Quentin Johnston caught two of Max Duggan's three TD passes, with the go-ahead score coming on a nifty catch-and-run as TCU beat California 34-32 on Saturday to remain undefeated against Pac-12 teams under coach Gary Patterson. Johnston put the Horned Frogs (2-0) ahead to stay with the 45-yard TD catch with 9:53 left, when he twisted around one defender who fell down near the 30 and then shed the attempted tackle by another inside the 10. Johnston finished with five catches for 95 yards. "I think I speak for the whole team when I say this ... we were very excited when he caught it," said running back Zach Evans. "I try to make that my main threat, getting yards after catch, just a lot of people think I'm 6-4, just a tall lanky receiver, getting the ball and go straight down," Johnston said. "But I try to prove that I can do more than that." Evans ran for 183 yards on 22 carries, with a 51-yard TD just before halftime for the Horned Frogs (2-0).

Duggan completed 17 of 31 passes for 234 yards and added 71 yards rushing on 19 carries with a 9-yard keeper for a TD with 5:47 left for a 34-26 lead. Chase Garbers threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns for Cal (0-2). He had 235 yards passing in the first half, with 199 of that coming on only four plays (49, 54, 28 and 68 yards). After starting 0-3 in their pandemic-shorted 1-3 season last year, the Bears have 0-2 starts in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1994 and 1995. "Ultimately as a defense, we didn't play well enough to win," Cal coach Justin Wilcox said. "We're a few plays away from playing pretty good football." Cal led 19-7 after Garbers threw a 7-yard TD to Nikko Remigio. That was a play after a 68-yard catch by Trevon Clark, whose only other catch was a 54-yard TD. - Texas Christian/AP College Football

Max Duggan threw for a touchdown and was one of four TCU players with a rushing score as the Horned Frogs routed lower-division Duquesne 45-3 in an opener shortened in the second half Saturday night. The coaches agreed to play 12-minute quarters after halftime with the Horned Frogs leading 35-0 in their first meeting with the FCS school. TCU improved to 19-2 in home openers under coach Gary Patterson. "We're really, really thin in our depth," Duquesne coach Jerry Schmitt said. "I was personally concerned because at our level, our backup guys are walk-on Division III-type players. To put some of them in to protect some of the skill guys... I appreciate Gary doing that." It was TCU's first non-conference game since 2019 after COVID-19 issues scrapped the only game outside Big 12 play last season along with a bowl appearance.

Duggan, who didn't play in the second half, finished a 90-yard drive on the opening possession with an 8-yard run. His 16-yard pass to J.D. Spielman finished the first-half scoring. The junior and third-year starter was 14 of 19 for 207 yards. "It was good for us to get started fast and stay on them," Duggan said. "We didn't want to play sloppy and make errors. Obviously my mistake of the interception, I've got to get that fixed. Other than that, it was a good half." - TCU/AP College Football

Vanderbilt football coach Clark Lea named Ken Seals starting quarterback Tuesday for the Commodores' opening game. Seals, last year's starter, set a school freshman passing record with 1,928 yards and a 64.6% completion percentage. He threw 12 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Seals is much more a pocket passer than a dual threat, with a long of 13 yards rushing last year. It is likely that both Seals and Mike Wright will be used in some capacity, just as they were last year. "We're proud of both those guys...We were allowing for those guys to establish themselves and build chemistry within the offense," Lea said. "But both quarterbacks will play. Mike Wright is...a super talented player and we're excited to see what kind of role he will carve out." Lea said that Wright had earned the right to play snaps in the offense and that the team didn't want to relegate him to a situational role. - Tennessean

Just about 12 months ago, Max Duggan was facing the possibility that the season and maybe his career was over. It started with a positive COVID-19 diagnosis and ended with a heart procedure, Duggan recounted recently. Now he's preparing for his third season as TCU's starting quarterback. "It was crazy," Duggan said, recalling the positive COVID test in 2020. "When they started doing all these heart treatments, they found out I had this heart abnormality and it had nothing to do with COVID. I've had it since I was a baby. "That was the thing. I had to go through a heart procedure. I didn't know if I would play football again and started asking more questions."

He called his parents, Jim and Deb Duggan in Council Bluffs, Iowa. It was an athletic family. His father had been a college quarterback and successful high school coach. His mother had been a standout college hurdler. They told their son it was about doing what was best for him and staying healthy and not putting his life at risk. And he and his parents talked to doctors about the effect of the condition, for now and for essentially the rest of his life. "I had no idea what to think," Duggan said. "My first thought was is this is going to affect my present in football. Is it going to affect me when I'm 50 years old and I can't do anything? It was scary at first thought." - Dallas Morning News

TCU cornerback Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson is generating some preseason hype this week. Tomlinson landed on the Lott IMPACT Trophy watch list on Wednesday. On Thursday, he was named a second-team preseason All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. The Lott Trophy goes to the nation's top defensive player in terms of his impact on and off the field, while Walter Camp is the nation's oldest college football All-America team. Tomlinson finished his sophomore season with 13 pass breakups, which led the Big 12 and were second nationally. TCU hasn't had a Lott Trophy winner since Jerry Hughes won the honor in 2009. - Fort Worth Star

