TCU football sustained another significant injury loss. Senior defensive tackle Corey Bethley didn't start Saturday's game at Baylor, and coach Gary Patterson revealed afterward that Bethley is likely done for the season. "I don't know if he will be back," Patterson said. It's unclear whether Bethley would return for the 2021 season. With the NCAA freezing eligibility this year, he would have the option to return to the Frogs next season. Bethley was the team's active leader in starts with 29. He has six tackles, including two for a loss and one sack, for the Frogs this season. Bethley also recovered the fumble in the final minutes to secure TCU's victory over Texas earlier this season. With Bethley sidelined, TCU's starting defensive tackles were Terrell Cooper and George Ellis. The D-line played well against Baylor most of the day. At one point in the second half, the Bears had minus-22 yards rushing. - Fort Worth Star

  10/31/20 - Derius DavisrSr/2023, Texas Christian, 5-08, 165 (DS#33 WR) + More +

Derius Davis returned a punt 67 yards for a touchdown, freshman Darwin Barlow ran for 117 yards with a touchdown and TCU built a big lead on way to a 33-23 win over Baylor on Saturday. Zach Evans, a true freshman who was TCU's first five-star signee, took an inside handoff for a 30-yard touchdown and his first collegiate touchdown. The Horned Frogs (2-3, 2-3 Big 12) jumped out to a 30-0 lead early in the second quarter. Their defense had five sacks, equaling their total of the first four games. Baylor (1-3, 1-3) played its first game in three weeks, following an open date and then the postponement of its home game against No. 6 Oklahoma State because of positive COVID-19 tests in the Bears program. That led to a weeklong pause of all football activity in their program. Davis fielded the ball, moved parallel to the left around blockers and then burst through a gap into the open near midfield about midway through the first quarter to make it 14-0. TCU then got the ball back when La'Kendrick Van Zandt got an interception when he jumped in front of tight end Ben Sims along the sideline and managed to keep a foot in bounds. - AP College Football

TCU senior tight end Artayvious Lynn announced that his season is over on social media Tuesday. "That wraps up my season," Lynn posted alongside a broken heart emoji. In a follow up tweet, Lynn vowed to come back from the undisclosed season-ending injury, writing: "I done dealt with Worse...I'm BUILT." Lynn is the latest injury setback for the Horned Frogs. Cornerback Noah Daniels and offensive lineman Wes Harris both sustained what are believed to be season-ending injuries in last week's loss to Oklahoma, although coach Gary Patterson refused to provide an update on their status this week. Lynn joined TCU as a three-star prospect and the No. 2 prep school tight end in 2016, choosing the Horned Frogs over Florida. He redshirted in 2016 and then played in nine games in 2017. He made three starts during the 2018 season, and five starts in 2019. - Fort Worth Star

Junior cornerback Tony Wallace has opted out of playing this season, a source confirmed. Wallace played in the Iowa State and Kansas State games. Along with playing cornerback, he served as a kickoff returner too. Wallace had four kickoff returns for 75 yards this season. Those were his only stats accumulated. Wallace joined the program as a three-star prospect out of Independence (Kansas) Community College in 2019. He played in two games in 2019. - Fort Worth Star

Sophomore cornerback JaTravis Broughton is optimistic that the Utah Utes can successfully restock their depleted secondary. All five starters from 2019 must be replaced. "We still have a long way to go, but we build every day. My confidence in my team is very high," Broughton said. "I see the potential that we have. We just have to do the little things better and when that comes along we will be great." Broughton, who saw limited action on defense (eight tackles overall) as a freshman, acknowledged it was beneficial to watch stars in the secondary like Jaylon Johnson, Julian Blackmon and others last season. Why Utah football's lone returning starter on defensive line 'has what it takes to play at the next level' "I was able to take from their technique and take from what they were able to tell me and use that with my own technique," he said. "It took a long time for me to come together, but I am ready to go now." The starters from last season, Broughton explained, helped him every day. "I was able to see how they operate and how they became that dog," he said. "And then, I was able to do it myself." Broughton topped the pre-camp depth chart at right cornerback. Junior Bronson Boyd held the No. 1 spot on the left side with sophomore Malone Mataele leading the way at nickel back. The starting safety positions were held by senior Vonte Davis and junior R.J. Hubert. - Deseret News

  10/21/20 - Mark PerryrSr/2024, Texas Christian, 6-0, 213 (DS#9 SS) + More +

Mark Perry began the 2019 season as a redshirt candidate. By the end, he was filling a key role off the Colorado bench. Now, as a true sophomore, Perry is setting a high bar for himself. "I have bigger expectations than last year," the 6-foot, 200-pound defensive back said. "I told myself over the offseason I want to be the best DB in the Pac-12, and I'm still standing by that." Where he ranks in the Pac-12 remains to be seen, but there's no question he will play a significant role for the Buffaloes this season. Perry sits atop the depth chart at strong safety, but he's also practiced at Star, a safety/outside linebacker hybrid position. "I'm comfortable everywhere and I expect to be playing everywhere," he said. "I mean, wherever they need me I can play. I can play Star, I can play corner, I can play safety. Whatever the team needs, that's where I can play."

