One of Auburn's backup wide receivers is set to leave the program. Zach Farrar, who joined the Tigers as a graduate transfer last year, entered the NCAA transfer portal Wednesday, AL.com has learned. The next school will be the fifth in five years for Farrar, who started his college career at Oklahoma in 2016 before spending 2017 at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, 2018 at Youngstown State and 2019 at Auburn. Farrar finished last season with just three catches. - Birmingham News

TCU will get help on defense as Flower Mound Marcus alum and former LSU linebacker Marcel Brooks is expected to join the team. A source confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Brooks is expected to enroll at TCU. Brooks was a 5-star prospect coming out of high school, according to 247Sports, ranked as the No. 2 outside linebacker and the No. 32 overall prospect in the 2019 class. He recorded eight tackles and 1.5 sacks in a backup role for LSU last season. He had one sack against Florida, and a half-sack against Texas A&M. Brooks, who entered the NCAA transfer portal in June, was expected to play a bigger role for the Tigers in 2020, but will now hope to do so for the Horned Frogs.

The 6-foot-2 defender will have to obtain an immediate eligibility waiver from the NCAA to play for the Horned Frogs next season. If not, he'll redshirt in 2020 and have three years of eligibility left starting in 2021. Brooks' exact position in Gary Patterson's 4-2-5 defense is not determined yet. He's a hybrid-type player who has the ability to play linebacker and safety, as well as a pass rusher. That's how gifted of an athlete Brooks is. - Fort Worth Star

Former LSU linebacker Marcel Brooks entered the transfer portal in late June, and he is now reportedly headed to TCU, according to 247Sports. The sophomore was expected to build on a 2019 season in which he showed flashes of his playmaking ability inside former defensive coordinator Dave Aranda's pass rush packages. Now, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound Brooks will return to his home state at the program that's near his home town in Fort Worth, Texas, where he attended Marcus High. Before Brooks entered the transfer portal, he was positioned to contribute as a diverse linebacker inside the 4-3 scheme under new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini. Brooks played in 11 games and recorded eight tackles and 1½ sacks, including a crucial sack against Florida that led toward the go-ahead touchdown in LSU's 42-28 win over the Gators in Tiger Stadium. - Baton Rouge Advocate

Another TCU football player has ended his playing days because of medical reasons. Reserve offensive lineman Ian Burnette has walked away from the game, multiple sources confirmed Monday. Backup quarterback Matthew Baldwin ended his career last week. Burnette, a three-star prospect out of Wimberley and part of TCU's 2018 recruiting class, never played in a game for the Horned Frogs. He redshirted as a true freshman in 2018, and sustained a season-ending injury last year. Burnette wasn't expected to compete for a starting job in 2020, but would have provided interior depth. Wes Harris and Quazzel White are two returners who started at guard last season. Others in the mix include John Lanz, Kellton Hollins and freshmen Garrett Hayes, Altrique Barlow and Brannon Brown. - Fort Worth Star

Sophomore linebacker Marcel Brooks entered the NCAA player transfer portal Friday, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Advocate, potentially removing one of LSU's most athletic players from the team. LSU expected Brooks, who showed flashes of potential last season, to contribute as a linebacker and help lead its pass rush. Brooks' decision was first reported by 247Sports. Reasons for the move are not yet known. Brooks had emerged as one of the most promising young players on LSU's defense, which switched to a 4-3 scheme under new defensive coordinator Bo Pelini. Last season, Brooks recorded eight tackles, 1½ tackles for loss and 1½ sacks.

All four of LSU's regular starting linebackers last year - K'Lavon Chaisson, Michael Divinity, Jacob Phillips and Patrick Queen - left for the NFL, making Brooks a possible successor after he moved to linebacker before spring practice. "As we all know, he's very fast," coach Ed Orgeron said in March, "and once he catches onto the scheme, I think he's going to be an excellent linebacker." Brooks, who's listed at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, arrived at LSU last year as a five-star recruit out of Marcus High in Flower Mound, Texas, where he played outside linebacker, safety and wide receiver. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  06/10/20 - JD SpielmanrSr/2022, Texas Christian, 5-09, 173 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Scott Frost weighed in on JD Spielman's transfer and his new-look wide receiver room Wednesday night on the "Husker Sports Nightly" radio program. Frost, the third-year Nebraska football coach, said he had been in contact with Spielman in the lead-up to the talented senior wide receiver's decision to transfer on Monday. "He's made a lot of plays at Nebraska and I wish him the best and I think everybody here hopes the best for him," Frost said. "...In talking to him, I think both parties were pretty sure that a fresh start and moving on was probably the right decision at this point."

