SEPT 5 CONFERENCE USA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: K Jared Sackett made the most of his return to the UTSA program in the season opener versus No. 24 Houston on Saturday in San Antonio. The senior transfer kicker drilled a 37-yard field goal as time expired to tie the score at 24-24 and force overtime. In the first extra period, the Fort Worth native split the uprights from 39 yards out to send the contest into double overtime before the Roadrunners eventually dropped a 37-35 heartbreaker to the Cougars. Sackett was a two-time Lou Groza Award semifinalist and Freshman All-American for UTSA in 2017-18 before transferring to Arkansas and then USF prior to rejoining the Roadrunners this year. - Conference USA Football

Dematrius Davis and Myles Crawley threw touchdown passes in the first quarter and Alabama State held on to defeat Division II Miles College 21-13 on Saturday night. Stanto Dunn scored late in the first quarter to make it 21-0 but couldn't muster any more against the Golden Bears. Jayce Melock capped a two-play, 59-yard drive early in the first by catching a 14-yard slant pass to open the scoring, a play set up by a 45-yard completion on a wide receiver reverse pass. Crawley threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Darius Edmonds on his first throw of the game to make it 14-0. Dunn capped the scoring for the Hornets (2-0), whose drives covered 59, 56 and 51 yards. After a pair of field goals Miles got back in the game on a 15-yard pass from Jacob Millhouse to Collin Woods with 2:54 to go. A turnover at the Miles 12-yard line with 1:10 left gave the Golden Bears, who were down to their third-string quarterback, a final chance but they couldn't get out of their end before time ran out during a multiple lateral razzle-dazzle play. - AP College Football

Fall camp has concluded and the 2022 college football season is less than two weeks away. Depth charts are beginning to become more clear for many programs across the country, which ultimately plays a role in some players looking for more playing time at another school. That rings true for offensive lineman Jaylen Garth. Inside Texas reported that the third-year offensive lineman entered the NCAA transfer portal on Tuesday. Garth appeared in two games for the Longhorns last season, Texas Tech and Rice, after redshirting his true freshman season in 2020. Coming out of high school, he was rated a four-star prospect and the No. 20 overall offensive tackle in the country for the 2020 class, according to 247Sports. - USA Today