Perry came to CU from Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) High School and didn't play in the first three games of 2019, as former head coach Mel Tucker planned to redshirt him. Injuries to the Buffs' secondary changed those plans, though. Over the last nine games, Perry started once and played 196 snaps. He made the most of those snaps, with 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss, three QB pressures and three pass breakups. "It meant a lot because I know what to expect now," Perry said. "I'm going to have some experience. Going in this year, I have higher expectations than I did last year. I know what to expect, the game is a lot faster. I know different reads, I know a lot of things that I probably wouldn't have known if I didn't get that playing time." - Daily Camera

  10/10/20 - JD SpielmanrSr/2022, Texas Christian, 5-09, 173 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Senior wide receiver JD Spielman, a transfer from Nebraska, says he is starting to notice the difference in offenses between the Big 12 and Big 10 teams. He said the Big 12 has more speed and the Big 10 has bigger players. Spielman says he is adjusting to the new offense and loves learning it. He has been a TCU fan recently and remembers watching them in 2014 when TCU was a top 5 school. He said it is different not getting as many targets as he did at Nebraska, recognizing it's a team sport. Spielman said he is just glad he gets another year of football. Gary Patterson also pointed out something that is different in the Big 12 than most leagues and that is the fact that the Big 12 plays a round-robin style. Patterson said since you play everyone each year it is hard to change it up and prepare a couple "new wrinkles" so the team won't know your game plan. He said, "I'm just trying to win this group a championship." - Dallas Morning News

  10/08/20 - Max DugganSr/2023, Texas Christian, 6-2, 207 (DS#13 QB) + More +

Asked about Duggan becoming a "star" in the Big 12, coach Gary Patterson said: "I don't know. He's really improved from last year on touch passes. A year ago, I used to say he needed before the ballgame to throw 10 really hard balls against a wall and get all the hard balls out of his system. Here in the first few games, he's had a couple touch passes for touchdowns that he's thrown that have been really good. He's just a true sophomore. "If we win enough ballgames, I'll leave it up for you guys to make him a star." - Fort Worth Star

  10/05/20 - Max DugganSr/2023, Texas Christian, 6-2, 207 (DS#13 QB) + More +

Max Duggan doesn't crumble under pressure. With a young and developing offensive line, last week proved tough for the Frogs to stop the Cyclones from getting to the TCU quarterbacks. Both the offensive line and Duggan showed improvement today against the rush. When the pocket was collapsing, Duggan didn't hesitate to make a play. His running ability has made him a true threat. Duggan went 20 for 30 with a 66% completion rate. He carried the ball 17 times for 79 yards. - Dallas Morning News

La'Kendrick Van Zandt has now had an interception in both games this season. Sam Ehlinger threw an interception to Van Zandt who returned the ball for 37 yards to the UT 5. Of course, the Frogs had a penalty on the play. Unsportsmanlike conduct from Van Zandt after the play resulted in TCU getting pushed back to the UT 10. He also had multiple big tackles throughout the game including on the Longhorns final drive when he tackled Keaontay Ingram on the TCU 1, followed by Garrett Wallow forcing the fumble on the next play. - Dallas Morning News

Taye Barber called it an Aaron Rodgers play. That's exactly what TCU needed and quarterback Max Duggan delivered. Duggan checked into a QB draw at the perfect time - late in the game after Texas had taken its first lead and TCU had to respond - and proceeded to sprint 26 yards through the heart of Texas' defense and into the end zone. That score proved to be the difference in TCU's 33-31 victory over No. 9 Texas on Saturday afternoon at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. "I saw him check the play and thought, 'You go do what you do Max,'" Barber said. "That's an Aaron Rodgers play. That's his favorite quarterback, so that's what I told him."

Said Duggan: "In that formation, we knew that check would've been good for us. We had a call in that formation and I saw an opening and I did a check and had room for it. We were just really excited to take the lead." TCU is now 7-2 against Texas since joining the Big 12 in 2012. This is a series that started back in 1897 with UT going 13-0-1 in the first 14 games. The Frogs won only seven games in the 41 meetings between the schools from 1956-2007. Saturday also marked the first time an unranked TCU team knocked off a top-10 team on the road since 2011 at Boise State. - Fort Worth Star

  10/03/20 - Max DugganSr/2023, Texas Christian, 6-2, 207 (DS#13 QB) + More +

TCU quarterback Max Duggan ran for the go-ahead score with 4 minutes left and the Horned Frogs' defense made it stand with a goal-line fumble recovery to stun No. 9 Texas 33-31 Saturday in a game that had 26 penalties and ended when TCU took a safety as time ran out. Texas looked primed for its second straight fourth-quarter comeback when Sam Ehlinger connected on a 52-yard pass to Keontay Ingram to put the Longohorns in scoring position. But Ingram fumbled on the TCU 1-yard-line with 2:32 to play. Darwin Barlow ran 9 yards to pick up a big first down for the Horned Frogs. Duggan then took a deep snap all the way to the back of the end zone to run out the final 6 seconds.

TCU (1-1, 1-1 Big 12) is now 7-2 against Texas since joining the Big 12 in 2012. The Texas loss delivers another blow to the Big 12's College Football Playoff hopes. The Longhorns (2-1, 1-1) and Oklahoma, who were the league's highest ranked teams, have now dropped early home games to unranked opponents. Duggan made his first start of the season after missing much of training camp while treating a previously undiagnosed heart condition. He passed for 231 yards and ran for 79 more and scored twice. His late 26-yard TD run caught the Texas defense by surprise as he had a clear path to the end zone. Ehlinger threw four touchdown passes on an otherwise difficult day for him. Ehlinger was just 17 of 36. - TCU/AP College Football
