TCU football isn't going to have a quarterback controversy this offseason. As far as who's starting at least. We've already written at-length about the Chandler Morris situation with Oklahoma and its coach Lincoln Riley. But Max Duggan is QB1 for TCU. He's the unquestioned leader as coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday. "He's fantastic," Patterson said. "He is the leader over there. He and the offensive line have a great relationship and that's another key ingredient you look at with how they get along. They have a great relationship. He lives with a couple of them and that always helps with everything." What remains unknown is the strides Duggan has taken in the passing game.

Accuracy issues were apparent throughout his true freshman season in 2019 when he completed just 53.4% of his passes. Duggan improved in 2020, completing 60.8% of his passes, but was limited much of the spring and fall due to a previously unknown heart condition discovered through advanced COVID-19 tests. Duggan finished the season completing 146 of 240 passes for 1,795 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. He also had 526 yards rushing and 10 TDs. Patterson said he felt Duggan threw the "deep ball" well in the fall, but reiterated his longtime stance that quarterbacks are judged on Saturdays. "It depends on the day, like any quarterback," Patterson said. "At the end of the day, you only get evaluated by the success of it." - Fort Worth Star

During his debut season with the Oregon State football program, Chance Nolan flashed dazzling athleticism and looked like he could be the Beavers' long-term answer at quarterback. But he also faced the ups and downs that most young signal callers do in the Pac-12, and struggled at times with the speed and physicality of the game. So in the three-and-a-half months since Oregon State's 2020 season finale, Nolan has worked to adapt his game from both a physical and mechanical standpoint. With one day of spring practice in the books, he and Oregon State's coaching staff are happy with the early return. "I thought he did a pretty good job in the weight room," offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren said. "Our strength guys really had the last three months with him, and he added a little bit of weight and strength. He had a little bit more zip on the ball today. In terms of durability, I think this will help him moving forward this season."

Nolan will enter the spring with a leg up in the starting quarterback competition, as last year's Week 1 starter, Tristan Gebbia, is still sidelined with a knee injury. With Gebbia out, that leaves Nolan, freshman Ben Gulbranson and incoming freshman Sam Vidlak as the only three active quarterbacks at the moment. All three had nice moments during the 7-on-7 portions of Tuesday's practice, and Lindgren pointed out that the lack of current depth under center could be a blessing in disguise. - Gazette Times

Junior Max Duggan has put together two impressive seasons at TCU. Taking over as QB1 his freshman year and continuing his leadership on the team in 2020 as a sophomore, Duggan has the potential to take the next step during his junior year. The thing that is intriguing about Duggan is not only his ability to see the field, but his legs. He is fast and doesn't let defenders pull him down easily. He led the team in rushing yards (713 gained, 526 net) and the next closest to him was Darwin Barlow with 444 (428 net). We could see some serious improvement from Duggan too with former TCU quarterback Kenny Hill moving into the role of quarterbacks coach. - Dallas Morning News

Van Zandt was a big-play guy in 2020. He recorded both of his interceptions in the first two games the Frogs won on the season. He created momentum when there was none, and TCU used his interceptions as momentum shifters in victories over Baylor and a ranked Texas team. TCU is losing its two best safeties to the 2020 NFL draft, and Van Zandt might be the perfect guy to step into one of the roles. He showed he at least deserves a look based on the opportunities he received last season. - Dallas Morning News

Obinna Eze is a graduate transfer from Memphis where he started every game the last two seasons. Eze was a highly recruited four-star prospect with offers to Alabma, Auburn and Florida, and it's safe to say that Eze is a big guy, standing at 6-8, 315 pounds. In 2020, the TCU offensive line allowed quarterback Max Duggan to be sacked 23 times, and Eze might just be the answer to the problem. If Eze can stop opposing rushers from getting into the backfield, Duggan will have more time to throw the ball downfield. - Dallas Morning News

Derius Davis exploded in 2020 and stepped into the role of the Frogs' go-to punt returner after Nebraska transfer J.D. Spielman suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Davis finished the season with 218 punt return yards and an average of 14.53 yards per return and two touchdowns. The speedster, who ran the fifth fastest 400m time in the nation in high school while at West Feliciana, has a punt return touchdown in two of his three years at TCU - with the other coming his freshman year. TCU head coach Gary Patterson said Davis is already a standout for the 2021 season after the start of spring practice. Davis finished the season with the third most receiving yards for the Frogs with 209 behind Quentin Johnston and Taye Barber. - Dallas Morning News

