Diego Pavia threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score to lead No. 18 Vanderbilt over Utah State 55-35 on Saturday. Pavia completed 26 of 34 passes for 321 yards and rushed for 79 yards. He became the second Vanderbilt quarterback since 1996 to collect six-plus touchdowns in a game and tied the program's single-game passing touchdown record alongside Johnny McCrary (2014), Jay Cutler (2005) and Bill Wade (1950). He's got the Commodores off to a 5-0 start for the first time since 2008.

Junior Sherrill had 91 yards receiving and caught three of Pavia's touchdown throws. It was the first time Sherrill has scored more than one touchdown in a game. Eli Stowers and Richie Hoskins also had receiving touchdowns and Makhilyn Young scored a rushing touchdown. Brock Taylor made two field goals. Vanderbilt's defense pressured Utah State quarterback Bryson Barnes throughout the game, sacking him three times and forcing seven quarterback hurries. The Commodores limited the Aggies (3-2) to just 15 yards of total offense in the third quarter. Utah State kept pace with Vanderbilt in the first half, finding the end zone three times and holding the lead twice. - Vanderbilt/AP College Football

  09/17/25 - Diego PaviarSr/2026, Vanderbilt, 6-0, 207 (DS#13 QB) + More +

The NCAA was back in court Tuesday fighting for the future of its eligibility rules through the case of Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, who is playing his fourth Division I season under a preliminary injunction. Attorney Rakesh Kilaru argued in court before a three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. District Court of Appeals that the NCAA believes its rules determining athlete eligibility do not violate the Sherman Act or other antitrust laws. Kilaru also said the association intends to enforce its rules. “I would venture we’ll be back in court in weeks or months,” Kilaru said. Any ruling by the appeals court won’t affect Pavia’s status this season. The NCAA granted a waiver after the injunction granting eligibility through the 2025-26 academic year for junior college athletes who would have exhausted eligibility during the 2024-25 academic year. A federal judge agreed last December that Pavia had a strong likelihood of success at trial against the NCAA rule limiting junior college players’ eligibility as a restraint of trade under the Sherman Act.

Pavia started playing at New Mexico Military Institute in 2020 (the NCAA did not count that season toward eligibility because of the pandemic.) He led the junior college to the 2021 national championship, then played at New Mexico State in 2022 and 2023 before transferring to Vanderbilt for the 2024 season. This is his fourth Division I season. Downton told judges the issue is that the NCAA’s rules are commercial in nature by limiting the labor market. The NCAA starts an athlete’s eligibility clock by counting even years played outside the association’s membership at junior colleges. After the hearing, Downton said they are hoping for a ruling on the case’s merits even as Pavia has NFL plans in 2026. Pavia’s lawsuit includes the possibility of a fifth year of eligibility within five consecutive years targeting the NCAA’s Redshirt and Five-Year rules — a season which Downton says his client isn’t interested in. - AP College Football

Diego Pavia completed 18 of 25 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns, Jamezell Lassiter ran for a 44-yard score and Vanderbilt hammered No. 11 South Carolina 31-7 on the road Saturday to snap a 16-game losing streak to the Gamecocks. The Commodores (3-0, 1-0 SEC) hadn't beat South Carolina since 2008, but dominated every facet of the game and forced four turnovers for their first 3-0 start since 2017. South Carolina quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate LaNorris Sellers was knocked out of the game in the second quarter after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from from Vanderbilt linebacker Langston Patterson, who was ejected for targeting.

