Alabama sophomore running back Trey Sanders made his debut Saturday and touched the ball 10 times. On those touches, Sanders had a net loss of 1 yard for the game. That total was a combination of 1 yard gained on nine carries, as well as 2 yards lost on one catch. It was hardly the result Alabama fans were expecting in the long-awaited debut of Sanders, who missed all of his freshman season because of a foot injury. On Monday, coach Nick Saban added context to the performance. "We had a couple other offensive linemen in there," Saban said during his video news conference. "Trey didn't have a lot of opportunity, but at the same time, I think the experience will do him well." TCU would've preferred to keep Max Duggan on the sidelines the entire game Saturday, coach Gary Patterson revealed on Monday. Duggan had a limited number of practice reps going into the game after being diagnosed with a heart condition that sidelined him for an extended time during training camp. He only returned to practice two weeks ago. That's why Patterson and the offensive coaching staff didn't play Duggan earlier in the season-opening 37-34 loss to Iowa State. Several fans questioned the decision as Duggan had a better day statistically than starter Matthew Downing. "Max had been out almost a month and a half," Patterson said on the Big 12 teleconference Monday.

"People need to understand the procedure he went through and what he had to do. In fact, on the final drive his hands were cramping up even playing a half to play at the level you have to play. "It wasn't a plan. We thought if Matthew Downing did good, we'd protect Max Duggan for one more ball game. He gets back to where he was - he'd be in full strength and condition to be able to play a full ball game. We made the decision at halftime to at least give him two series to see how it turned out. It turned out well, so he stayed in the ball game." Patterson reiterated his belief that injuries shouldn't be the reason players lose their position. Vanderbilt started freshman Ken Seals at quarterback against No. 11 Texas A&M in the season opener Saturday. Seals became the eighth true freshman to start at quarterback for Vanderbilt since the NCAA changed first-year eligibility rules in 1972. The others include Kyle Shurmur (vs. Missouri 2015), Wade Freebeck (vs. UMass, 2014), David Wallace (vs. Alabama, 1998), Kenny Simon (vs. Alabama, 1993), Tim Richardson (at Ole Miss, 1985), John Gromos (at Iowa State, 1985) and Mike Wright (vs. Florida, 1975). Seven of the eight made their first start against an SEC team.

Seals won the job in a competition with three other new quarterbacks, including junior college transfers Danny Clark and Jeremy Moussa and freshman Mike Wright. Seals' his first college game was near his hometown of Azle, Texas. He was a three-star signee in the 2020 recruiting class after passing for 5,714 yards and 53 touchdowns at Weatherford (Texas) High School. TCU likes to have options. Last season, Duggan was known for his running ability, which was not discovered until the middle of the season. Duggan showed Saturday that he still has the ability to run despite being out for a big chunk of the preseason due to a heart condition. He ran the ball 10 times during the second half. He also showed his ability to put the ball right in the pocket for the receivers. He went 16-19 in the passing game for 241 yards and 3 touchdowns. The quarterbacks were not the only ones in the game that were a threat in multiple aspects. Both Taye Barber and Emari Demercado had significant plays in positions they are not used to playing. Dillon Gabriel threw for 408 yards and four touchdowns to help No. 13 Central Florida beat East Carolina 51-28 on Saturday to open its American Athletic Conference schedule. Jaylon Robinson and Marlon Williams each had huge games as Gabriel's top targets for the Knights (2-0, 1-0). Robinson had nine catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns, while Williams had a career-best 13 catches for 136 yards. Throw in Greg McCrae's short first-quarter scoring run to lead a productive ground game, and UCF finished with 632 yards with its fast-paced offense pushing the tempo to keep the pressure on.

