Texas A&M's first win at Davis Wade Stadium since 2012 started and ended with the defensive line Saturday. The Aggie defensive front recorded six sacks, forced a fumble and brought pressure that resulted in an interception in the 28-14 win. Defensive coordinator Mike Elko dialed up a three-man rush on most plays, leaving eight players to drop into coverage against Mississippi State's passing attack. With junior defensive tackle Bobby Brown out, Jayden Peevy anchored the middle of a three-man front, next to a rotating medley of ends. Defensive end DeMarvin Leal had the biggest impact on the Bulldog passing game, recording a sack, a tackle for loss and three quarterback hurries in the game. - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Isaiah Spiller ran for 114 yards and two touchdowns and Kellen Mond threw for two scores to help the No. 11 Aggies beat Mississippi State 28-14 on Saturday. Texas A&M (3-1) led 14-0 at the half and had 325 yards of total offense in the game. Ainias Smith caught five passes for 20 yards and a touchdown. Chase Lane caught two passes, including a 51-yard touchdown reception in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Mississippi State (1-3) had little offensive rhythm for the third straight game. The Bulldogs' first touchdown came on Emmanuel Forbes' interception return in the third quarter. - AP College Football

  10/15/20 - Kellen MondSr/2021, Texas AM, 6-3, 211 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Last week Mond passed Johnson's career completion mark of 650. After Saturday, Mond has completed 680 career passes. Mond completed 25 of 35 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns Saturday. His passer rating of 180.8 is the second highest of his career, bested only by his 202.4 performance against Mississippi State last season in a 23-17 win. "My heart hurts for my [Florida Gators] but credit to [Kellen Mond] for a great game," former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow tweeted. "Worked so hard for this moment in the offseason." Mond now looks to the career record for touchdown passes. He sits eight behind Johnson's record of 67.

After Saturday's game, Mond was presented with the game ball, which he said he will keep forever. However, it is after a career has come to a close that players can reflect on such accomplishments, A&M head coach Fisher said, a philosophy which Mond shares. "That's awesome," Fisher said of the record. "You sit back and look at records when you retire and you're done and you're proud of them. You achieve them as you go. Just like in a game, you don't worry about winning the game - you worry about the process of each play. What you accumulate in between you look at when it's all said and done, and that's what he's doing right now. That doesn't even phase him. "I'm very proud of him. He's making a lot of strides as a player, as a quarterback and as a leader in so many different ways. Still a lot of ball and a lot of growth we can still have." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

  10/15/20 - *Isaiah SpillerJr/2022, Texas AM, 6-0, 217 (DS#3 RB) + More +

As the game wore on, Texas A&M turned to the legs of Isaiah Spiller to continue moving the ball in the Aggies' 41-38 win over No. 4 Florida on Saturday at Kyle Field. The sophomore tailback chomped through the Gator defense for 174 yards on a career-high 27 carries. Spiller averaged 6.4 yards per attempt and scored twice. "Isaiah was awesome today," A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher said. "Ran the ball hard and physical against a very good, physical defense, and I'm very proud of him. That's a big-time effort today." Early in the fourth quarter, Spiller bounced off a defender on a fourth-and-2 run and dashed into the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown run that gave the Aggies their first lead of the game. Spiller said A&M's offensive line made his job easy.

"We had momentum going," Spiller said. "Cagan [Baldree] came around, he made a good block, and then the O-line did their job. I just ran and did my job, bounced off that tackle and ran into the end zone." Overall A&M ran 38 times for 205 yards with the majority of it coming from Spiller in the second half, when he gained 133 yards on 20 carries. "It was huge, especially starting that second half and when we started getting the run game going," A&M quarterback Kellen Mond said. "Florida got in multiple different looks to try and stop that run, and they were never able to capitalize." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Isaiah Spiller rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 21 Texas A&M beat fourth-ranked Florida 41-38 on Seth Small's 26-yard field goal as time expired Saturday. Spiller helped get the Aggies get into position for Small's decisive kick, giving Jimbo Fisher his first win over a top-five team since taking over as Texas A&M coach. Kellen Mond threw a 51-yard pass to Caleb Chapman for a tying TD with about 4½ minutes to go. The Gators were driving when Buddy Johnson forced a fumble by Malik Davis, and it was recovered by DeMarvin Leal to set up the game-ending field goal.

