  04/29/20 - Lucas NiangSr/2020, Texas Christian, 6-6, 315 (DS#10 OT) + More +

When people look back on the 2020 NFL Draft, TCU coach Gary Patterson believes offensive tackle Lucas Niang will look like a steal. The Kansas City Chiefs landed Niang with a third-round pick (96th overall) last Friday. "I'll be honest with you, if Lucas Niang stays healthy, I think he was a steal," Patterson said. Niang, 6-foot-6, 315 pounds, didn't allow a sack in his college career (1,027 career pass-block snaps). He played right tackle for TCU, but feels he has the versatility to play on the left side at the next level if needed.

Niang was regarded as one of the top offensive tackle prospects much of the season, but had his senior season cut short with an injury. He was limited to seven games in 2019, undergoing season-ending hip surgery in November. Reports suggest he is making good progress from his hip surgery and Patterson believes Niang has a promising future.. "The guy is huge," Patterson said. "A very powerful run blocker. More powerful than the guys that have gone out the last few years. He's a smart player. The biggest thing is he needs to stay healthy. If he can stay healthy, his ceiling is very high." - Fort Worth Star

  04/29/20 - Max DugganSr/2023, Texas Christian, 6-2, 207 (DS#13 QB) + More +

TCU coach Gary Patterson isn't worried about what NFL analysts thought about quarterback Max Duggan or the offensive struggles last season. The Horned Frogs' offense has been scrutinized in recent weeks as professional teams evaluated receiver Jalen Reagor. Reagor's limited production was written off by some NFL teams based on Duggan's play. "[Reagor] played with possibly one of the worst college football quarterbacks I've ever seen in my life," an NFC coordinator told NFL.com. Said another coordinator in the same report: "The Reagor kid is interesting because his quarterback play was so atrocious."

Patterson was aware of the criticisms during the NFL Draft last week, recalling: "I heard Kirk Herbstreit say that [Duggan] was terrible and the offense was terrible. It's easy to say that." The criticism is fair to an extent. TCU had the Big 12's second-worst pass offense and worst pass efficiency rating. Duggan completed only 53.4% of his passes, throwing for 2,077 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. On the flip side, Duggan was only a true freshman and played more than most expected. He flashed promising signs, too, such as his play in victories over Texas and Texas Tech. Just about every Big 12 coach, from Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley to Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, had good things to say about Duggan throughout the season. "He's an impressive kid, man," Riley said last season. "He's athletic, an aggressive runner and he's got a really good guy [TCU offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie] coaching him, so you know he's going to get better quickly like he has." - Fort Worth Star

  04/23/20 - Jeff GladneyrSr/2020, Texas Christian, 5-10, 191 (DS#9 CB) + More +

Jeff Gladney waited until the 31st pick for his phone to ring Thursday night. When his phone did buzz, it was the team the cornerback wanted to hear from on the other line. The Vikings tabbed the former TCU standout in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, using their second selection on Day 1 to bolster a position that was an area of need for Minnesota. "I had talked to them a few times in the draft process … I never lost faith in [the Vikings]," Gladney said. "I thought they were going to draft me, and they did."

Vikings Head Coach Mike Zimmer shared an anecdote from Thursday's call with Gladney, a First-Team All-Big 12 selection with the Horned Frogs who is happy to stay in purple. "When we called him — [college scout] Pat [Roberts] gets him on the phone — and he said, 'I've been waiting for you guys to call.' That's part of what you like about him," Zimmer said. "He's a competitor and he wants to get out there and go." Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman said Gladney "has tremendous upside." - Vikings.com

  04/23/20 - *Jalen ReagorJr/2020, Texas Christian, 5-11, 206 (DS#6 WR) + More +

The Eagles selected wide receiver Jalen Reagor out of TCU with the No. 21 overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The son of former Eagles defensive tackle Montae Reagor, who had a nine-year NFL career, Jalen is a two-time All-Big 12 selection. In his TCU career, he caught 148 receptions for 2,248 yards and 22 touchdowns in 39 games (25 starts). He finished No. 2 on TCU's all-time list in receiving touchdowns and sixth in receiving yards in just three seasons. A true junior, the 5-11, 206-pound Reagor just turned 21 years old in January. A track star in high school, Reagor has enough speed running a 4.47 in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. Where does he fit in the offense? He can line up on the outside, as a motion receiver, and in the slot. He can be utilized on jet sweeps and orbit motions. He can take the top off a defense and generate yards after the catch. - PhiladelphiaEagles.com