TCU coach Gary Patterson feels NFL teams are asking the same questions he did when it comes to Ar'Darius Washington. Washington checked in at just 5-foot-8, 178 pounds at TCU's pro day on Friday, not the ideal size for today's NFL safety. "He wasn't as big as I wanted him to be. He wasn't as fast as I wanted him to be. All the above," Patterson said. "But at the end of the day, he's a guy who has a lot of passion for the game and he makes a lot of plays." In 2020, Washington started all 10 games and finished with 37 tackles, including one tackle for loss and five pass breakups. He earned honorable mention All-Big 12 honors. At the pro day, Washington reportedly ran a 40-yard dash in the 4.61-second to 4.63-second range. He also had a 37 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 10 feet, 7 inch broad jump. "I felt decent," Washington said afterward. "Obviously there were a lot of things I could've done better, definitely from a technique standpoint. I felt overall I did pretty good." - Fort Worth Star

TCU linebacker Garret Wallow's pre-draft process had a significant setback when he pulled out of the Senior Bowl after testing positive for COVID-19 in late January. He made up for that during his pro day on Friday. Wallow was arguably TCU's biggest winner during the day, testing well and showcasing his athleticism in front of almost 60 NFL executives and scouts. Among those in attendance included Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman. "I definitely think I helped myself today," Wallow said afterward. "Especially doing both linebacker and safety drills. Definitely gave them another aspect of fluidity. Definitely bummed about not being able to do the Senior Bowl, but this is why I used today to give it my all." - Fort Worth Star

Farrar joined Auburn after spending 2016 at Oklahoma, 2017 at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and 2018 at Youngstown State. The Texas native didn't play in any games for TCU last season. He had three catches for 42 yards and two touchdowns at Auburn. - Birmingham News

TCU linebacker Garret Wallow is not taking part in this week's Senior Bowl after testing positive for COVID-19. Wallow revealed the positive test on his social media account Tuesday night, writing in part: "This was very unexpected because I always wear a mask everywhere I go. Fortunately, I feel better and look forward to getting back to work as soon as possible." Wallow, who is listed at 6-foot-2, 230 pounds, is viewed by some as a possible top-100 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. He is coming off another standout season in 2020, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors with 90 tackles, including nine tackles for loss and three sacks. He also had five QB hits and three forced fumbles. - Fort Worth Star

TCU football landed another Memphis transfer on Monday night. Defensive back T.J. Carter announced his intentions to play for the Horned Frogs, just 10 days after his Memphis teammate and offensive tackle Obinna Eze said he'd be coming to Fort Worth. Carter is listed at 5-foot-11, 190 pounds. Over four years and 46 games with the Tigers, he had 187 tackles, including six for a loss, seven interceptions and three forced fumbles. Carter played in seven games, with five starts, last season.   TCU football landed a big-time graduate transfer on Friday afternoon. Memphis left tackle Obinna Eze announced his intentions to join the Horned Frogs in a social media post, writing: "I'll be continuing my career at TCU and I'm excited for new opportunities." Eze has started 25 straight games at left tackle for Memphis. He graduated in December and has two years of eligibility remaining. TCU could have a void to fill at that spot depending on whether T.J. Storment returns next season. - Fort Worth Star

TCU quarterback Stephon Brown has entered the NCAA transfer portal, a source confirmed Tuesday night. Brown never appeared in a game during his lone season with the Horned Frogs. Brown's decision isn't too surprising considering TCU landed Oklahoma transfer Chandler Morris on Sunday. Morris is expected to add competition and depth behind starter Max Duggan. Brown joined TCU as the top-rated JUCO dual-threat quarterback in the 2020 class out of Independence (Kansas) Community College. Coach Gary Patterson mentioned during fall camp that Brown would have a package in the Frogs' offense. But Brown never saw the field, serving as the third-string quarterback behind Duggan and backup Matthew Downing. - Fort Worth Star
