  KJ Cooper threw two touchdown passes to Kerien Charlo, and Jonathan Lewis rushed for two touchdowns as Texas Southern routed NCCAA-member Virginia Lynchburg 61-10 on Saturday. Texas Southern (4-3) secured its first four-game winning streak since 2014. Texas Southern forced four turnovers for the second straight game and limited Virginia Lynchburg to 11 first downs and 87 total yards. Jaquavus Hallman made two interceptions, including a 40-yard pick-6 with 29 seconds left before halftime for a 37-3 lead.

Charlo had a 69-yard touchdown in the second quarter and Chaunzavia Lewis added a 100-yard kickoff return in the third. Lewis gained 92 yards on just 11 carries and Athean Renfro added a team-high 94 yards rushing and a touchdown for Texas Southern. Charlo caught four passes for 102 yards. Renfro has rushed for 474 yards over the past four games on 81 carries. Nico Cleaves was 11 of 31 for 100 yards passing with one touchdown and three interceptions for Virginia Lynchburg, which restarted its football program in 2011 after stopping play in 1954. - AP College Football

  KJ Cooper threw a touchdown pass and ran for a 1-yard TD, Athean Renfro ran for 152 yards, including a 60-yard score, and Texas Southern beat Grambling 21-20 on Saturday night. Cooper was 11-of-20 passing for 89 yards with a 7-yard TD pass to Xavier Phipps. Jacob Washington had 69 yards rushing on 11 carries for Texas Southern (2-3, 2-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference).

Jay'Shuan Johnson returned the opening kickoff of the second half 95 yards for a touchdown that gave Grambling (3-3, 0-2) a 20-14 lead but, after Chaunzavia Lewis returned the ensuing kick 38 yards to midfield, Cooper capped a six-play, 50-yard drive with his TD run that gave Texas Southern the lead for good. Aston Frye opened the scoring with a 15-yard TD run and Byron Eaton Jr. added a 1-yard touchdown run just before halftime that cut Grambling's deficit to 14-13. - AP College Football

  Athean Renfro ran five yards for the winning touchdown for Texas Southern with 1:18 left in the game, lifting the Tigers to a 23-20 comeback win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday night. Texas Southern recovered a fumble with 6:27 to play. On a 4th and 4, Tigers quarterback KJ Cooper threw the ball as he was being tackled, but the officials determined his knee was down before the throw. Mississippi Valley took over on downs, up 20-16, with 3:25 to play but the Delta Devils were stopped at midfield.

Cooper and the Tigers' offense took over with just under two minutes to play. He threw a deep ball to Trenton Leary for a 48-yard completion to the 5-yard line. Renfro ran the ball in to make it 23-20 with 1:18 to play. Renfro finished the day with 80 yards on 21 carries. Cooper went 13-for-20 passing with 165 yards. Mississippi Valley quarterback Josh Brown threw for 252 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass to Kerrick Ross in the second quarter. Texas Southern (1-3, 1-1 SWAC) is 8-5 all-time against Mississippi Valley State (0-4, 0-1 SWAC). The Tigers' last win against the Delta Devils was in 2018. - AP College Football

  2022 PRESEASON ALL-SWAC FIRST TEAM: Offensive Lineman: Drake Centers, Texas Southern,...Centers, who became the first TSU lineman to earn All-SWAC honors since 2010 last year, displayed his versatility with the ability to step into both tackle spots last season. Centers, a native of Tatum, Texas, also helped anchor an offensive line which helped TSU finish with 4,293 yards of offense while also playing a huge role in helping TSU protect the quarterback as the line ranked fourth in the SWAC in sacks against which marked a huge improvement in that category from the last time TSU played a full season in 2019.