The Knights had a penalty-filled start in the first quarter - including four false-start penalties while trying to get off their first offensive snap - before settling in and blowing the game open with a pair of touchdowns in the final 5 minutes before halftime. Holton Ahlers threw for 215 yards and three TDs for the Pirates (0-1, 0-1), who were making a delayed start to the season after coronavirus-related scheduling changes. Max Duggan has been cleared to practice and is available to play when TCU opens its season against Iowa State on Saturday. Coach Gary Patterson provided the news during the Big 12 football coaches teleconference on Monday. That does not necessarily mean Duggan will start, though, as Patterson said Matthew Downing has been getting the majority of reps with the first-team. Third-stinger Stephon Brown also has a package in the offense. "Like I said last week, I thought we'd be at full-go. Max has been back for almost two weeks," Patterson said. "Downing is here...Stephon...we have all three." Patterson stopped short of declaring a starter. "I don't know who's going to start," he said. "Downing has been the guy since we've gone. He's slung the ball really well. Right now, we have three quarterbacks. All of them have a part of the package in the game plan and we'll go forward with it." Duggan had been sidelined much of training camp with a lifelong heart condition discovered through enhanced COVID-19 testing protocols. Two defensive players were granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA, including former LSU linebacker Marcel Brooks and former New Mexico defensive end Dylan Horton. TCU is expected to start its season against Iowa State on Sept. 26 at Amon G. Carter Stadium. A non-conference opener against SMU next Friday has been called off amid a coronavirus outbreak among the Horned Frogs football team. Brooks is the headliner from Friday's developments. He's a former five-star recruit out of Flower Mound Marcus who has the ability to line up as a pass rusher, linebacker or safety. He recorded eight tackles and 1.5 sacks in a backup role for LSU last season. He had one sack against Florida, and a half-sack against Texas A&M. Horton, meanwhile, provides much-needed depth along the defensive line. As expected, wide receiver JD Spielman was granted his immediate eligibility request by the NCAA, sources told the Star-Telegram. Most believed the former Nebraska receiver would be granted the waiver since he joined the program this summer and it became official on Tuesday. TCU remains optimistic that LSU transfer Marcel Brooks will obtain a waiver as well. That decision is expected soon, possibly at some point next week. Coach Gary Patterson raved about Brooks' versatility as a defender last week, saying the former five-star prospect can play pass rusher, linebacker and even safety.

Spielman, meanwhile, brings a veteran presence to the wide receiver corps and is also an option to return punts. Spielman has earned preseason recognition, including being named to the Senior Bowl's Top 250. Patterson said Spielman had been "in and out" of practice in recent weeks, but "when he's out there, he's starting to learn. We just need him to get more reps." Spielman had three consecutive 800-yard receiving seasons for the Cornhuskers, leading the team with 49 catches for 898 yards and five touchdowns last season. AL.com has confirmed that the former Auburn wide receiver will join TCU as a walk-on, which was first reported by 247Sports. It will be a return home for the Keller, Tx. native. It will also be his fifth school in five years. After spending 2016 at Oklahoma, Farrar spent 2017 at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, 2018 at Youngstown State, 2019 at Auburn and is now enrolled at TCU. TCU quarterback Max Duggan isn't sulking about a recent diagnosis that has sidelined him indefinitely. Instead, Duggan is focused on recovering and returning to the football field as soon as possible, his father Jim Duggan told the Star-Telegram on Sunday. "Max is obviously disappointed by the recent developments," Jim Duggan said. "But he's also the kind of kid who has been raised not to feel sorry for himself. He's staying positive. I'm sure when he's given the green light, he'll probably snap his chin strap a little tighter and go to work with a major chip on his shoulder."

Jim Duggan went on to say doctors discovered a heart abnormality on his son during an evaluation with an EKG (electrocardiogram). As TCU coach Gary Patterson said in announcing the news late last week, Jim Duggan reiterated that Max has likely had this condition his entire life and it was not COVID-19 related. "He's been treated for it and is now in the recovery phase," Jim said. "It just went undetected. We're glad that it was found and we had the opportunity to correct it." - Fort Worth Star

TCU faces uncertainty at the quarterback position with the season opener against SMU just over three weeks away. Projected starter Max Duggan is sidelined with an undisclosed health condition, coach Gary Patterson said on a conference call with team beat reporters Thursday night. Duggan has not practiced much during fall camp and it doesn't sound promising for him to return soon. Duggan has had the undisclosed condition his entire life, Patterson said, but it wasn't discovered until recently with TCU ramping up its testing protocols amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"Because of all the things we had in place, Max has a condition that he's had his whole life and we caught it," Patterson said. "Right now he's in a good place and hopefully he'll be getting back some time during the season. "Right now we'll be going forward with the rest of the quarterbacks. It's a thing he was born with and I'm just glad we found it; I can say that." Patterson didn't venture into a possible timeline for Duggan's return. "I don't know, I'm not the doctor," he said. Duggan played in all 12 games last season, starting the final 10. He finished by going 181 for 339 passing for 2,077 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
