  12/13/20 - Spencer PetrasrSr/2025, Utah State, 6-5, 230 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Spencer Petras has completed eight games as Iowa's starting quarterback, and it's still difficult to get a read on his ceiling. We do know that the Hawkeyes have won six of the eight games. We can say that Petras outplayed his counterparts in three of them (Michigan State, Illinois and Wisconsin). But it's also true that Petras has yet to put together a complete game. He sometimes started strong and struggled late (particularly against Northwestern and Minnesota). The past two games, he was terrible early but eventually found a rhythm. After the Week 2 loss to the Wildcats, which ended up deciding the Big Ten West title, Petras wasn't asked to do as much.

And, within the framework of the offense, he avoided crippling mistakes, with only two interceptions and a pair of fumbles during Iowa's six-game winning streak. Petras has completed 140 of 245 passes (57.1%) for 1,569 yards and nine touchdowns. That's a 119 efficiency rating that puts him in the bottom half of Big Ten quarterbacks. It's also why you can expect an open competition at the quarterback spot next spring, with Alex Padilla and Deuce Hogan in the mix, and perhaps a transfer if the Hawkeyes really don't feel they have the answer at the most important position on the current roster. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  12/12/20 - Spencer PetrasrSr/2025, Utah State, 6-5, 230 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Spencer Petras threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns to Ihmir Smith-Marsette to lead No. 19 Iowa past No. 25 Wisconsin 28-7 Saturday, the Hawkeyes' sixth win in a row. Iowa (6-2, 6-2 Big Ten) beat the Badgers (2-3, 2-3) for the first time since 2015 to reclaim the Heartland Trophy. Hawkeyes players celebrated by making snow angels after flurries picked up in the second half and blanketed the field in white.

Iowa's offense came alive in the second half after both teams struggled in the first. Petras found Smith-Marsette for 19-yard touchdown in the third quarter to give the Hawkeyes a 14-0 lead. The Badgers cut it in half after a muffed punt set them up at the Iowa 25, with Nakia Watson punching the ball in from the 1. Iowa took control from there. Petras connected with Smith-Marsette for a 53-yard touchdown to make it 21-7 late in the third. - Iowa/AP College Football

  12/12/20 - Calvin Tyler Jr.rSr/2023, Utah State, 5-08, 204 (DS#47 RB) + More +

For Calvin Tyler Jr., transferring was never an option. Between the injuries and the talent ahead of him on the depth chart, you couldn't blame the Oregon State running back if he had gone searching for playing time elsewhere. Plenty of players in his shoes would have caught the first flight out of town. "That never crossed my mind," Tyler said. "I've never been a guy to get up and run when things get hard." So he persevered. He trudged through a grueling rehab process to come back from the torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in 2018 and reminded himself every single day of his purpose and his plan.

Last Saturday, Tyler's self-belief paid off as he suddenly became Oregon State's No. 1 running back option during its game at Utah. He didn't let the opportunity pass him by and now he is hoping to rediscover the talent and physical running style that he flashed as a true freshman four years ago and continue his dream of reaching the NFL. "I feel like all my life, I've been patient and persevering - going through things and overcoming them," Tyler said. "But my biggest thing: I'm a big religious guy. So I trust God. I know everything is gonna work out for the better. I always prepared every week like I would play. I just trusted God." - Gazette Times