In the wake of Spielman's departure, five of Nebraska's nine scholarship wide receivers will be newcomers in the 2020 recruiting class. "That's a position that we've been trying to rebuild and get right really since the first day that we stepped on to campus here and it's a position where we're going to need to be better," Frost said. "We certainly have some veterans we think can help us, but we're going to be reliant on a bunch of new players." Nebraska's incoming class of receivers features juco transfer Omar Manning, who arrived on campus last week, and freshmen Alante Brown, Marcus Fleming, Will Nixon and Zavier Betts. - Lincoln Journal Star

  06/08/20 - JD SpielmanrSr/2022, Texas Christian, 5-09, 173 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Spielman is not a graduate transfer and already used a redshirt season in 2016, meaning he will need to obtain a waiver in order to play in 2020. There is at least some risk in trying to transfer because he is down to one year of eligibility remaining, meaning Spielman will either be granted a waiver to play or he will not play again in college football. The move is not fully unexpected, considering Spielman has been away from the team for more than three months. Coach Scott Frost after the 2019 regular season's conclusion said that he was looking forward to having Spielman back in the program in 2020, but then he left a couple of months later and now, formally, will look to play elsewhere.

Spielman's departure means Nebraska will have nine scholarship wide receivers on the roster in 2020 - assuming they don't add one more via transfer - and five of them will be newcomers. The Huskers are also down to 13 scholarship seniors remaining on the roster and they have 79 of 85 spots filled overall, according to the Journal Star's count. Spielman is the third player to transfer in recent weeks, joining freshman defensive back Henry Gray, who entered the portal last week and has since committed to Florida International, and quarterback Noah Vedral, who left NU in late April and subsequently signed with Rutgers. - Lincoln Journal Star

  06/08/20 - JD SpielmanrSr/2022, Texas Christian, 5-09, 173 (DS#999 WR) + More +

JD Spielman, one of the top receivers in Nebraska history, has entered his name in the transfer portal, the school said Monday. Spielman is the first player to put together three straight 800-yard receiving seasons for the Cornhuskers and leaves No. 3 in career receptions and yards. Nebraska coach Scott Frost announced March 3 that Spielman had returned to his hometown of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, to deal with an unspecified health matter and probably would miss all of spring practice. Frost had said he expected Spielman to be back for summer conditioning. Spielman, the son of Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman, would have been a senior in eligibility this fall. It was unclear if he's on track to graduate this summer, which would make him eligible immediately at his next school. Spielman led the Huskers with 49 catches for 898 yards and five touchdowns last season. - AP College Football

Nebraska senior-to-be JD Spielman, easily the team's leading receiver in 2019, hasn't been involved in those optional workouts and his status for the 2020 season remains uncertain. He has been away from the team since early March because of a personal health matter. "We continue to hope the best for him," Frost said. "We're anxious to have resolution on everything." Might Spielman be on hand Monday, or sometime soon? "I'd say it's unclear," Frost said. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Spielman, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, last season logged 898 receiving yards (18.3 per catch), becoming the first player in school history to amass three 800-yard receiving seasons in a career. - Lincoln Journal Star

TCU has sent at least one player to the Senior Bowl every year since 2015. That streak has a strong chance of staying in tact in 2021. Horned Frogs linebacker Garret Wallow is already generating early buzz from Senior Bowl officials going into next season. Jim Nagy, the bowl game' executive director, posted on social media Monday morning about Wallow. "TCU football had four players drafted in first three rounds in 2020 but one key returner the Senior Bowl can't wait to see is Big 12 leading tackler WLB Garret Wallow," Nagy posted on his Twitter account. "The converted safety stood out on junior tape with his instincts and closing burst."