Mond passed for 338 yards and three touchdowns to help the Aggies (2-1, 2-1 SEC) down the previously undefeated Gators (2-1, 2-1) Florida quarterback Kyle Trask had 312 yards passing and four TDs, but the Gators were done in by the late mistake and another poor performance by their defense. Chapman finished with nine receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns as the Aggies bounced back from last week's lopsided loss to No. 2 Alabama. Leon O'Neal intercepted Trask on Florida's first drive of the second half, but the play was wiped away because of a hands-to-the-face penalty on Michael Clemons. There was a scuffle after a play later in that drive that resulted in unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for both teams. - AP College/Texas A&M Football

Kellen Mond was a lot of people's preseason choice for the SEC's best quarterback. But with the loss to Alabama he is now 2-10 against ranked opponents. Mond has only rushed for 37 yards in two games but has thrown for four touchdowns, He also has a pick-six on his resume this season. Mond has to play better for A&M to remain among the ranked teams in America. - Gainesville Sun

A&M senior quarterback Kellen Mond upped his total offensive yards to 9,307 against Alabama, joining Johnny Manziel as the only two quarterbacks in school history to compile over 9,000 yards in total offense in their careers. Mond finished the game with 318 passing yards, throwing for over 300 yards for the sixth time in his career. Mond's three touchdowns against the Crimson Tide matched his regulation career high single-game passing touchdowns. The only time Mond has thrown more than three touchdowns in a game was in the Aggies' seven-overtime win over LSU in 2018. - Bryan/College Station

  10/06/20 - *Jalen WydermyerJr/2022, Texas AM, 6-4, 257 (DS#11 TE) + More +

Not surprisingly, Mond had a big game against Alabama because of those around him. Tight end Jalen Wydermyer, who will be in the NFL one day, had eight catches for 82 yards. But the big key was sophomore Ainias Smith, a budding star. The wide receiver-turned-running back had six catches for 123 yards and two scores. Redshirt freshman Chase Lane added six catches for 62 yards. That trio is only going to get better with experience. - Bryan/College Station

  10/06/20 - *Jaylon JonesJr/2023, Texas AM, 6-2, 200 (DS#25 CB) + More +

The secondary had little answer for Alabama quarterback Mac Jones and his speedy receivers. The Crimson Tide twice picked on Aggie freshman cornerback Jaylon Jones, including a 78-yard touchdown pass and run from Jones to John Metchie early in the first quarter. Later in the third quarter with Alabama facing a second-and22, speedster Jaylen Waddle burned through the middle of the Aggie defense and caught a pass behind everybody for an 87-yard score. Jones added a 63-yard TD pass to another wide-open Metchie in the fourth. Jones threw for 435 yards and four touchdowns as the Tide needed just 52 rushing yards through the first three quarters to seize control. Not a great look heading into another matchup with one of the Southeastern Conference's best passing offenses next week against Florida. - Bryan/College Station

A cart was brought out to take Texas A&M offensive lineman Grayson Reed off the field in the first quarter of Saturday's game. Reed had tears in his eyes as the cart took him off the field. The injury occurred with 10:43 left in the first quarter on a Texas A&M field goal attempt. He appeared to collide with Alabama defensive back Daniel Wright. They put an air cast on Reed's leg. The game was scoreless at the time of the injury. Alabama defeated Texas A&M 52-24. Reed is a 6-foot-5, 300-pound junior from Cypress, Texas. - Montgomery Advertiser

The SEC had only one team produce a 100-yard rusher in its opening week (Isaiah Spiller, Texas A&M), and everyone was critical of the Aggies grossly underperforming. By comparison, the pass-happy Big 12 had three 100-yard rushers for the second consecutive week. - Birmingham News

  09/30/20 - Kellen MondSr/2021, Texas AM, 6-3, 211 (DS#8 QB) + More +

Texas A&M senior quarterback Kellen Mond earned a vote of confidence from head coach Jimbo Fisher on Monday, coming off a lackluster performance against Vanderbilt. Mond completed 17 of 28 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown in the 17-12 season-opening victory Saturday night at Kyle Field. He also fumbled the football twice and was inconsistent at hitting his receivers. Fisher said there were four or five throws he knows Mond wished he would have made. "I went back through the game," Fisher said. "[His] decision-making went well." Saturday's start was the 35th for Mond, the 27th under Fisher. "Kellen has played a lot of football and had a lot of experience and we'll keep playing and doing what we're doing and keep developing those other guys," Fisher said.

Mond is Fisher's starter for Saturday's game at second-ranked Alabama, but Fisher indicated a change is also possible based on results, which applies to any player. "You know, you're always [evaluating]," Fisher said. "If something happens and the team's not moving...but at the same time, [Mond] still did a lot of good things with the football." Mond initially was scheduled to speak on the team's weekly Zoom press conference, but he was replaced by running back Isaiah Spiller shortly before the start of the availability. After the game Saturday, Mond said he played pretty "clean." "I missed a couple of throws that I wish I could have back," Mond said. "I think that was Week 1, and me and the receivers were still building chemistry, but I think we're going to be a lot cleaner next week, because we have to be." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Quarterback Kellen Mond completed 17 of 28 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown despite struggling at times with accuracy. While he said he played a "clean" game, he also said he was somewhat surprised he didn't have a better connection with his wide receivers after an extended fall camp due to the later season start date. "I think I see both sides," Mond said. "It surprised me and I think Jhamon [Ausbon], with him opting out pretty late and Hezekiah Jones being down - at times it's really hard, especially with guys who haven't played in games, it's really different. Even going against scout team, that transition to playing against an actual opponent, it can be different." - Austin American Statesman
