OCT 24 BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Texas Tech's Behren Morton threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns in his second career start to lead Texas Tech to a 48-10 win over West Virginia. It was the second-consecutive 300-yard performance for Morton, who became just the second Red Raider all-time to throw for 300 yards against Big 12 foes in his first two career starts. Morton, who woke up ill Saturday morning before the game, also rushed for 17 yards in the win, helping the Red Raiders convert 6-of-7 fourth down attempts in the process. Morton was responsible for five of those conversions on his own with four passing completions and one rushing. He is one of only two FBS freshmen to throw for at least 300 yards in multiple games this year as he has totaled 704 yards through the air over the last two games. Behind Morton, the Red Raiders secured their largest margin of victory all-time in the series with West Virginia. It was also TTU's largest win over a Big 12 foe since defeating Kansas, 65-19, on October 7, 2017. - Big 12 Football

Behren Morton threw two touchdown passes, Tahj Brooks ran for two scores and Texas Tech used a fast start to beat West Virginia 48-10 on Saturday. Coming off a bye week and playing in Lubbock for the first time in nearly a month, the Red Raiders (4-3, 2-2 Big 12) scored 17 points off of turnovers, broke a two-game losing streak and improved to 3-0 at home. Texas Tech seized control with touchdowns on its first two drives and the Red Raiders' fast-tempo offense kept West Virginia off balance. Texas Tech surpassed 100 offensive plays, including 55 in the first half when it converted six of seven times on fourth down. Brooks had 17 carries for a season-high 107 yards, including first-quarter TD runs of 1 and 19 yards. Morton, a redshirt freshman, was solid again in his second straight start. He completed 28 of 45 passes for 325 yards after throwing for 379 two weeks ago in a loss at No. 11 Oklahoma State.

After Texas Tech's Malik Dunlap intercepted an underthrown ball on West Virginia's first drive of the third quarter, the Red Raiders' Xavier White caught a pass from Morton and weaved 37 yards through traffic for a 55-yard touchdown. White later had a 27-yard catch along the sideline to set up Morton's 12-yard scoring toss to Loic Fouonji for a 31-3 lead. White had eight catches for a career-high 139 yards. Texas Tech entered the game with one of the worst turnover margins in the Bowl Subdivision. The Red Raiders intercepted three passes and recovered a CJ Donaldson fumble near midfield. After the fumble recovery, SaRodorick Thompson scored on a 13-yard run for a 38-10 lead to start the fourth. Texas Tech kicked a short field goal after JT Daniels' career-high third interception. Daniels finished 23 of 36 for 194 yards for the Mountaineers (3-4, 1-3). It marked the fifth road loss of at least 25 points for West Virginia under fourth-year coach Neal Brown. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

SEPT 26 BIG 12 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Texas Tech's Trey Wolff was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts in Texas Tech's OT victory over No. 22 Texas. All three of his field goals came in the second half or overtime as he found the uprights from 27 yards out midway through the third quarter and then from 45 yards with only 21 seconds remaining in regulation. His final field goal was the game-winner as he sailed his attempt inside the left upright from 20 yards out to send the Red Raiders to their second top-25 victory of the season. It marked the fourth time in Wolff's career he has made three field goals and the first time this season as he is now 5-of-6 on the year. His field goal late in regulation was only two yards shy of his career-high and gave the Red Raiders a 34-31 lead. - Big 12 Football

Texas Tech kicker Trey Wolff had fans ready to celebrate like they hadn't in 14 years with what they thought was a game-winner in the final seconds. Turns out they just had to wait a little longer. Wolff kicked a 20-yard field goal in overtime, lifting the Red Raiders over No. 22 Texas 37-34 after they overcame a two-touchdown deficit in the second half but let a lead slip away in the final minute Saturday. Texas' Bijan Robinson fumbled on the first play of overtime, and Donovan Smith led the Red Raiders to the 2-yard line before Wolff's winning kick in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

