  11/15/25 - Jacob RodriguezrSr/2026, Texas Tech, 6-1, 233 (DS#2 ILB) + More +

Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez struck the Heisman Trophy pose again after the first offensive touchdown of his career, Reggie Virgil scored three times and No. 8 Texas Tech routed UCF 48-9 on Saturday. The Red Raiders (10-1, 7-1 Big 12, No. 6 CFP) stayed on track for a shot at their first Big 12 championship in their regular-season home finale, reaching 10 victories for the first time since going 11-2 under the late Mike Leach in 2008. The Golden Knights (4-6, 1-6) didn't pick up a first down until they trailed 21-0 and dropped to 0-4 on the road, getting outscored 78-12 combined in the past two, a pair of trips to Texas. UCF had a season-low 52 yards rushing against the nation's No. 1 run defense. "The question was how were we going to handle success after last week," said coach Joey McGuire, referring to a 29-7 victory over BYU in a top-10 matchup. "I've got these old guys. It's a vet team. They believe in each other. They care about each other. I'm really proud of the way they played." Just as he did after a highlight-reel interception against the Cougars, Rodriguez lifted one leg and extended an arm while surrounded by teammates after the former high school quarterback scored on a 2-yard run in the wildcat. "Everybody's talking about quarterbacks for Heisman," McGuire said, "so we put him at quarterback today, he scored a touchdown." Rodriguez, who scored touchdowns on fumble recoveries this season and last against Oklahoma State, set up Vigil's third TD for a 35-2 lead with his fourth interception this season.

No need for another Heisman pose, though, after the TD. "We repped it throughout the week, and it looked good," Rodriguez said. "Obviously, we were going on scout team. When they said (as we) got closer to the goal line, "Be ready," so I ran over there from the other side of the sideline and I was ready to go." Virgil's first two scores came on the first two carries of his career in the second quarter, a 5-yarder early and a 30-yard sprint that ended with him hopping and skipping into the end zone. Cameron Dickey also had two rushing TDs. Behren Morton threw for 149 yards and the 8-yard score to Virgil before getting replaced by Mitch Griffis late in the first half. Morton is playing through a leg injury, and original backup Will Hammond is out for the season with a knee injury. UCF's first points came on a safety when Texas Tech left tackle Howard Sampson was called for holding in the end zone. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

  11/10/25 - Austin RomaineJr/2027, Texas Tech, 6-2, 245 (DS#12 ILB) + More +

Kansas State will be without leading tackler Austin Romaine for the remainder of the season after the All-Big 12 linebacker hurt his hand a couple of weeks ago and finally opted for surgery rather than to continue playing through the pain. Wildcats coach Chris Klieman announced Monday that "we decided to shelve him for the rest of the year."

The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Romaine has made 66 stops this season, despite playing with his left hand heavily wrapped in recent weeks. He made 11 stops and intercepted a pass in a loss to Texas Tech a couple of weeks ago. Romaine's injury is another massive blow to the Wildcats, who were ranked in the preseason Top 25 but have struggled to live up to expectations. They are just 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the Big 12 heading into Saturday's trip to Oklahoma State, which means they need to win at least two of their last three games to become eligible for a bowl game. They finish at No. 15 Utah on Nov. 22 and against Colorado at home the following week. - AP College Football

  11/09/25 - Jacob RodriguezrSr/2026, Texas Tech, 6-1, 233 (DS#2 ILB) + More +

Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez indicated he was somewhat coerced by teammates into striking a Heisman Trophy pose during another dominant defensive performance by the ninth-ranked Red Raiders. The 6-foot-1, 235-pounder with a distinctive mustache now copied by Texas Tech fans should at least be in the conversation for college football's highest individual honor. After Rodriguez had 14 tackles and two takeaways for the No. 8 Red Raiders in their 29-7 win over previously undefeated No. 7 BYU on Saturday, three-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes - who was at the game during the Kansas City Chiefs' bye week - posted on social media: "Get him to New York! @HeismanTrophy." For all the Air Raid offenses that have blown through Texas Tech in recent decades, including the one operated by Mahomes, who threw for 11,252 yards and 93 touchdowns from 2014 to 2016, no Texas Tech player has brought a Heisman Trophy back to the South Plains.

