UNLV's football team isn't finished playing at Sam Boyd Stadium, after all. The Rebels will return to their former home Sept. 5 to play Louisiana Tech. The university still plans on opening its season Aug. 29 against California at Allegiant Stadium, where the Rebels have a joint-use agreement with the Raiders. But a venue for the school's game Sept. 12 against Arizona State is not yet finalized. UNLV athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois said admission for the Louisiana Tech game is free for returning season ticket holders and discounted for new season ticket holders as part of the school's Faithful Fan pricing package. "This is our way of expressing our appreciation to our season ticket holders," Reed-Francois said. Also, seating for the game against Louisiana Tech is expected to be on general admission basis. The NCAA, however, has not yet cleared the return of college sports because of the coronavirus pandemic. - Las Vegas Review Journal

UNLV players in the NFL draft were a common sight in the early part of this century. Between 1999 and 2010, the Rebels had just three years when a player wasn't selected. In 2002, the school had a record four players taken. But since center Joe Hawley went in the fourth round of the 2010 draft to the Atlanta Falcons, the Rebels haven't had a player taken. Javin White, who can play safety, cornerback and linebacker, could end the streak when the draft takes place Thursday through Saturday. "I'm trying to break that drought," White said. "I feel like I'm that one to break it." "I know I'm going to get drafted," White said. "It doesn't matter if I go from the fourth round to the seventh round. I know after a while certain teams are going to be interested to see what I can do. They're not going to want another team to have me, so they're not going to take that risk of trying to get me in free agency."

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, White wasn't able to participate in a pro day or visit NFL team facilities. So he put together his own pro day March 19, and his Las Vegas-based agent, Ross Jones, sent each team a video. White also has game tape for NFL teams to evaluate. He made 79 tackles last season, including 8½ for loss, to go with 11 pass breakups, three interceptions and two forced fumbles. He was named honorable-mention All-Mountain West. - Review Journal

Miami fired offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dan Enos on Friday, one day after the Hurricanes were shut out by Louisiana Tech in the Independence Bowl and finished with a 6-7 record. Enos was with Miami for only one season, and to say it didn’t go to plan would be an understatement. The Hurricanes finished the year on a three-game losing streak, endured wildly inconsistent quarterback play and are ranked 129th - out of 130 teams - in third-down conversion percentage. Only Akron, which finished the season winless, was worse than Miami in that department. Miami converted 27.2% of its third downs, Akron converted 26.4%.

The Hurricanes announced the decision with a one-sentence statement: "The University of Miami football program announced Friday that Dan Enos has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach." The numbers did the rest of the talking. Miami is ranked 89th nationally in scoring offense, 99th in total offense, 122nd in rushing offense and 122nd in red zone offense. It used three quarterbacks in the 14-0 bowl loss, and still managed only 227 yards of offense. - AP College Football

2019 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (COACHES): RB - Charles Williams, Jr., UNLV,...Williams (Fresno, CA/Bullard HS) is the fourth UNLV running back to be named First Team All-MW, joining Lexington Thomas in 2017, Dominique Dorsey in 2004 and Jeremi Rudolph in 2000. His net total of 1,257 yards during the regular season is the seventh-most in school history, led the Mountain West and currently ranks 16th in the nation. Williams joins former UNLV backs Dorsey (2004), Ickey Woods (1987) and Kirk Jones (1984) as a conference regular-season rushing champion.

The Chuck Wagon moved into seventh place on UNLV's career rushing list (2,445) and his six 100-yard games this fall gave him nine in his career, which ties for seventh in Rebel history. Williams went for a career-high 186 yards in UNLV's win over San Jose State in the home finale and sprinted for a career-long 80-yard run for a touchdown in last week's victory at UNR. His 11 rushing touchdowns ranked second in the MW and tied for sixth in UNLV history. - UNLV Football

2019 BIG SOUTH OFFENSIVE FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Hajj-Malik Williams, QB, Fr., Campbell,...Williams enjoyed a record-breaking campaign in his first year leading the Camels. A finalist for the Jerry Rice National Freshman of the Year Award, Williams received four Big South Freshman of the Week nods as well as five STATS Honorable Mention accolades in 2019. Williams established Big South-freshman records for passing touchdowns (17), total offensive yards (2,686), rushing yards by a freshman quarterback (664) and rushing touchdowns by a freshman signal-caller (9). He was responsible for 27 total touchdowns this year - including a touchdown reception against Hampton on Oct. 19.   UNLV coach Tony Sanchez has been fired after five seasons in charge of the football program. The school announced Monday that it is parting ways with Sanchez after this season, which wraps up with UNLV facing rival Nevada for the Fremont Cannon on Saturday. UNLV said it will immediately begin searching for a new coach. Sanchez made the leap to the college ranks when he was hired by UNLV in December 2014 after six years as the coach at Las Vegas prep powerhouse Bishop Gorman High School. Sanchez is 19-40 at UNLV, including 3-8 this season. UNLV credited Sanchez for his fundraising efforts that helped in the construction of the $34 million Fertitta Football Complex, which opened on campus this fall. “We appreciate everything that Tony has done for our university and football program,” athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois said in a statement. - AP College Football

Charles Williams scored from the 1 in the final 1:15 and Kolo Uasike picked off a last-gasp pass as UNLV came out on top of a wild fourth quarter with a 38-35 defeat of San Jose State in the last game at Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday. UNLV (3-8, 1-6 Mountain West) built a 21-6 lead only to swap the lead four times in the final 15 minutes before coming out on top at the end of 49 years at Sam Boyd.

Williams, who entered the game as the Mountain West's leading rusher -- and ranked 29th in the nation -- with 933 yards, gained 186 more against San Jose State with three touchdowns. He scored twice in the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with 1:15 remaining to cap a nine-play drive. The Spartans (4-7, 1-6) zoomed into the red zone on the ensuing possession with an 80-yard first-down completion from Josh Love to Isaiah Hamilton, advancing to the UNLV 12. San Jose State had a third-and-goal at the 5 with six seconds left to play, but Love's pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Uasike. Love threw for 465 yards and three TDs but was picked off four times. - UNLV/AP College Football
