2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: E.J. Smith (Jr.), Stanford,...While this may be a common surname, E. J. Smith is descended from football royalty. Hint, E. J. stands for Emmitt James. Yep, his father, Emmitt, is the Pro Football Hall of Famer who rushed for 18,355 yards and 164 touchdowns in 15 NFL seasons. Meantime, E. J. enters his junior year at Stanford trying to carve out his own legacy. As a sophomore in 2021 he was on the Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll; appeared in seven games with one start; Rushed for 133 yards, averaging 5.1 yards per carry, with one touchdown; Added 15 receptions for 74 yards. He scored his first career touchdown on a fourth quarter run, totaling 41 yards (Sept. 18). Even if E. J.'s college rushing counted towards the pros, he still has 10.35 miles to go to catch dad. - Stanford Football

Texas A&M receiver Ainias Smith was arrested early Wednesday on charges of driving while intoxicated, unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana, according to Brazos County jail records. Smith, 21, was arrested by Texas A&M police and was booked into the Brazos County jail. He posted $8,000 bond and was released later Wednesday, according to jail records. The records did not indicate if he had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Smith has been suspended from the football team per athletic department policy following his arrest, according to Alan Cannon, a spokesman for Texas A&M. Cannon added that coach Jimbo Fisher was aware of the situation and looking into it. Smith was scheduled to attend SEC Media Days on Thursday in Atlanta with Fisher and two other players. Smith is Texas A&M's top returning receiver after grabbing 47 catches for 509 yards and six touchdowns last season.   The spat between Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher and Alabama's Nick Saban appears to be over - at least publicly. A jovial Fisher said repeatedly Wednesday that he was "moving on" from the war of words with his former boss that added some soap-opera drama to the Southeastern Conference's spring meetings this week. Fisher said he and Saban had "normal conversations" during two days of meetings with the other 12 SEC football coaches.

The coaches covered topics such as future scheduling models for the conference, transfer rules and how college sports can get a handle on the way athletes are compensated for use of their names, images and likenesses. "It's over with. We're done talking about it. We're moving on to the future of what goes on and try to fix the problems that we have in college football," Fisher said. "There's a lot more pressing needs than our arguments." "We're done. We're moving on. I have no problem," he added. The next time Saban and Fisher are guaranteed to get together is Oct. 8 when the Crimson Tide hosts the Aggies. Texas A&M upset then-No. 1 Alabama last season in College Station, Texas. - AP College Football

Shaw admitted that Stanford's losing streak last year took a toll on the locker room. Every position group on the team needed to improve, he said, but the two priorities for the Cardinal this offseason are straightforward. "Stopping the run and running the football," Shaw said. "Those two are the biggest impetus for the changes that we've made." It was Smith, the highly touted recruit and son of NFL Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith, that stole the show in the final practice of the week with his breakaway run. Shaw and offensive coordinator Tavita Pritchard confirmed that the junior is slated to take over as the top running back after the departure of Austin Jones and Nathaniel Peat. "He's got such a unique ability to make people miss in space," Pritchard said. "And the physicality of his game - I just love that he's a violent runner. Unfortunately, sometimes it's been tough for him to stay healthy. But we're confident with how he's working in the weight room and transforming his body here in the offseason that he'll be able to both utilize that running style and stay healthy for a season."

Smith rushed for 133 yards and 5.1 yards per carry last season in support of starters Jones and Peat, but the Texas-native was sidelined several times by injury. Shaw suggested that Smith would have taken on a bigger role last year after a breakout performance against Vanderbilt had he stayed healthy. In that September game, Smith scored his only touchdown of the season after an impressive cutback and hurdle into the endzone. "He was just getting going three different times when injury kept him out," Shaw said. "What he did at the end of the Vanderbilt game was really exciting, and we were ready to give him a bigger chunk of the offense." - The Stanford Daily