  04/20/20 - Innis GainesSr/2020, Texas Christian, 6-1, 203 (DS#80 SS) + More +

TCU's Innis Gaines views himself as a "hybrid playmaker" in the NFL. He feels he can line up at every spot in the secondary. "I can make plays from anywhere," Gaines said. "I can play outside corner, nickel, strong safety, deep safety … I just like being by the ball. Wherever the ball is, I'm trying to get there." Gaines spent his college career at safety, making his presence felt when healthy. In the NFL, though, he could be an intriguing cornerback prospect. At 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Gaines would be a taller, lengthier corner that some teams covet these days. And it's a transition that's been done before.

Former Oklahoma State safety Tre Flowers, for instance, is now a cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks. Gaines could follow a similar route as NFL teams have discussed that scenario with TCU safeties coach Paul Gonzales. "A couple teams have asked about him at corner. They like the length and the ball skills that he has," Gonzales said. "He's very athletic and has a great skill set. And he's got a high football IQ. He's very instinctive, he has a knack for making plays and those things come out when you talk to him." Gaines wouldn't be a complete stranger at cornerback, either. He occasionally lined up at corner in practice to test his skills against Jalen Reagor, and even did it a few times in a game during the 2018 season when he covered Iowa State (and now Arizona Cardinals) receiver Hakeem Butler. Gaines held his own against Butler in that Iowa State game, although most will remember his strip-sack that led to a 47-yard touchdown return by defensive end Ben Banogu. - Fort Worth Star

Cordel Iwuagwu took a few reps at center last spring, the only time he spent at that position in his five years at TCU. The Horned Frogs used him primarily at guard during his career. But Iwuagwu has spent this off-season working at center as another avenue for an NFL career. He wants to show teams that he is a versatile player capable of playing any of the interior line positions, something that will open more doors. Unfortunately for Iwuagwu, TCU's pro day was called off amid the coronavirus pandemic and he's yet to get a chance to showcase that ability in front of NFL evaluators. "I was definitely looking forward to pro day, man," Iwuagwu said. "I wanted to show everybody some O-line drills, some bags and also that I could play some center. I can snap the ball and do whatever is needed after I snap it. I've been working on that for the past couple of months."

The good news for Iwuagwu is that he's expected to get that chance at some point. He's projected as a late-round prospect, or priority free agent, going into next week's NFL Draft as analysts like how he "competes with an edge." Iwuagwu made a favorable impression last season with the Horned Frogs, starting all 12 games at left guard and earning All-Big 12 honorable mention. It was a nice rebound season for Iwuagwu, who missed eight games in 2018 with a high ankle sprain. - Fort Worth Star

The Red-White Spring Game isn't happening on Saturday, but maybe you can still find at least a little bit of a football fix. Nebraska on Monday morning announced that it will be streaming a video game simulation of the Spring Game on its social media channels, featuring rosters made up of program legends, according to a school news release. The simulation will also have radio broadcast worked into it and is set to be live-streamed at 1 p.m. Saturday on Facebook, Twitter and Twitch. "Especially with the lack of spring practice and no spring game, we really want our fans to still feel connected," senior associate athletic director Garrett Klassy told the Journal Star late last week. NU had sold more than 62,000 tickets for its Red-White Spring Game before the coronavirus pandemic forced its cancellation. The Huskers missed out on 13 of 15 planned spring practices, including the Spring Game, which was set to be the finale. - Lincoln Journal Star

  04/10/20 - *Jalen ReagorJr/2020, Texas Christian, 5-11, 206 (DS#6 WR) + More +

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has known what type of game-changing player TCU's Jalen Reagor has been for years. Jones remembers Reagor's highlight-reel play on a 73-yard touchdown run in high school when Waxahachie took on Highland Park in 2016. That's one of the first things Jones mentioned when the Dallas Cowboys held a virtual interview with Reagor on Thursday. Those electric plays continued for Reagor during his college career at TCU. Nobody will soon forget his remarkable TD run on a jail-break screen at Baylor in 2018, or his 73-yard punt return for a TD against Kansas last season after dropping the ball.

