery is expected to take about six months. Snowden could return next season for a final year with the Wahoos due to NCAA eligibility relief, but he may instead decide to turn pro and prepare for an NFL career. He'll make that decision in coming weeks and months. "Charles' influence on our program has been breathtaking in terms of maturity and growth, and in a lot of ways his own maturity and growth has matched that of the program," Mendenhall said. "He came in as tall and thin and a basketball player, and he's blossomed into a future NFL player with amazing leadership skills and a captain of our team in a four-year period."

Snowden suffered the injury of the first quarter of Saturday's victory over Abilene Christian. He missed the rest of the game, returning to the sideline for the second half wearing a cast and using crutches. His loss removes an on-field leader and NFL-caliber linebacker. Prior to the Abilene Christian contest, Snowden recorded an impressive 21 tackles, nine tackles for loss and six sacks in Virginia's previous three games. "Charles, obviously, he's our leader," senior cornerback Nick Grant said. "He's connected with everybody on the team. I'd venture to say anybody on the team would say Charles is their best friend or one of their very best friends." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

D'Angelo Amos, Charles Snowden and Nusi Malani all left the win with injuries. Snowden's looked the most serious, as he appeared to injure his right ankle in the first quarter. He came onto the field in the second half, sitting on the sideline with crutches and what appeared to be a cast on his right lower leg. Defensive lineman Jowon Briggs entered the transfer portal earlier this week, leaving the defensive line especially thin with Richard Burney out for the season with health issues. Malani adds important depth along the line when healthy. Safeties Joey Blount and Brenton Nelson both missed Saturday's win as they attempt to recover from injuries plaguing them for most of the fall season. Amos fills in well for Blount, and he's a valued defensive back contributor. "It's the highest level of concern," Mendenhall said. "We're thin already, and that added to it. It was really unfortunate." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

In addition to Briggs' departure, offensive lineman Dillon Reinkensmeyer suffered a (knee) injury against Louisville. Mendenhall shared Tuesday night on his radio show that Reinkensmeyer will miss the rest of the season. Mendenhall called it a "challenge" to see Reinkensmeyer lying on the field after suffering the injury against the Cardinals. It's a big loss for the Cavaliers. Reinkensmeyer was among the team's most experienced players. The senior started double-digit games in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He was one of the more reliable offensive linemen on this year's squad. Offensive coordinator Robert Anae said Joe Bissinger, a redshirt sophomore from Texas, is expected to slide into the starting left guard spot. He'll be flanked by Ryan Nelson at left tackle and Olusegun Oluwatimi at center. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  11/07/20 - Richard BurneyrSr/2022, Virginia, 6-4, 280 (DS#999 DE) + More +

Richard Burney is a staple of the Virginia football program. The defensive lineman played games for the Wahoos in 2015, before Bronco Mendenhall even coached the Cavaliers. He saw UVa go 2-10 in 2016, missed much of 2018 due to blood clots in his lungs and played in the Orange Bowl a season ago after returning from his medical scare. Unfortunately for the sixth-year senior, his 2020 season is over. Mendenhall announced the news Tuesday. "Richard is done for the season with a health injury," Mendenhall said. "Our team has been saddened by that. He was elected to be the player that chose his jersey first, team captain, got an extra year of eligibility granted, has overcome so, so much adversity."

As Mendenhall mentioned, Burney is beloved by teammates. Fighting through his health issues to play in 2019 showcased his love of football. His performance - he's a key contributor on the defensive line - only makes him more respected by his peers. Teammates wanted him to select his jersey number first this fall, an honor bestowed only on UVa's most well-respected players. Through five games this fall he made his presence felt. Teammates praised Burney's increased leadership, and he recorded a sack against both Duke and Clemson in the team's opening two games. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  11/06/20 - Charles SnowdenSr/2021, Virginia, 6-6, 243 (DS#16 OLB) + More +

Charles Snowden put together one of the most dominant individual performances of any ACC player this weekend. The linebacker finished with 10 tackles, four sacks and a forced fumble in the UVa football team's 44-41 upset victory over North Carolina on Saturday. The stellar showing earned Snowden ACC Linebacker of the Week honors. "I had gotten off to a slow start this year and now to finally be producing and making plays, it feels great," Snowden said after the game. "Sacks always are a great thing." On the season, Snowden's sack tally sits at five. All five of the sacks have come in the past two games. After recording 22 tackles and one tackle for loss in UVa's first four games this season, Snowden posted 18 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss and five sacks in the team's previous two contests. He's stepped up, playing some of the best football of his career in the past two games. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  11/04/20 - Keytaon ThompsonrSr/2023, Virginia, 6-4, 218 (DS#47 WR) + More +

Virginia needed an offensive explosion Saturday to keep up with Sam Howell and North Carolina's high-powered attack. A depleted secondary left UVa in a tough position, but the Cavaliers won a shootout against Howell and the Tar Heels. Bronco Mendenhall's group fought extremely hard, gutting out a 44-41 victory to vanquish its four-game losing streak. It was a gritty performance from a team desperate for a victory. "It's just more fun," Mendenhall said of winning. "Let's just face it, it's just more fun. I like to see our players when they work so hard have fun, and I love to see them smile, and I love to see them carry themselves in a way that they're proud of the outcome. There have been so many really cool plays that I can celebrate with them in team meetings, but it's not the same when the world doesn't see them."

Transfers made plays all over the field for Virginia in its upset over the Tar Heels. Offensively, Keytaon Thompson carried the ball 10 times for 43 yards and a touchdown. He also converted the critical fourth-and-short on a fake punt late in the contest to clinch UVa's win. "He's becoming one of the cultural examples that we can present when a player comes into our program," Mendenhall said. Thompson did a little bit of everything Saturday. He lined up at wide receiver, running back and quarterback and even on special teams. He motioned under center at times, creating a surprise quarterback sneak setup. UVa used him creatively, and Thompson is clearly embracing the role. "When you list the position, it'd be smart just to put football underneath," Mendenhall said. "He might be setting a record for the most different positions played in a game each and every week. We're so thankful he's here because we need him." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

UVa wants more production from its front seven. The three defensive linemen and four linebackers failed to record a sack against N.C. State, and Mendenhall and company expect better from the group moving forward. "That's one of our biggest things is creating havoc and having zero sacks, obviously the pass rush has to get better," linebacker Zane Zandier said. Charles Snowden and Noah Taylor are two of the most talented players on UVa's defense, and the Wahoos hope the outside linebackers show improvement in future games. They've been steady in Mendenhall's estimation, but not nearly as dynamic or impactful as they can be when playing at their best. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Amos struggled at times to bring down N.C. State players, allowing them to pull him for extra yards. Overall, though, he led the Wahoos with 10 tackles after stepping into a starting role with Joey Blount injured and out. The FCS transfer has shown he belongs at the Power 5 level in three games with the Wahoos. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  10/09/20 - Ronnie Walker Jr.rSr/2024, Virginia, 5-10, 218 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Indiana transfer running back Ronnie Walker Jr. has yet to hear back from the NCAA on the second part of his appeal process to earn a waiver for immediate eligibility. Mendenhall believes the Virginia native, who said he joined UVa in part to be closer to his mother, deserves the waiver. Virginia's head coach remained calm, but shared his frustrations Monday with the lack of guidance from the NCAA on the situation. "It seems like our urgency is more than maybe that of who we're working with," Mendenhall said. Even without the running back, UVa's offense has performed well through two games. The Cavaliers are averaging 167.5 yards per game on the ground, up about 45 yards from last year's season average. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
