  04/08/20 - Kellen MondSr/2021, Texas AM, 6-3, 211 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp said Wednesday that officials believe a 13-game college football schedule would be possible even if the start of the season was delayed until October because of the new coronavirus. The season is scheduled to begin with seven FBS games Aug. 29 before the majority of teams open the following week. Speaking in a live video discussion with the Texas Tribune, Sharp addressed the football season in answering a question about the university system's lost revenue because of college sporting events which have been canceled because of the COVID-19 virus.

Sharp said he's gotten many questions about football and whether it will return on time this season, if at all. "In some conversations with SEC officials and NCAA, I think they've come to the conclusion that you can probably start football as late as October and still have a 13-game schedule," Sharp said. Sharp then added that there are many unknowns about football season because of the pandemic that has killed thousands and shut down sports across the globe. "We don't know when this thing is going to end," he said. "We don't know when this is going to happen. For all we know, we may have football where we have coaches and players and referees on a field with a TV camera and nobody in the stadium. We don't know." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Kellen Mond ran for a career-high 117 yards and threw a touchdown pass as Texas A&M scored 24 straight points to overcome an early deficit and beat Oklahoma State 24-21 in the Texas Bowl on Friday night. Mond ran 67 yards to give the Aggies (8-5) a 21-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. Mond cut to the right to avoid a couple of defenders and outran everyone else. Tre Sterling had a shot to tackle him around the 25, but Mond ran away from his diving attempt. The Cowboys (8-5) went for it on fourth-and-1 from the Texas A&M 34 on their next possession, but Spencer Sanders was stopped for no gain. The Aggies added a 24-yard field goal to make it 24-14 with about three minutes to go.

Oklahoma State cut the lead to three on a touchdown reception by Braydon Johnson with about a minute left. The Cowboys attempted an onside kick, but A&M recovered it to secure the victory. Chuba Hubbard, who finished the regular season as the nation's leading rusher, ran for 158 yards, and Johnson had 124 yards receiving and two touchdowns for the Cowboys. Hubbard finished the seasonw with 2,094 yards rushing to become the second player in school history to reach 2,000, joining Barry Sanders, who did it in 1988 when he won the Heisman Trophy. Sanders tweeted congratulations to Hubbard after he reached the mark and said: "I know the effort it takes to get there." Mond, who threw for 95 yards, fumbled twice early and the Aggies trailed 14-0 after the first quarter and were down by seven at halftime. - AP College Football

Texas A&M junior defensive tackle Justin Madubuike has opted to forego his senior season and declare for the NFL draft. He also has indicated he will sit out the Texas Bowl matchup between the Aggies and Oklahoma State on December 27. Madubuike made the announcement on Thursday via Instagram and Twitter. Madubuike was named to the Associated Press All-SEC second team defense after posting 45 tackles, 5.5 sacks, seven quarterback pressures and 11.5 tackles for loss. He arrived at A&M as a four-star defensive end recruit out of McKinney North High School in 2016. He literally outgrew the defensive end position as he developed into a 6-foot-3, 304 pounder, but he retained quickness and agility. - TexAgs.com

Kellen Mond threw for 221 yards and a touchdown and ran for a second score as Texas A&M extended its winning streak to four games with a 30-6 win over South Carolina on Saturday night. Cordarrian Richardson ran for 130 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown, and added a TD reception to help the Aggies to the victory on a night they piled up 319 yards rushing. With just four wins and one game left the loss guarantees that the Gamecocks (4-7, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) won't make a bowl game for the first time in four seasons. South Carolina fell to 0-6 all-time against Texas A&M and lost its second straight game this season after falling to Appalachian State last week.