With that being said, it's no surprise to see Reagor on the Cowboys' draft radar as teams are always seeking playmakers on offense. And Reagor fits that label as well as anyone. Along with Jones, other notable Cowboys personnel on the call with Reagor included executive vice president Stephen Jones, vice president of player personnel Will McClay, head coach Mike McCarthy, offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, special-teams coordinator John Fassel and area scout Sam Garza. Fassel asked Reagor about a favorite return man growing up. "Devin Hester," Reagor said, "Because I watched him do it in the Super Bowl against my dad." Speaking of his father's influence, Jalen told the Cowboys' brass: "If you plan on having a long career, you've got to do things the right way. My dad did things the right way. That's why he played in the league for nine years. If you're there for a long time, you're doing something right." Reagor is viewed as a possible first-round talent and the Cowboys have the 17th overall pick. It's unlikely Reagor would be available for the Cowboys when they pick in the second round (51st overall). - Fort Worth Star

TCU's Jalen Reagor is among the prospects who will be participating in the NFL Draft virtually later this month. Reagor received an invitation to take part in some sort of digital form as he watches the draft with close family and friends at his grandma's home in Waxahachie. The NFL Draft remains scheduled to take place and be televised April 23-25, but public events in Las Vegas have been canceled amid the coronavirus pandemic. The NFL is incorporating top prospects such as Reagor to be part of the coverage remotely. More than 50 players are expected to be present via video and social media. TCU defensive tackle Ross Blacklock and cornerback Jeff Gladney are other highly-touted players who could participate virtually. - Fort Worth Star

  03/25/20 - Vernon ScottSr/2020, Texas Christian, 6-1, 206 (DS#33 FS) + More +

TCU safety Vernon Scott had been preparing for pro day. He wanted NFL executives and scouts to get a firsthand look at how he tested and his athleticism. But pro days across the country have been canceled amid the coronavirus pandemic with the NFL prohibiting teams from traveling to different sites across the country. That is devastating news to a number of aspiring pro prospects. But not Scott, who believes teams will have a favorable impression when they study his film closer. "With pro days canceled, teams will go back and watch film," Scott said. "They're going to draft players off film. I feel as a player on film, I have pretty good film."

Scott finished last season with 44 tackles, two tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and one interception. He returned his lone interception 98 yards for a pick-six touchdown in TCU's 28-24 loss at Oklahoma. More than anything, though, Scott feels he has shown versatility playing four years under coach Gary Patterson. He played weak safety mostly at TCU, but also has experience playing cornerback and other safety spots. Additionally, Scott has played special teams on the coverage units. "My film shows I'm very versatile," Scott said. "I feel I can do a lot of things." - Fort Worth Star

TCU is closing fan access to home athletics events until at least April 3, citing growing coronavirus concerns. All events will be open only to "essential personnel," the school announced. "Essential personnel are student-athletes, coaches, trainers, team and medical personnel, game officials, operational and administrative staff, student-athlete families, credentialed media and TCU recruits," the school said in a news release. Among the most notable event affected is TCU canceling its spring football scrimmage that had been scheduled for March 28 at Amon G. Carter Stadium. The university planned to unveil the east-side expansion that day, but it will now do so at a later date. - Fort Worth Star

  03/02/20 - JD SpielmanrSr/2022, Texas Christian, 5-09, 173 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Nebraska receiver JD Spielman has gone home to deal with an unspecified health matter and probably will miss all of spring practice. "Everyone's focus right now is on JD's well-being and providing him with the appropriate support," coach Scott Frost said Monday. "We anticipate JD returning to the team in time for summer conditioning." Spielman is from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and going into his senior year. He led the Cornhuskers with 49 catches for 898 yards and five touchdowns last season. He's the first Nebraska player with three 800-yard receiving seasons. Nebraska also announced kicker Barret Pickering and receiver Jaevon McQuitty are leaving football, and walk-on kicker Matt Waldoch has left the team to focus on academics. Pickering and McQuitty had been injured. Spring practice opens March 9. - AP College Football
