  08/08/21 - Tate MartellrSr/2023, UNLV, 5-11, 205 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Tate Martell did not suit up on the first day of UNLV training camp, but it's only a matter of time before the high-profile transfer jumps into the team's quarterback battle. UNLV opened camp on Wednesday with a two-hour practice session, and the addition of Martell has instilled some hope around the program, even coming off an 0-6 campaign in 2020. The team kept him out of sight during the portion of Wednesday's practice that was open to the media, but he later joined the team on the field as a nonparticipant.

Head coach Marcus Arroyo said Martell, who has enrolled as a walk-on, has not yet been cleared to practice. "We had a conversation over summer a few times, and over the time we got a chance to know each other," Arroyo said. "About our backgrounds and what we were both looking for, what our culture stands for, trying to get a feel for where he's at, what he's looking for, if there was a fit." Arroyo said there is no timeline for when Martell will be cleared to play, but when it happens the fifth-year transfer should immediately enter the team's quarterback battle as a heavy favorite to win the job. Junior Justin Rogers and sophomore Doug Brumfield are currently listed as co-No. 1 QBs, with freshman Cameron Friel also competing for snaps. Martell, a former state champion and Gatorade National Player of the Year at Bishop Gorman, committed to UNLV two weeks ago after spending his first three years at Ohio State and Miami. - Las Vegas Sun

  07/29/21 - Tate MartellrSr/2023, UNLV, 5-11, 205 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Former Bishop Gorman star quarterback Tate Martell will play football at UNLV this season. Martell announced his decision commitment through an interview with Franchise Sports Media. A person with knowledge of the situation said that he's walking on to the team as an "athlete," though the 23-year-old told Franchise Sports Media that he had other opportunities to play elsewhere on scholarship. "Honestly, this is where I want to be and who I want to play for," Martell told Franchise Sports Media. "UNLV checked off all the boxes for me on and off of the field. But I just want to come in, grind and compete. Just put my head down and work and be a leader and a person Coach (Marcus) Arroyo, the coaching staff, and my teammates can trust and count on."

Martell guided the Gaels to three consecutive mythical national championships and concluded his high school career in 2016 with one of the most impressive resumes in prep football history. He committed verbally to Washington and Texas A&M before signing with Ohio State as one of the top quarterback recruits in the class of 2017. He redshirted in 2017 and backed up future NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins the following season. He transferred to Miami in 2019 and played sparingly behind quaterbacks Jarren Williams and N'Kosi Perry. He did not play in 2020. - Las Vegas Review Journal

Martell, who most recently played for Washington, has two years of eligibility remaining. Martell first committed to Washington as a 14-year old in 2012 - exactly nine years ago Sunday. The four-star prospect ranked No. 56 in the 2017 class per the 247 Sports composite eventually decommitted, then committed to and decommitted from Texas A&M, before choosing Ohio State.   The Mountain West released its preseason football poll Thursday ahead of its annual media days at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, and UNLV is in a familiar place. At the bottom. The Rebels were picked to finish last in the conference's West Division by a panel of the league's media, garnering a total of 26 points - the fewest among the 12 teams in the league. Rival UNR was picked first in the West, earning 19 votes and a total of 141 points. Boise State was picked to win the Mountain Division for the ninth consecutive season. UNLV coach Marcus Arroyo said the Rebels "pay very little attention" to the preseason poll, but noted that "if we start worrying about that stuff, we're worried about the wrong stuff." "What anybody decides where you get picked has nothing to do with your football team. We don't control that," he said. "The only thing we control is how we play and how we work together." - Las Vegas Review Journal

UCF added another SEC defender to its roster with the addition of Missouri cornerback Jarvis Ware, who committed to the Knights as a transfer. The Apopka native becomes the ninth player to join the program after spending time in the transfer portal. He signed with the Tigers out of Wekiva High as part of the 2018 recruiting class. Ware spent three seasons at Missouri, stepping into the starting role midway through the 2019 season. He finished with 50 career tackles and five passes defended but his biggest highlight came against Florida last season when he returned his first career interception 59 yards for a touchdown. UCF already landed several former SEC standouts through the transfer market, including running back Mark-Antony Richards (Auburn), defensive lineman Big Kat Bryant (Auburn) and Marco Domio (Auburn). - Orlando Sentinel

