In normal times, former UTEP defensive end Denzel Chukwukelu would be scrambling to meet with NFL teams, laying the groundwork for a free-agent deal following the NFL Draft in two weeks. Instead, he's locked down in his El Paso apartment, doing what he can to stay in shape, keep in touch with NFL teams and wait to learn what his future holds. "I do 500 pushups everyday, staying healthy, staying in football shape, doing workouts," Chukwukelu said. "When I get to a team I won't have to catch up." Chukwukelu, fellow defensive lineman Chris Richardson and quarterback Kai Locksley are the three Miners with the best chance of landing with an NFL team. But even though the draft is still set to take place from April 23-25, everything after that is on hold. That means the first set of "OTAs" (organized team activities), set for May, are unlikely to happen and that's not good for players who figure to be in a scramble to make a roster like this Miner trio. "It's got to be harder," UTEP coach Dana Dimel said. "Teams aren't able to bring kids in. If you're not a big-name guy, you're not getting as much exposure. The good news was we had our pro day (on March 11), that's the positive. A lot of kids (at other schools) are having to send in film of their pro days. "In general this hurts the whole evaluation process." - El Paso Times

Gavin Baechle kicked a 35-yard field goal midway in the fourth quarter to secure UTEP's 36-34 victory over Houston Baptist on Saturday night. The game winner, with 8:15 remaining, was Baechle's third field goal of the evening. The Huskies were driving to retake the lead on the next series when Chris Richardson sacked Bailey Zappe, causing a fumble that Justin Rogers recovered at UTEP's 26. The Miners were then able to run out the clock.

The season-opening victory was the first for UTEP since starting the 2016 season with a 38-22 win over New Mexico State. UTEP won just one game last year, defeating Rice 34-26. Houston Baptist was 1-10 in each of the past two seasons. The Miners took an early lead, going into the break ahead 20-17 after Baechle booted a 21-yarder as time expired in the first half. He started the scoring with a 30-yard field goal. The Huskies took their final lead, 34-33, when Ean Beek scored from the 3 with 12:59 remaining. Brandon Jones threw for 268 yards and a score for UTEP. Treyvon Hughes rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Zappe led HBU with 300 passing yards and two TDs. - AP College Football

UTEP Director of Athletics Jim Senter and head football coach Dana Dimel announced on Friday that the suspension to Kai Locksley has been lifted, and he has been reinstated to the UTEP football team. "While the legal process has not come to a complete conclusion, we believe that the final charges against Kai will not be as severe as what has been reported," Senter said. "Young people make mistakes and it is important that they learn from these mistakes. We believe in restorative justice and feel that Kai will benefit more in the long run by getting the necessary support and guidance from his coaches and teammates, rather than being dismissed from the team." - UTEP Football

Wadley suffered the injury during summer conditioning and will require surgery, sidelining the Kennedale, Texas native for the entirety of the upcoming season. "This is an unfortunate incident for our team and this young man during preparations for the 2019 season," Dimel said. "Quardraiz will head to California this week to receive medical attention from one of the best doctors in the country. He will be out for this coming season, but he will have the opportunity to redshirt and come back for his senior season in 2020."