Now, the linebacker who began his college career as a quarterback at Virginia could make a strong bid. Rodriguez, the FBS leader with seven forced fumbles, had his third interception of the season in the third quarter when he reached out and tipped the ball to himself. He struck the pose after that play. "My guys, they wanted me to hit it. Just a rush of adrenaline," Rodriguez said of his pose. - AP College Football

  11/02/25 - Jacob RodriguezrSr/2026, Texas Tech, 6-1, 233 (DS#2 ILB) + More +

The Big 12 had two teams - BYU and Texas Tech - in the top 10 of the Associated Press Top 25 college football poll for the first time in two years Sunday, while Notre Dame was back in the top 10 after a two-month absence. Oklahoma and Texas made the biggest upward moves in this week's poll, rising seven spots to No. 11 and No. 13, respectively. The top seven teams were unchanged in the final poll before the College Football Playoff committee releases its first rankings Tuesday night to kick off the run-up to the CFP bracket release Dec. 7. No. 1 Ohio State, which pulled away in the second half to beat Penn State on Saturday, is at the top of the AP poll for a 10th straight week. Indiana, which scored 50-plus points against a Big Ten opponent for the third time while hammering Maryland, is No. 2 for a third straight week.

The Buckeyes and Hoosiers again were followed by Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, Oregon and Ole Miss. Losses by Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt and Miami shuffled the Nos. 8, 9 and 10 spots, now held by BYU, Texas Tech and Notre Dame. Miami's losses to two then-unranked opponents in three weeks have caused a 16-spot plummet, from No. 2 to No. 18. The distribution of first-place votes was the same as last week. Ohio State received 54, Indiana got 11 and Texas A&M one. The Buckeyes are in the Top 25 for a 90th straight poll, third most on the active list. Notre Dame is in a 50th straight time, fifth on the active list. Texas, meanwhile, made its 800th appearance in the poll, seventh all time. No. 8 BYU and No. 9 Texas Tech gave the Big 12 two teams in the top 10 for the first time since Oct. 29, 2023. The Cougars, who were idle, have their highest ranking of the season. The Red Raiders won at Kansas State and reentered the top 10 for the first time in three weeks. The two teams face each other this weekend. - AP College Football

  11/01/25 - Behren MortonrSr/2026, Texas Tech, 6-1, 206 (DS#14 QB) + More +

Behren Morton threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns in his return from an injury, J'Koby Williams ran for 135 yards and a score, and No. 13 Texas Tech romped past sloppy, mistake-prone Kansas State 43-20 on Saturday. Cameron Dickey also had a touchdown run for the Red Raiders (8-1, 5-1 Big 12), who forced five turnovers while snapping an eight-game losing streak against the Wildcats (4-5, 3-3) with their first win in Manhattan since the 2008 season. "That was a huge win," said Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire, who arrived for his postgame news conference wearing a T-shirt with a photo of former Kansas State linebacker-turned-Red Raiders athletic director Kirby Hocutt across the front of it. "This is no disrespect to K-State," McGuire said. "It's a tip of my hat to my AD who played linebacker here, and it's been a long time since we beat Kansas State...I know it was a big win for him and a huge win for this team." Texas Tech is off to its best start in conference play since that year, when Mike Leach guided the team to the Cotton Bowl. "Winning the turnover battle is a huge thing for us," said Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, the preseason Big 12 defensive player of the year, who forced two of the fumbles.

"And we knew we had to do that to win." Avery Johnson threw for 199 yards and a touchdown while running for 86 and two more scores. But Kansas State's quarterback also threw two interceptions and was responsible for a late fumble that Texas Tech returned for a touchdown. Along with the slew of turnovers, the Wildcats also were 0 for 4 on fourth down. "I thought our guys battled on defense," Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said. "We just didn't have enough." Morton, who had been out of the lineup with a leg injury, opened the game with an interception of his own. But Johnson threw a pick right back, and it was the beginning of a messy first half in which both failed on fourth down, Kansas State lost a fumble and Texas Tech nearly did the same. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

  10/28/25 - Will HammondrFr/2029, Texas Tech, 6-2, 210 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Texas Tech backup quarterback Will Hammond is out for the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee in the No. 13 Red Raiders' 42-0 victory over Oklahoma State. The injury came in Hammond's second start filling in for Behren Morton, who is expected to return when Texas Tech (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) visits Kansas State on Saturday. coach Joey McGuire said Monday he is optimistic that Hammond will return next season, although he probably won't be part of spring practice.

