Trey Sanders will become the third Alabama player since the end of the regular season to transfer to TCU. Sanders announced on Instagram he has committed to play for the Horned Frogs after entering the NCAA transfer portal in late November. Sanders - a redshirt junior from Port St. Joe, Florida - joins wide receiver JoJo Earle and offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer, both Fort Worth-area natives, in transferring to TCU this offseason. They will not be eligible to play in the Horned Frogs' national championship game against Georgia next week.

A five-star recruit to Alabama in 2019, Sanders missed his freshman season because of a foot injury and had his 2020 season ended by injuries sustained in a car accident, including a broken pelvis. He returned to score a touchdown in the 2021 season opener but played a minimal role on offense the past two seasons, contributing mostly on special teams. - Birmingham News

Max Duggan accounted for four touchdowns, TCU returned two interceptions for scores and the third-ranked Horned Frogs withstood a frenetic second-half surge by No. 2 Michigan to win the Fiesta Bowl 51-45 on Saturday night and advance to the College Football Playoff national championship. TCU (13-1), the most unlikely team ever reach the four-team playoff in its nine-year history, has one more game left in its improbable season and it will come against either No. 1 Georgia or No. 4 Ohio State on Jan. 9 at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Coming off a losing 2021 season and picked to finish seventh in the Big 12 in Sonny Dykes' first year as coach, the Horned Frogs will try to win the program's first national championship since 1938. Duggan and the Frogs will no doubt be underdogs - again. That didn't matter much against Michigan (13-1) as they took it to the big, bad Big Ten champions and turned the Fiesta Bowl into circa-2010, Big 12-style scorefest. It was the highest scoring Fiesta Bowl ever and the second-highest scoring CFP game behind Georgia’s 54-48 Rose Bowl victory against Oklahoma on Jan. 1, 2018. Maybe it was fitting.

TCU, the little private school from Forth Worth, Texas, that was left out of the Big 12 when it first formed in the mid-1990s, became the first team from the conference to win a CFP game and will be the first to play for a national title since Texas in 2009. This one was 34-16 with 2:46 left in the third quarter and the Hypnotoads, a nickname borrowed for the animated TV show “Futurama,” and their purple-clad fans could sense their wild ride wasn't over. Of course, nothing has come easy for these Frogs all year. During their unbeaten regular season, they won seven straight games by 10 points or fewer. What followed was five touchdown drives - with a TCU turnover tucked in between - each taking less than a minute. Duggan threw for 225 yards and two interceptions and ran for 57. Johnston had six catches for 163 yards and Emari Demercado, picking up the slack for an injured Kendre Miller, ran for 150. TCU quarterback Max Duggan acknowledged on Tuesday that his decision to enter the 2023 NFL Draft on Sunday was hard, but he felt it was the right one for him. "I thought about it for awhile," Duggan said. "I talked to all the coaches, my family and a lot of other people. I didn't really have a dog in the fight." It's understandable for Duggan to have been so torn, considering how proudly he has talked about his love and affection for TCU and Fort Worth as a whole.

But as he continued to think on the decision, he couldn't deny his dream of making it to the NFL. "It was a tough decision, it was hard, it was not easy," Duggan said. "But I just thought it was something I always wanted to do, something I was ready for and it just kind of time." Duggan had the option of running it back another year under Sonny Dykes and improve his draft stock even more, but ultimately he made the right decision. After seizing the moment to become the starting quarterback after an injury to Chandler Morris in the season opener, Duggan pushed himself up draft boards with one of the best individual seasons in TCU history. Duggan was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy and won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's top quarterback. Alabama transfer offensive lineman Tommy Brockermeyer is returning home. The former All Saints' Episcopal star announced he was transferring to TCU on Tuesday. Brockermeyer was a five-star recruit in the Class of 2021 and is the fourth SEC transfer the Horned Frogs have landed in the last week. His teammate JoJo Earle announced his transfer to TCU on Saturday. Florida cornerback Avery Helm and LSU wide receiver Jack Bech also committed to TCU out of the transfer portal this weekend. Brockermeyer saw limited snaps in two seasons with the Crimson Tide, but is still rated a four-star transfer prospect by 247Sports. His father Blake is also a Fort Worth native and was an All-American offensive lineman at Texas. Blake Brockermeyer played nine seasons in the NFL. - Fort Worth Star

TCU quarterback and Heisman Trophy runner-up Max Duggan will skip his available extra season with the third-ranked Horned Frogs and make himself eligible for the NFL draft after the College Football Playoff. Duggan has started 41 games during his four seasons at TCU, though the senior could have returned for another season because all players were granted an extra year of eligibility after the 2020 season was altered by the pandemic. When announcing his decision on social media that he was declaring for the NFL draft, Duggan wrote, "But first, we still have business to take care of." The Frogs (12-1), who play Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal on Dec. 31, were undefeated until their overtime loss to Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game. Duggan has thrown for 3,321 yards with 30 touchdowns and four interceptions this season, and also has 404 yards rushing with six more scores. He finished second in the Heisman voting behind Caleb Williams.

Duggan lost his starting job going into the season, but took over in the second half of the opener after Chandler Morris injured his knee. In his post Sunday, Duggan said being a student-athlete at TCU has been the greatest experience of his life, helping him develop as a football player and a man while earning a business degree. The Iowa native also thanked his family, teammate, coaches and fans for their support. "My experience at TCU and, in turn, Amon G. Carter Stadium, has been filled with great memories, passion and pride," Duggan wrote. "I have learned many lessons through the highs and the lows.
