Former Minnesota coach Jerry Kill has joined TCU's staff as a special assistant to coach Gary Patterson. The two Kansas natives are longtime friends, and Kill was the best man in Patterson's wedding. Kill will be in charge of the Horned Frogs offense, but won't be one of the on-field assistant coaches. He was in a similar role at Virginia Tech last season. TCU also said Wednesday that Bryan Applewhite is the new running backs coach and that Doug Meacham, the Frogs co-offensive coordinator from 2014-16, has returned to be the inside receivers/tight ends coach.

Kill was Minnesota's coach from 2011-15 before seizures caused by his epilepsy forced him to step down. He worked as an associate athletic director at Kansas State in 2016 before being the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks at Rutgers in 2017. He retired from on-field coaching after that season. In 22 seasons as a head coach at five different schools, Kill had a 152-99 record. He was 29-29 at Minnesota, and led the Golden Gophers to three consecutive bowl games after previously coaching at Northern Illinois, Southern Illinois, Emporia State and Saginaw Valley State. - AP College Football

Rocky Long is returning to New Mexico as defensive coordinator after recently retiring from San Diego State, where he coached the Aztecs to nine straight bowl games. New Mexico head coach Danny Gonzales praised Long on Monday, expressing excitement about the program's winningest coach returning to his alma mater. "Coach Long's teams at both UNM and San Diego State were known for their defense, and I don't think there is a better defensive coach in the country. We are lucky to have him back with our program," Gonzales said in a statement. Gonzales and Long also have a long history, as Gonzales played his senior season at New Mexico under Long and later served as defensive coordinator during Long's tenure at San Diego State. Long was a quarterback at New Mexico from 1969-71, earning player of the year honors for the Western Athletic Conference in 1971. He then played professionally in both Canada and with the Detroit Wheels of the short-lived World Football League. - AP College Football

The TCU Horned Frogs are losing one of their most talented defensive players as junior tackle Ross Blacklock has declared for the 2020 NFL draft. Blacklock announced his decision to declare for the draft on his Instagram with a post thanking the TCU coaching staff. Blacklock was a freshman All-American in 2017 before suffering an injury that sidelined him for his sophomore year in 2018. As a junior, he returned to post 40 tackles and 3.5 sacks, and was the primary pass rusher for the Horned Frogs. Blacklock was selected as a captain for several games in 2019, including the final four games of the season. He was named a First Team All-Big 12 member this season and was an honorable mention for Defensive Lineman of the Year in the conference. With Blacklock's departure, TCU now has a major hole to fill on the defensive line. Corey Bethley will likely keep his starting role at one defensive tackle position, leaving a battle for Blacklock's spot that will likely have rising junior Terrell Cooper as the favorite. Cooper, listed at 6-2, 286 pounds, started six games as a redshirt freshman in 2018. - The Dallas Morning News