The Red Raiders (3-1, 1-0) thought Wolff's 45-yard kick for a 34-31 lead with 21 seconds left in regulation was enough for their first home win over Texas since Michael Crabtree's last-second catch beat the top-ranked Longhorns in 2008. The Longhorns (2-2, 0-1) had other ideas. Hudson Card's 28-yard pass to Tarique Milton got the Longhorns close with six seconds remaining, and they picked up another 10 yards on a quick pass with two seconds to go. Bert Auburn's 48-yard kick as time expired forced OT. Texas Tech fans might have had flashbacks to two years ago, when the Red Raiders couldn't hold a 56-41 lead in the final three minutes of regulation in a 63-56 overtime loss on the same field. Smith threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns. Myles Price caught a career-high 13 passes for 98 yards, including a 5-yarder on fourth-and-3 on the way to what the Red Raiders thought would be Wolff's winning kick in regulation. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

Donovan Smith came off the bench to throw four touchdown passes, Tahj Brooks ran for three scores and Texas Tech blew out lower-division Murray State 63-10 in coach Joey McGuire's debut Saturday night. Smith had scoring tosses on his first two passes after replacing Tyler Shough in the first half. McGuire indicated he planned to play both, but said at halftime Shough was injured and probably wouldn't return. Shough was on the sideline in the second half with a sling on his left (non-throwing) shoulder. "We always preach stay ready so you don't got to get ready," said Smith, who was 14-of-16 passing for 221 yards without an interception. "Every time we're in the film room, every time we're practicing, we always take reps in the back." Brooks finished with 50 yards and scoring runs of 14, 3 and 23 yards, the last giving the Red Raiders a 42-10 lead late in the first half on the way to their 23rd consecutive victory in a home opener.

Texas Tech's first meeting with Murray State and 20th consecutive victory over an FCS opponent was similar to the lower-division matchups from 2010-19, when the average margin of victory was 40 points. The Red Raiders, who scored TDs on their first eight possessions, were coming off consecutive years of closer-than-expected FCS openers under former coach Matt Wells - victories over Houston Baptist and Stephen F. Austin - before Wells was fired midseason last year. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

Tyler Shough was loping along near the front of the pack during a team conditioning run one day this summer when a long-legged Texas Tech teammate blew past him. It wasn't any of the Red Raiders' lanky wide receivers, nor a defensive back or a running back. The guy finishing strong was Baylor Cupp, a 6-foot-7, 253-pound tight end. "I'm usually out in the front with a lot of that combo group," Shough said, "and I see Baylor come up and fly by me. I'm like, 'What the heck? Where did this guy come from?'...He's so physically talented." There's never been a question about Cupp's talent level. Coming out of Texas high-school power Brock in the spring of 2019, Cupp was rated the No. 16 recruit in the nation by 247Sports and No. 134 by Rivals. As tight end prospects go, he was as good as it gets.

In three years since at Texas A&M, Cupp missed two full seasons with ankle and shoulder injuries. He finally got onto the field for 10 games last year, mostly as a backup. Nevertheless, thinking his status in the Aggies' eyes might have been diminished by his injury history and not wanting to be labeled, Cupp looked for a fresh start this off-season. He's found it at Texas Tech, where coaches and teammates want to see him reach his potential. As recently as November, A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said Cupp "still has a chance to be a great player." "I was pretty highly recruited and people had a high expectation for me," Cupp said. "Those were some really tough injuries, and I haven't played much since I got into college, but I think I'm 10 times a better player than I was coming out of high school. I've developed a ton. I just need to stay healthy and put that on the field." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Joey McGuire says Marquis "Muddy" Waters can be an NFL draft pick if the Texas Tech defensive back reaches his potential in 2022. That was Waters' plan last season: Transfer to Tech, put up impressive stats and game tape and be in an NFL training camp at this very moment. Bijan Robinson spoiled the plan. In last year's Big 12 opener, Waters tried to arm tackle Texas' 220-pound running back and suffered a grade-three tear of a pectoral muscle. He underwent surgery the next week and missed the last nine games of the season. Now he's back on the field for the Red Raiders, trying to do as he intended at this time last year. So far, so good. At the end of spring, new defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter called Waters probably the team's most productive player on defense "as far as a guy making explosive plays, intercepting the football, getting sacks, forcing fumbles."

