  09/26/20 - *Isaiah SpillerJr/2022, Texas AM, 6-0, 217 (DS#3 RB) + More +

Isaiah Spiller had 117 yards rushing and Ainias Smith ran for a touchdown to help No. 10 Texas A&M overcome three turnovers in a mistake-filled game to beat Vanderbilt 17-12 on Saturday night in the season-opener for both teams. Spiller had 5 five yards rushing in the first half before getting going after halftime. Smith added 51 yards rushing after switching from receiver to running back this season to steady the offense on a night when Kellen Mond fumbled twice, losing one.

The Aggies didn't trail after the first quarter but were never able to pull away despite entering the game as 30-point favorites because of three fumbles and a penalty that resulted in a safety. Vanderbilt started Ken Seals at quarterback, making him just the third true freshman QB to start a SEC season opener since freshman eligibility was restored in 1972. He threw for 150 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Spiller got things going for A&M after halftime when he ran for 57 yards on the first play of the third quarter. Texas A&M pushed the lead to 14-5 when Mond connected with Caleb Chapman on a 17-yard TD pass two plays later. - AP College Football

So far, five Texas A&M football players have decided to opt out of playing in the 2020 football season. The two most noticeable were the more recent, junior wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon and junior linebacker Anthony Hines III. Aggie head football coach Jimbo Fisher said every players' exit caught him by surprise, but with a global pandemic and racial injustice issues at the forefront of everyone's minds, he understands. "It always keeps you off guard because you hate to lose those guys," Fisher said Monday on a Zoom conference. "But at the same time, all those things that have happened out there today, in this world and in recent times, there's so many things and the way they affect young men and the way they affect families and we don't always know the family effects that they've had and what those families have dealt with."

After initially announcing his intent to opt out of the season Sunday, Hines tweeted more information about his decision, saying he wouldn't declare for the NFL draft and plans on playing in 2021. "I've lost someone very close to me and my family to COVID three weeks ago," Hines tweeted Monday. "I made the decision to opt out of this season due to concern for me & my family's safety, as well as to try and make an impact off the field regarding social injustice. "I plan to uses this fall to focus on the last class I have left here at A&M and get active in my community," he continued. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

  09/16/20 - Jhamon AusbonSr/2021, Texas AM, 6-2, 217 (DS#47 WR) + More +

The Texas A&M football team needed Jhamon Ausbon, but the wide receiver needed the Aggies just as much, if not more. Ausbon announced Sunday he'll forgo his senior season to prepare for the NFL Draft, a decision that makes about as much sense as everything else that's happened in 2020. Ausbon wasn't just the team's top veteran wide receiver, he was really the only one. He also was a team captain who the young, talented receivers could lean on. He has the savvy and size at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds to handle a grueling 10-game Southeastern Conference schedule. His absence will be costly. It won't be measured so much in the game-winning catches or number of catches, but rather is his day-to-day presence. Players with 35 career starts don't grow on trees. But it could prove more costly for Ausbon, who walked away from a sweet situation.

He already was the go-to receiver, and that was before juniors Quartney Davis and Kendrick Rogers opted not to return and A&M lost tight ends Baylor Cupp and Blake Smith to season-ending receivers. Ausbon's targets would have been off the charts this season from quarterback Kellen Mond, who already looked for his roommate in a pinch. There's more to Ausbon's head-scratching decision that will bloody many Aggies' heads. Ausbon threw nothing but positive vibes during a Zoom conference on Aug. 20. He looked forward to finishing what he started four years ago. He took pride in being a leader. He loved the guys he came in with and the young receivers he was mentoring. Ausbon was part of an incoming class that has weathered a coaching change and is in position to help A&M possibly have its best season since joining the SEC in 2012. Those all are moments some players never get to experience. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

  09/15/20 - Jhamon AusbonSr/2021, Texas AM, 6-2, 217 (DS#47 WR) + More +

Less than two weeks before the start of the season, Texas A&M has lost its top wide receiver. Senior Jhamon Ausbon announced Sunday that he's opting out of the season and beginning his prep for the 2021 NFL draft. Ausbon, a big part of the Texas A&M passing game each of the last three years, was a team captain for the Aggies last season and led A&M with 66 catches and 872 yards. Based on early NFL feedback and grades gathered by AL.com, Ausbon seems to be viewed as a fourth-to-fifth round type player at this point. It's a definite blow to the Texas A&M offense. With Ausbon opting out and with Camron Buckley out for the year due to a knee injury, the Aggies don't have anyone currently playing wide receiver that caught more than three passes last season. - Birmingham News