Wallow had a standout junior season in 2019, leading the Big 12 with 125 tackles. Of those 125 tackles, 18 were for loss including 3.5 sacks. He also had one interception and two QB hurries. Wallow was named first-team All-Big 12 by the coaches and Associated Press, and was an honorable mention for All-Big 12 defensive player of the year. - Fort Worth Star

It may be hard for Van Zandt to make a name for himself, considering he's playing safety alongside stars Ar'Darius Washington and Trevon Moehrig. But Van Zandt, who also played linebacker as a sophomore before missing the last few games with an injury, is a tremendous athlete. At 6-1, 206 pounds, he's a bigger presence at safety than most. If offenses try to throw away from Moehrig and Washington, Van Zandt will be there to either pick off the pass or lay the wood on a receiver. Expect to hear his name called often next year. - Dallas Morning News

Darius Anderson is still confused days later. He has no idea why he went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. This is a guy who was a home run threat throughout his college career, including a record-setting 93-yard TD run against Ohio State in 2018. This is a guy who seemingly had a solid Senior Bowl showing, including a 75-yard TD reception on a wheel route. "I will be surprised the rest of my life," Anderson said. "It'll never make sense to me." Anderson paused briefly and repeated: "It'll never make sense."

Anderson didn't have to wait long to find a landing spot, though, with a number of teams showing interest. He opted to sign with the Dallas Cowboys, receiving $110,000 guaranteed ($10,000 signing bonus and $100,000 of his base salary). "I'm going to come in ready to compete," said Anderson, who had 2,418 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns in his college career. "I love competing. I'm not scared of competition. That's what fuels me. I'm looking forward to it." - Fort Worth Star

  05/01/20 - Vernon ScottSr/2020, Texas Christian, 6-1, 206 (DS#33 FS) + More +

Vernon Scott didn't start playing football until his junior year at Mansfield Summit. He gravitated more toward basketball and track. But, once Scott put on the pads, he fell in love with the game. He excelled at it too. Scott was ranked as the No. 11 safety in Texas by the time he finished high school by 247Sports and jumped at an opportunity to play at nearby TCU. With the Horned Frogs, Scott got on the field immediately as a special teams ace and played his way into a starting safety job last season. Now he's headed to the Green Bay Packers, taken in the seventh round of last week's NFL Draft. "What we do is we have a system set up that you can develop guys that are like Vernon," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "He'd been a track guy and now he's a guy whose best days are ahead of him. He's only going on his sixth year of playing football, period."

For Scott, that's what excites him most about starting his professional career. He has seen himself develop tremendously from his high school days to his college days, and believes that will continue in the NFL. "I've got a great ceiling," Scott said. "I've had great coaches at TCU and I'm sure I'm only going to get better with NFL-caliber coaching." Scott finished last season with 44 tackles, two tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and one interception in 10 starts. He returned his lone interception 98 yards for a pick-six touchdown in TCU's 28-24 loss at Oklahoma. - Fort Worth Star

  04/30/20 - Lucas NiangSr/2020, Texas Christian, 6-6, 315 (DS#10 OT) + More +

TCU coach Gary Patterson took great pride in seeing five players selected in the NFL draft last week, including multiple first-round picks for the first time since 1939. But Patterson also acknowledged the disappointment in finishing with a losing record with all that talent. The Horned Frogs went just 5-7 in 2019, missing bowl eligibility for just the third time in Patterson's 19 seasons. "From my standpoint, we were No. 1 in defense (in the Big 12), but we underachieved," Patterson said during a conference call with reporters Tuesday. Coach is as disappointed as anyone. How'd TCU football go 5-7 with 5 NFL draft picks? Coach is as disappointed as anyone.

There's a number of factors people can point to for the disappointing season: The Horned Frogs were just 1-6 in one-score games. They went through the expected growing pains of starting a true freshman quarterback in Max Duggan. And, the team battled injuries, including one of those NFL talents - right tackle Lucas Niang - missing the final five games. Duggan also battled a finger injury the final four games. The list goes on, but Patterson isn't big on excuses. However, he acknowledged the challenges of winning at this level with an inexperienced quarterback. "You look across the nation, look at who played with a true freshman quarterback, who had a great year? If they did, congratulations to them," Patterson said. "From our standpoint, we're disappointed. (In six of the seven losses), we had a chance to come down and score to tie or win. At the end of the day, we didn't. "It's my job and that's why we tweaked the things that we did." - Fort Worth Star