Missouri has lost another cornerback to the NCAA transfer portal. Jarvis Ware, who played in 28 games the last three years and made 15 starts over the last two seasons, entered the portal on Monday, he confirmed. As of Monday, he had not scheduled any recruiting visits, he said. Ware missed all of spring practices while recovering from a knee injury while living at his home in Apopka, Florida. Ware returned an interception for a touchdown at Florida last fall, the team's only interception by a cornerback over the last two seasons. Last month, newly arrived cornerback Jadarrius Perkins entered the portal and has since committed to Florida. Perkins came to Mizzou in January from junior college and was expected to compete for a starting job. The Tigers have one returning starting cornerback on the roster, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., who started all 10 games as a freshman last season. - Post-Dispatch

  05/02/21 - Dominic GicintorSr/2024, UNLV, 5-09, 183 (DS#175 WR) + More +

The New Mexico State football team picked up a second offensive player with SEC experience. The Aggies recently announced the signing of Dominic Gicinto, a 5-foot-10 slot receiver from Missouri. Gicinto will be eligible to play immediately and he has two years of eligibility remaining. Gicinto joins graduate transfer Eli Johnson from Mississippi as new offensive players for the Aggies in the fall. Johnson should start at the center position, and Gicinto gives the Aggies another target for either Jonah Johnson or Weston Eget. "(Aggies recruiting coordinator Cory Martin) found Dominic through recruiting ties with other coaches he knew," Aggies head coach Doug Martin said. "Dominic brings speed and a great run after the catch skill set. He will probably be the fastest wide receiver we have. He will be an inside receiver for us and line up in the backfield at times also." Like Johnson, Gicinto entered the transfer portal following a coaching change. "That didn't really stand out other than I saw that the team was in a rebuild and it seemed like a good place if you wanted to be part of something great," Gicinto said. - Las Cruces Sun News

  04/12/21 - Charles WilliamsrSr/2022, UNLV, 5-10, 200 (DS#40 RB) + More +

Charles Williams has done a lot during his time at UNLV. The sixth-year running back has a 1,000-yard season, 19 career touchdowns and an All-Mountain West selection to his name. But his biggest accomplishment came last week, when he welcomed his daughter into the world. The first-time father said his daughter, Kamiyah, weighed in at six pounds, six ounces and measured 20 inches (she got her height from her mom, the 5-foot-9 Williams said). "It was a great experience watching her come into the world," Williams said. "I was speechless … She makes me happy every day I come home. I'm glad I've got her in my life now." The sure-handed back said that handling a newborn is not all that different from securing the football. "Basically the same: Don't drop it," Williams said. - Las Vegas Sun

Finally, his 33-yard attempt with 3:48 to play in the game split the uprights and gave the Bears a six-point cushion in the deciding moments. Pizano extended his string to six straight made field goals on the season and also averaged 51.6 yards on 7 kickoffs. - Missouri Valley Conference Football

Martell, the 2016 Gatorade Player of the Year and former wildly popular Ohio State Buckeye before he transferred to Miami in January 2019, entered the NCAA transfer portal Wednesday. The news was first reported by 247Sports, which later reported that redshirt junior running back Robert Burns, who had only 16 carries in 2020, has also entered the portal.   01/02/21 - Connor MurphyrSr/2022, UNLV, 6-6, 270 (DS#999 DE) + More +

Redshirt senior defensive end Connor Murphy became the latest USC player to announce his intent to play elsewhere next season. With the NCAA affording players an additional year of eligibility because of the pandemic, Murphy will have an extra available season to use wherever he may land. Murphy came to USC as a four-star prospect at outside linebacker, but never quite found a consistent role in the rotation. This season, with a new defensive staff in place, his playing time at defensive end diminished even further. Murphy played in three of six games this season, registering three tackles and a fumble recovery. - Los Angeles Times