Many people have picked up new hobbies and activities while quarantined amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and Texas A&M linebacker Anthony Hines III put his passion for music into practice while staying at home earlier this year. In late spring, Hines posted three songs under the artist's name "BillisDead" to SoundCloud, an online audio and music sharing platform. He recently released a song titled SOPHISTICATED. Hines said he recorded the songs on his own. "I picked up a little music hobby," Hines said. "That was just the nature of the pandemic, just a lot of time to yourself, a little bit of boredom, and I've always been a pretty good writer, so I just got to writing some music, and the rest is history." Hines draws some of his inspiration from 13-time Grammy award winner and rapper Kendrick Lamar. "I would say Kendrick Lamar is probably my favorite artist," Hines said. "Just the artistry, the word play and the creativity."

Hines said he often sings in the locker room, and his voice has caught the attention of his teammates, too. During a luncheon prior to last year's Texas Bowl against Oklahoma State, Hines was called on stage in front of several hundred people as the team's best singer. Hines proceeded to sing an a cappella version of Vanessa Carlton's hit pop single A Thousand Miles with many teammates standing and singing along in the crowd. "If it wasn't for my brothers, I would have never sang in front of a big crowd like that," Hines said. "It was a fun time." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

  09/01/20 - *Isaiah SpillerJr/2022, Texas AM, 6-0, 217 (DS#3 RB) + More +

Texas A&M running back Isaiah Spiller was ready when his chance came, moving up the depth chart from one of many backups to the position group's leader in less than a dozen games. Spiller rushed for 946 yards and 10 touchdowns last season to make the All-Southeastern Conference team. He managed only 36 yards rushing in his first three SEC games combined but blossomed to shoulder 80% of the running back carries over the last eight games. "My role has changed a lot from a year ago, which is kind of crazy," Spiller said this week on a Zoom conference call. "But I feel like I've really stepped up this year. I have to be a leader, because I have the most experience. I really can help everybody around me to get better. I know what they're going to experience because I went through that before."

Jashaun Corbin began last season as A&M's starting tailback. The 207-pounder was coming off a solid freshman season as the backup for Trayveon Williams, the SEC rushing champion. He had 346 yards on 61 carries for a solid 5.7 yards per carry average in 2018, and many expected him to approach the 1,760 yards on 271 carries posted that same season by Williams, who opted not to return for his senior year. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

  08/22/20 - Kellen MondSr/2021, Texas AM, 6-3, 211 (DS#8 QB) + More +

When Texas A&M senior quarterback Kellen Mond has looked back on his career in Aggieland and discussed his highs and lows with roommate and wide receiver Jhamon Ausbon, there has been a common thread to the moments of success. Decisiveness. It's become an area of focus for the veteran quarterback through a tumultuous offseason. "He doesn't feel like he's been all the way decisive as he should have been," Ausbon said. "As you see, his highs in certain games are when he's his most decisive and when he's most comfortable making decisions. I think that is the one thing that he would say himself that he's trying to work on, everyday decisions in life and being pretty sure in what you want to do."

Life away from the football field has presented a whole new set of choices for college athletes. As protests for equality have been held across America this summer, Mond decisively chose to let his voice be heard, a move noticed by teammates, the university and the Aggie community alike, to a varied assortment of responses. "Anything that's going on, I'm always trying to grow and learn, not just in football but more about life and I'm just trying to give people the same respect that I would want for myself," Mond said during a Zoom press conference Tuesday. "I think I have definitely grown off the field in learning more about myself." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

2020 MANNING AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Kellen Mond, Sr., Texas A&M ,...One of the most impactful players in all of college football, Mond is one of two active players in FBS with 7,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards and ranks fourth among active players in total offense. Mond is poised to rewrite the Texas A&M passing record book as he enters the 2020 season within striking distance of the career mark for every passing category. The senior quarterback needs 632 yards, 37 completions and 15 touchdowns to become Texas A&M's all-time leader in each category. Mond finished second in total offense, third in passing yardage and fifth in passing touchdowns in the Southeastern Conference in 2019. - Texas A&M Football