Sellers did not return, and finished 6 of 7 passing for 94 yards with one costly interception in the red zone with the score tied at 7. He was replaced by Luke Doty, who was largely ineffective failing to lead a scoring drive. The Commodores dominated the line of scrimmage and held nearly a 12-minute edge in time of possession. Pavia looked sharp from the start, leading Vanderbilt on a nine-play, 73-yard drive to open the game, capped with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Sedrick Alexander that set the tone. Pavia later tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Junior Sherrill in the second quarter giving the Commodores a 14-7 lead at the break. - Vanderbilt/AP College Football

Diego Pavia threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns, each tying his personal best while at Vanderbilt, and the Commodores beat Charleston Southern 45-3 on Saturday night in a season opener for both teams. Pavia matched his high at Vanderbilt for passing yards, set last season in a 24-14 win over Ball State. His three touchdowns were the most he's throw at Vanderbilt since a 35-27 victory over Georgia Tech in the Birmingham Bowl last December.

Pavia was 20-of-25 passing without an interception for Vanderbilt. Tre Richardson had five catches for 74 yards. Blaze Berlowitz came on in relief of Pavia to start the fourth quarter. Both are New Mexico State transfers. Vanderbilt dominated on both sides of the ball, accumulating 481 yards of offense to Charleston Southern's 133. It was the fewest total yards allowed by the defense since a 55-0 win over Alcorn State on Sept. 7, 2024. - Vanderbilt/AP College Football

Diego Pavia scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in overtime as Vanderbilt upset Virginia Tech 34-27 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams with the Commodores rallying after blowing a 17-point lead. The graduate transfer from New Mexico State and the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year needed four plays to put the Commodores ahead in overtime. He finished rushing for 104 yards and threw for 190 yards. Virginia Tech tried switching up quarterbacks in its try in overtime.

Collin Schlee came in on a sweltering day when Kyron Drones threw for 322 yards and two touchdowns. Drones came in for a run and picked up 2 yards. Then Schlee was sacked on third down. His throw to Da'Quan Felton went out of the back of the end zone, starting a big celebration by Vanderbilt. Pavia nearly won the game in regulation. After Virginia Tech took its only lead at 27-20 with 4:12 left, he capped a 70-yard drive with an 8-yard TD pass to Sedrick Alexander with 1:51 left. He set up Brock Taylor for the potential game-winning 43-yard field goal that missed wide right, sending the game into overtime. He helped Vanderbilt stun the Hokies, who not only came in favored by 13 1/2 points looking to build on the momentum from winning the Military Bowl last December to go 7-6. - AP College Football

  01/30/23 - Carson CasteelrSr/2026, Vanderbilt, 6-2, 222 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

Vanderbilt football announced Tuesday that three transfers had signed and would join the team for spring practice. In addition to Stanford edge defender Aeneas DiCosmo, who announced his commitment in December, the Commodores also landed Stanford defensive lineman Jacob Katona and Michigan State linebacker Carson Casteel. The three will join Vanderbilt for spring practice along with three early-enrolling freshmen: running back Sedrick Alexander and linebackers Ethan Crisp and Jailen Ruth.

Katona, a 6-foot-4, 272-pounder, spent two seasons with the Cardinal but did not appear in a game. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, he was not rated as a recruit out of high school. Casteel, 6-2 and 222 pounds from Florence, Alabama, redshirted his first season with the Spartans and appeared in eight games on special teams in 2022. He did not record a statistic. - Tennessean

Diego Pavia threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns, and New Mexico State held off a late rally by Bowling Green to win the Quick Lane Bowl 24-19 on Monday. The Aggies (7-6) were up 24-7 late in the third quarter, but the Falcons closed the gap in the fourth quarter to make it 24-19 after a field goal, a safety off of a blocked punt and Camden Orth's 19-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Broden with 6:27 left. From there, New Mexico State kept control of the ball for the rest of the game.

Bowling Green (6-7) lost starting quarterback Matt McDonald early in the first quarter when he was hit late by Aggies safety Dylan Early while going out of bounds on a third-down run. He was replaced by Orth, who twice led the Falcons into field-goal range in the first half but Mason Lawler missed both tries. The Aggies scored first to make it 7-0 on Pavia's 15-yard scoring pass to Star Thomas on their first possession of the game. The junior quarterback later added a 2-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to Eric Marsh. - New Mexico State/AP College Football