Waters, 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, is playing Star, which, depending on circumstances, can be a safety, a nickel cornerback or an outside linebacker. "He's a dynamic football player," DeRuyter said. "He's a heck of a football player. Really excited about his potential in our defense. I told him, I think he's got the ability - if our coaches and I can get it out of him - to be an all-conference type of player." For all the time he missed last year, Waters is likely to make up for it this year. Based on what McGuire has seen, the sixth-year senior from Delray Beach, Florida, is going to fit a lot of job descriptions. "He's one that's going to be really interesting," the Tech head coach said, "because depending on the packages we go to, I don't know if you want to take him off the field. I think he can play the boundary safety, the free safety. "He reminds me of the Jalen Pitre kid that Baylor had that just got drafted in the second round. Tearing that pec last year hurt him. I think he was one of the guys that was really fixing to have a good year." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Oregon's tight end room has added depth and speed from the defense. Terrell Tilmon, who had five tackles while appearing on special teams last season, has moved from outside linebacker to tight end before the start of fall camp on Friday. "We felt like he would give us his best chance of helping our football team and being able to impact us was going to be there on the offensive side of the ball," Oregon coach Dan Lanning said. "I also think he can have a big role on special teams as well. We were in the offensive meeting (Tuesday) and (offensive coordinator Kenny) Dillingham asked the question who's our fastest tight end and all the tight ends point to Tilmon; he can run a little bit. Excited, it's still a new position for him. He's still developing there so we'll see what it looks like in fall camp."

At 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, as of last year's roster, Tilmon has comparable height to UO's other tight ends but is 20-30 pounds lighter than the other four. Cam McCormick, Terrance Ferguson and Moliki Matavao each said Tilmon's been a good addition to the room during player-ed practices this summer. "He's been great to have in the room," McCormick said. "I think it helps; the depth in the room is huge. Being able to help everybody get rest. He's learning a lot. There's probably a million things coming at him but he's doing great." - The Oregonian

After overcoming a debilitating concussion last season and online/off campus challenges this spring, Texas Tech Linebacker Kosi Eldridge is gearing up for his last year of college football in 2022. Eldridge has three years of Big 12 experience, he is in the two-deep for Joey McGuire's team and his head is clear again. The latter is no small consideration, given that Eldridge wouldn't wish his last three months of 2021 on someone else. The play that sidelined him last October was so brutal he doesn't remember it except what he sees on film. "I don't watch it anymore," he said, "but I didn't know what happened. So I watched the play on film the next day to see what happened." The 6-foot, 233-pound Denton Ryan product returned four Saturdays later. He made a couple of tackles against Oklahoma, a couple more against Iowa State. And when the Red Raiders routed Mississippi State in the season-ending Liberty Bowl, he made a tackle and caused a fumble. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

2022 PRESEASON CHUCK BEDNARIK AWARD WATCH LIST: Tyree Wilson, Texas Tech, Senior LB,...Wilson developed into a key piece of the Texas Tech defense in his second year as a Red Raider in 2021, setting the tone as the team leader for both tackles for loss and sacks a year ago. He finished with 38 tackles on the season (26 solo), with 13.5 for a loss and 7.0 sacks marking easily the most productive season of his collegiate career thus far. He was named an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection by the conference coaches at the conclusion of the regular season and went on to earn the Defensive MVP of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl and was recognized on the Associated Press All-Bowl Team for his performance in the Red Raiders' bowl game versus Mississippi State. - Texas Tech Football