Morton is a senior, so the Red Raiders will have a new starter in 2026. "If it's gonna be somebody that's going to be totally dedicated to getting back and attack the situation, there's nobody that attacks anything like Will Hammond," McGuire said. "Feel real confident that he'll have himself ready to go." Hammond's injury elevates Mitch Griffis to the backup job. Griffis was out of football last year after appearing in nine games in 2023 at Wake Forest. Griffis threw for a touchdown and ran for a score after Hammond exited the Oklahoma State game. Morton injured a knee in a 67-7 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the opener and re-aggravated the injury in a 41-17 win over Kansas on Oct. 11. Morton also was knocked out of the 34-10 win at Utah after taking a hit to the helmet. - AP College Football

  10/25/25 - Brendan SorsbyrJr/2027, Texas Tech, 6-3, 235 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Brendan Sorsby threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score to help No. 21 Cincinnati beat Baylor 41-20 on Saturday. The Bearcats (7-1, 5-0 Big 12) have won seven straight for the first time since 2021 when they reached the College Football Playoff. Baylor (4-4, 2-3) trailed 24-0 late in the first half, then cut it to 27-20 early in the fourth quarter behind two touchdown passes and a rushing TD by Sawyer Robertson. Sorsby's 23-yard TD run capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took more than seven minutes to make it 34-20 with six minutes left. It was Sorsby's fourth TD run of 20 or more yards this season. Cincinnati started fast again Saturday.

The Bears got a third-down stop on the Bearcats' first possession, but a pass-interference penalty gave Cincinnati a first down. A 1-yard touchdown run by Tawee Walker capped an 81-yard drive to put the Bearcats ahead 7-0. After a sack on third down resulted in a Baylor punt, Cincinnati drove 66 yards in 10 plays and Evan Pryor's 5-yard TD run made the score 14-0. Josh Cameron's catch and fumble for the game's first turnover led to Sorsby's 6-yard TD pass to Cyrus Allen that made it 24-0 with 2:34 left in the half. - Cincinnati/AP College Football

  10/25/25 - JKoby WilliamsSo/2028, Texas Tech, 5-10, 185 (DS#17 RB) + More +

J'Koby Williams returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and took a short pass 26 yards for a score on Texas Tech's first play, jump-starting the No. 14 Red Raiders' 42-0 victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday. Jacob Rodriguez returned a fumble 69 yards for a TD as Texas Tech (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) bounced back from its first loss, a 26-22 defeat at 24th-ranked Arizona State that dropped the Red Raiders out of the top 10. It was Texas Tech's first home Big 12 shutout since beating Baylor 28-0 in 2005. After lightning delayed the start for 30 minutes, Williams' return came on the first kickoff since school officials banned the yearslong tradition of fans throwing tortillas on kickoffs. The Red Raiders were penalized twice on kickoffs in their previous home game for objects thrown on the field in violation of a rule the Big 12 approved in August.

Texas Tech blocked a punt on the first possession for the Cowboys (1-7, 0-5), leading to Williams' TD on a screen from Will Hammond, who started a second consecutive game in place of the injured Behren Morton. Third-stringer Mitch Griffis replaced Hammond in the second quarter after Hammond appeared to injure his lower right leg on a run. Morton changed from street clothes to his uniform at halftime but only had to watch as Griffis threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score in the third quarter. Oklahoma State was limited to 182 yards in a seventh consecutive loss since beating lower-division Tennessee-Martin in the opener. The Cowboys have three shutout losses of at least 42 points since 2022. Rodriguez's 11th career fumble recovery - second among active FBS players - never touched the ground. The senior linebacker ripped the ball out of the arms of Sesi Vailahi in the middle of the line of scrimmage and ran untouched for the score. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

  10/25/25 - Will HammondrFr/2029, Texas Tech, 6-2, 210 (DS#12 QB) + More +

Will Hammond exited No. 14 Texas Tech's game against Oklahoma State on Saturday with an apparent injury, prompting injured starting quarterback Behren Morton to change from street clothes to his uniform at halftime in case he was needed to finish the game. Morton was still on the sideline when third-stringer Mitch Griffis threw for a touchdown and ran for score in the third quarter to push the Red Raiders' lead to 42-0. Hammond appeared in injure his lower right leg on a run in the second quarter. There was no announcement from Texas Tech.