The Aggies led by 10 at halftime and neither team could get anything going after the break, combining for six punts in the third quarter. South Carolina went three-and-out twice and the Aggies punted after just three plays once. Texas A&M (7-3, 4-2) was finally able to sustain a drive when it capped a 14-play drive with a 40-yard field goal which extended the lead to 16-3 early in the fourth quarter. The Aggies forced a fourth straight punt by South Carolina after that and Mond made it 22-3 with a 1-yard TD dive with about 10 minutes left. Richardson set up that score when he scampered 31 yards a play earlier. - Texas A&M/AP College Football

When Texas A&M fell behind by a touchdown early on Saturday against UTSA, the Aggies needed something to get them going quickly. They got it in a 60-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Spiller on the first play of the next drive and the freshman's big day helped the Aggies to a 45-14 win. "When you hit those one play drives it demoralizes people. It does," coach Jimbo Fisher said. "It takes the heart out of guys on the other side. It takes a mature team to bounce back from that and on offense it gives you that adrenaline." Spiller set season highs with 217 yards rushing and three touchdowns to lead the Aggies to their third straight victory and make them bowl eligible for the 11th straight season.

The Aggies (6-3) were up by 14 when a 50-yard touchdown run by Spiller made it 28-7 early in the third quarter. Spiller padded the lead on an 8-yard run later in the third quarter on a drive where he had a 42-yard run. "He was the catalyst today," Fisher said. "He's growing each and every day." Kellen Mond threw for 211 yards and a touchdown, and his 1-yard TD run on the first drive of the fourth quarter made it 42-7. He was replaced on A&M's next drive with the Aggies in control of the game. Mond said the development of the running game has really helped him in the passing game and he's been impressed by the growth of Spiller this season. - AP College Football

After constantly talking to his team about the importance of playing complementary football, coach Jimbo Fisher was thrilled to see Texas A&M score touchdowns off each of Mississippi State's three turnovers in a win on Saturday. "You learn to feed off each other, that's what sports is about," Fisher said. "We capitalized today." Kellen Mond threw for 234 yards and accounted for five touchdowns to lead Texas A&M to the 49-30 victory. "Kellen I thought really managed the game well today. ...he was so accurate with the football," Fisher said. "He just keeps growing as a football player."

The Aggies (5-3, 3-2 SEC) led by 18 points at halftime after taking advantage of two turnovers by Mississippi State (3-5, 1-4). They didn't waste any time getting going in the second half when Jalen Wydermyer scored a touchdown on a 52-yard catch and run on the fourth play of the third quarter to make it 35-10. Garrett Schrader threw a 14-yard pass to Isaiah Zuber for a score to cut the lead to 35-17 on Mississippi State's first drive of the second half. But freshman Isaiah Spiller had a 4-yard TD run after that to stretch it to 42-17. Kylin Hill had a 39-yard run on Mississippi State's next drive and capped it with a 4-yard touchdown run to get the Bulldogs within 42-24 early in the fourth. - Texas A&M/AP College Football

  10/20/19 - *Justin MadubuikerJr/2020, Texas AM, 6-3, 293 (DS#6 DT) + More +

Texas A&M defensive tackle Justin Madubuike needed less than five minutes to turn two game-changing plays Saturday night that lifted the Aggies to a 24-17 comeback win over Mississippi. "I just tried to put myself in position to make big plays for my team, said Madubuike, who finished with five tackles, including a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry. "It's blocking a ball, sacking a quarterback and all those little things that helped us come out with a win." Trailing 14-10 midway through the third quarter, Madubuike teamed with Jhamon Ausbon to force a fumble on a sack of Ole Miss quarterback John Rhys Plumlee. Linebacker Buddy Johnson scooped the loose ball and returned it for a 62-yard touchdown that gave the Aggies a 17-14 lead they never surrendered.

On the ensuing drive by the Rebels, Madubuike swatted away a potential game-tying 35-yard field goal. The Aggies (4-3, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) added a clinching touchdown drive, capped by a 22-yard touchdown run from Isaiah Spiller, to survive a game that featured five lead changes, four turnovers and three missed field goals. "You've got to learn to win on the bad days," Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said. "You have to find a way to come out on top and I give our team credit for that." Kellen Mond was 16 of 28 for 172 yards passing and added 76 yards rushing on 15 attempts for the Aggies. Braden Mann kept Ole Miss in poor field position with five punts for a 52.2 yard average, with a final fourth quarter kick of 55 yards that rolled out at the Ole Miss 1-yard line. - Texas A&M/AP College Football
