Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras took some Iowa fans by surprise Tuesday night. A video showed Petras launching a pass with ease for roughly 70 or 75 yards while he was at the Manning Passing Academy. "My goodness," one fan tweeted as it circulated around social media. By Thursday evening, it had almost 72,000 views on Twitter. But the person who recorded the video wasn't surprised. "The biggest thing that people don't realize, I think, in Iowa is how well he throws the football and how strong his arm is," said Tony Racioppi, who was on the staff at the Manning camp.

Racioppi also has been Petras' private quarterback coach, working with him on many of the tweaks that could make a big difference for the Hawkeyes' offense. Not unlike other Power Five quarterbacks, there were some adjustments needed to his mechanics when Petras visited Racioppi shortly after the 2021 season. Offseason priorities in 2022 have included "cleaning up his throwing sequence," adjusting his footwork, staying balanced and maneuvering around the pocket. "When my fundamentals are correct, I don't miss," Petras said in the spring. - The Gazette

Auburn commit and Minnesota native Craig McDonald had several options when he entered the transfer portal after a successful season at Iowa State. McDonald fielded offers from Wisconsin, Boston College, Memphis, and Florida State, among others, before choosing to play for Bryan Harsin on the Plains. McDonald had 41 tackles and was tied for the team lead with two interceptions last season after redshirting for the 2020 season at Iowa State. He was a three-star recruit in the 2020 recruiting class. The 6'2" 190 pound safety has three years of eligibility as a redshirt freshman. He's a physical safety that could fill the void left by Smoke Monday departing to New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent. We caught up with McDonald via cellphone to discuss why he chose Auburn and his plans to improve as an athlete. - Birmingham News

Auburn football landed its second transfer portal commitment of the past 10 days Saturday, as former Iowa State safety Craig McDonald announced via Twitter he'd be coming to the Plains next season. McDonald spent two seasons with the Cyclones, playing in four games in 2020 and registering a tackle. In 2021, he played in 13 games, logging 41 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a pass breakup and two interceptions. In a loss to Oklahoma last season, McDonald recorded 10 tackles and an interception, and also had six tackles and a pass breakup against Clemson in the Cheez-it Bowl. Listed a 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, McDonald entered the portal on April 30. Out of high school, the Minneapolis native chose the Cyclones over offers from Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Purdue. - Opelika-Auburn News

Auburn isn't done adding to the 2022 recruiting class, specifically in the secondary. Iowa State's Craig McDonald became the seventh transfer to join the Tigers. He announced the move on Twitter while visiting the Plains. A former 3-star recruit, McDonald is a redshirt freshman and will have three years of eligibility. He's the sixth defensive back to join the Tigers either through the transfer portal or high school. Starting three games for the Cyclones last season, he was tied for the team lead with a pair of interceptions.

Coming out of Minnehaha (Minn.) Academy, McDonald was the country's 66th-best safety prospect, per 247Sports composite rankings. He redshirted in 2020 after appearing in four games. In 2021, while earning a spot on the All-Big 12 Academic Team, he recorded 41 tackles. "We watched some film and they want me to be even more physical," McDonald told Auburn Undercover's Jason Caldwell. "They are going to put me into even more positions to be successful. I'm really looking forward to that." - Birmingham News

Levi Williams ran for 200 yards and four touchdowns and passed for 127 yards and another touchdown to lead Wyoming to a 52-38 win over Kent State on Tuesday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Williams, who set a career-best single-game rushing performance, tied the Potato Bowl record for most rushing touchdowns and was named the game's MVP. "He's very gifted and can run like the wind," Wyoming coach Craig Bohl said. "And obviously, it's great to see him make those plays he's very capable of making." Kent State (7-7), playing in its fifth bowl game in school history, raced out to a 17-7 lead and held a 24-21 advantage at halftime, but the Golden Flashes couldn't hold up against Wyoming's relentless rushing attack. "That's not the outcome we were looking for," Kent State coach Sean Lewis said. "Areas that hampered us all year long hurt us today...But I'm eager and excited to get back to work and build a program that Kent State can be proud of." Wyoming (7-6) scored 21 consecutive points to start the second half, including scoring runs of 27 and 80 yards by Williams, to build a 42-24 lead that proved to be too much for Kent State to overcome. Wyoming senior linebacker Chad Muma and Butkus Award finalist didn't disappoint in his final college game, leading the Cowboys on defense with 13 tackles and a half sack. - Wyoming/AP College Football

Although it is not as common as it used to be, college football fans are still typically greeted with at least one surprise on national signing day, and Utah State was no exception on Day 1 of the early signing period. The Aggies signed three transfers Wednesday morning who had not previously disclosed their intentions on social media. Former Miami safety Gurvan Hall inked his letter of intent with the Aggies, as did Washington linebacker MJ Tafisi and Arkansas State defensive back Anthony Switzer, who was brought in to compete at the striker position. The Aggies have greatly benefited from the transfer portal on their way to a Mountain West championship this season as Quazzel White (right tackle), Logan Bonner (quarterback), Calvin Tyler Jr. (running back), Brandon Bowling (wide receiver), Byron Vaughns (defensive end), Patrick Joyner Jr. (DE), Justin Rice (linebacker), Hunter Reynolds (safety) and Monte McGary (safety) have all played a big part in the team's success. All of those athletes were part of Blake Anderson's first recruiting class at the Aggie helm. - Herald Journal Tribune

2021 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (COACHES): WR - Deven Thompkins, Sr., Utah State,...Thompkins, a 5-foot-8, 155-pound wide receiver from Fort Myers, Florida (Dunbar HS), earned all-league honors for the first time in his career and is the first Aggie wide receiver to earn first-team all-conference honors since Aaron Jones was named first-team all-Big West Conference in 2000. USU was an independent in 2001 and 2002 as Kevin Curtis was named to the all-independent team both seasons. Overall, Thompkins is just the 10th wide receiver in school history to earn first-team all-conference honors.

Thompkins, who was named the MW Offensive Player of the Week twice this year, leads the nation in receiving with 1,543 yards (128.6 ypg). Thompkins is also first in the MW and fourth in the nation in all-purpose yards with 1,803 (150.3 ypg), third in the MW and 11th in the nation in receptions with 87 (7.2 pg), fifth in the MW and 33rd in the nation in yards per reception (17.7), and sixth in the MW and 24th in the nation in receiving touchdowns with nine (0.75 pg). Thompkins, who set the school record for receiving yards in a season this year, also has eight 100-yard receiving games to tie for first nationally. - Utah State Football