It was the second consecutive start for Hammond in place of Morton, who re-injured his right knee in a victory over Kansas on Oct. 11. Hammond started Texas Tech's first loss, 26-22 at No. 24 Arizona State last week. Hammond had a 26-yard touchdown pass to J'Koby Williams on a screen. Griffis' first play was a 3-yard loss on a fourth-and-1 keeper, but he threw a 42-yard TD pass to Caleb Douglas on Texas Tech's first possession of the second half. Griffis' 1-yard scoring run came late in the third quarter. - AP College Football

  10/19/25 - Brendan SorsbyrJr/2027, Texas Tech, 6-3, 235 (DS#2 QB) + More +

Brendan Sorsby threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score and No. 24 Cincinnati took control late and beat Oklahoma State 49-17 on Saturday night for its sixth straight victory. Sorsby completed 20 of 29 passes for 270 yards and Cyrus Allen caught two touchdown passes and ran for a score for Cincinnati (6-1, 4-0 Big 12). They paced an offense that gained 427 yards. Matthew McDoom returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter - the longest interception return in school history - to help the Bearcats become bowl eligible for the first time in coach Scott Satterfield's three years at Cincinnati. "Congratulations men," Satterfield told the team in the locker room. "We're going bowling, baby!" The Bearcats are positioned to do much more than merely go to a bowl game. Cincinnati and BYU are the only remaining unbeaten teams in league play after Arizona State's win over previously unbeaten Texas Tech on Saturday. "But we want to go to one of them good bowls, so we've got to keep winning, right?" Satterfield said to the team. "We've got to keep this thing going." Rodney Fields Jr. ran for a career-high 163 yards and caught three passes for 27 yards for the Cowboys (1-6, 0-4). An energetic crowd that showed up despite the team's struggles couldn't save Oklahoma State from its sixth straight defeat.

It was the Cowboys' fourth straight loss since firing coach Mike Gundy, and all have been by double digits. "Just some little minor miscues that turned catastrophic, you know what I mean," Oklahoma State interim coach Doug Meacham said. "It's like a little bitty thing that just completely implodes on us." Sorsby threw all three of his touchdown passes in the first half to help Cincinnati take a 28-10 lead. The Bearcats scored four touchdowns on four possessions in the first half. Fields broke loose for a 20-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 28-17 before Cincinnati took charge. - Cincinnati/AP College Football

In its third season in the Big 12, Cincinnati has the look of a Power Five program on and off the field. The No. 24 Bearcats are on a five-game winning streak and ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time in nearly three years. Besides the 5-1 record, they are tied with No. 7 Texas Tech and 15th-ranked BYU atop the conference at 3-0. "I think we've played well all year. The key was bringing back the core nucleus of our team last year and adding a few pieces. It's been a good gel, good mesh. The challenge is to keep doing that," coach Scott Satterfield said in his office overlooking the field at the Sheakley Indoor Practice Facility and Performance Center. The football program moved into the $134 million building in June.

It has been a steady climb for Cincinnati, which was the first non-Power Five team to make the College Football Playoff in 2021. Before this week, the last time the Bearcats were ranked was when it was No. 21 on Nov. 20, 2022. The Bearcats joined the Big 12 in 2023 and went 3-9 and 1-8 in conference play. They started 5-2 last season before ending the year on a five-game losing streak. A win at Oklahoma State Saturday night would not surpass UC's conference wins from last year; it would make them bowl eligible for the first time since 2022. Rebuilding jobs have become Satterfield's forte. He helped guide Appalachian State from the Football Championship Subdivision to FBS and then went to Louisville after struggles in the Atlantic Coast Conference. - AP College Football

The Big 12 has hit the midpoint of its season with a pair of 6-0 teams, and in many ways it is no surprise that No. 7 Texas Tech and No. 15 BYU are in that position. No. 24 Cincinnati is the only other Big 12 team to win its first three conference games, making the Bearcats (5-1, 3-0 Big 12) an easy choice as the most surprising team by AP writers who cover the league. With efficient quarterback Brendan Sorsby and linebacker Jake Golday, the Big 12's leading tackler at 9.3 per game, Cincinnati has a five-game winning streak since opening coach Scott Satterfield's third season with a loss to Nebraska. They have already matched last year's win total. Sorsby ranks third in the Big 12 at 295.8 total yards per game, behind only Baylor's Sawyer Robertson and TCU's Josh Hoover, who are 1-2 nationally in passing yards and TDs. Sorsby has thrown for 1,448 yards and 14 touchdowns with only one interception, and run for another 327 yards and five scores. - AP College Football