Taye Barber has been a consistent player for TCU over the past three years. During his career, he has recorded 92 receptions for 993 yards and four touchdowns. In 2020, he was the go-to guy for Duggan with 31 receptions (team-high) and was awarded 2020 Honorable Mention All-Big 12. Barber is sure to continue his impact downfield in the 2021 season. - Dallas Morning News

TCU linebacker Dylan Jordan is entering the NCAA transfer portal. Jordan announced the news on his social media account Monday. Jordan is the second scholarship defensive player to enter the portal, joining former safety Atanza Vongor. Vongor recently committed to Colorado. Jordan, a sophomore, was a backup middle linebacker behind Dee Winters last season. He played primarily on special teams, registering one tackle on the season. He appeared in all 10 games for the Frogs. Jordan, who is listed at 6-foot-3, 197 pounds, likely would have had a similar role this season with Winters returning from a breakout season. Jamoi Hodge and Wyatt Harris are the top candidates to start opposite of Winters. The Frogs also just added another high-profile player to the linebacker corps in Texas A&M transfer Shadrach Banks. - Fort Worth Star

TCU football won the sweepstakes for Texas A&M transfer Shadrach Banks this weekend. Banks announced Saturday that he'd be joining TCU. Banks is joining the program with intentions of transitioning from wide receiver to linebacker, a source confirmed. Banks, a four-star prospect in the 2021 class out of Houston North Shore, entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal after less than a semester on A&M's campus. Banks worked with the wide receivers in his short time with the Aggies, but will play linebacker for the Frogs. TCU saw its top linebacker and leading tackler Garret Wallow depart this offseason. Wallow was drafted by the Houston Texans a couple weeks ago. - Fort Worth Star

Davis was already a breakout candidate in 2020 and will continue to do damage in 2021. The junior had three touchdowns recorded on the season -- one receiving and two returns. Davis stepped in as the primary returner after JD Spielman was benched due to injury but with his success, could keep the starting role in 2021. - Dallas Morning News

TCU is known for its outstanding defense, specifically in pass coverage. The 2020 team totaled 44 pass breakups and eight interceptions. Tre'Vius Hodges Tomlinson led the team with 13 breakups and C.J. Ceasar II led the team with three interceptions. They are both on the roster in 2021. - Dallas Morning News

Ar'Darius Washington has never had ideal size at 5-foot-8, 178 pounds, but that didn't stop him from becoming a playmaker in TCU's secondary. Most expected that NFL teams would relish his elite-level instincts, too, with a few mock drafts projecting him as a third-round talent. However, Washington ranked among the biggest surprises to go undrafted in the 2021 NFL Draft. He never heard his named called this weekend. That reality has forced Washington to go the undrafted free-agent route. Washington reached a deal with the Baltimore Ravens, according to TCU football's Twitter account. The news was announced after the draft concluded Saturday. - Fort Worth Star

Last fall, Mark Perry was on the field for a large majority of the defensive snaps for the Colorado football team. The sophomore safety wasn't too pleased with how he performed, however. "I'm gonna be completely honest about last year," he said. "I put last year on the back burner. Last year might have been one of my worst years playing football ever, to be honest. That's how I felt. I feel like I hold myself to a high standard, so last year really bothered me. I wasn't making a lot of plays. I was leaving a lot of plays on the field." Preparing for his third season with the Buffaloes, Perry is still just 19 years old - he turns 20 on May 30 - with plenty of room to grow. He's intent on making a lot of progress this spring. "Coming out this spring I already had a chip on my shoulder just to show people that, like, I'm not a bust," Perry said. "I've been here two years, I've been in a different position each year, so I'm still learning. This might be my fourth year playing (defensive back) full time, so I'm still learning every day."

Although Perry didn't live up to his standard last season - he finished with 10 tackles and one pass breakup in the Buffs' five-game regular season - he is an integral part of the defense going forward. A projected starter at free safety, Perry is the most experienced player on the back end of the Buffs' defense. That experience is showing this spring, as the Buffs have completed 10 of 15 practices. "His safety play is night and day difference from what it was in the fall," CU head coach Karl Dorrell said. "He's had his hands on a few catches, a few balls already with interceptions, so I've been very pleased where Mark's at." - Daily Camera

TCU coach Gary Patterson offered big-time praise for center Steve Avila this week. "I think Steve Avila is going to be one of the best centers in the country, if not the best," Patterson said. "He's a really good player. He's 330 pounds and can really move side to side. I've been very impressed with him [this spring]." Avila is coming off a standout sophomore season in which he showed his versatility. He started nine games at three different positions (six at center, two at right tackle and one at right guard) and held his own. Avila was named to the Rimington Trophy watch list, which is given to the nation's top center every year, and was named honorable mention All-Big 12. It hasn't been an easy road for Avila, though.

Avila stepped on campus having never snapped the ball as a four-star prospect out of South Grand Prairie. He played left tackle in high school and spent his redshirt freshman season at TCU playing tackle on the scout team in 2018. Then he moved inside, playing guard and center, in 2019. He was the team's backup center for the 2019 season before moving into a starting role in 2020. Asked about his transition from tackle to center last season, Avila said: "I really had to learn how to snap the ball. I never snapped the ball until I got here. It was a learning process. I messed up a lot, but I learned a lot as well. That's how I got to where I am today." - Fort Worth Star
