  03/09/23 - Quinn EwersrJr/2026, Texas + More +

Every position is open for the Texas Longhorns this spring. Every player will earn his starting role. For that reason, Quinn Ewers will compete with Arch Manning and an injured Maalik Murphy. So, too, will Jaylan Ford compete with Jett Bush and Jalen Catalon compete with Michael Taaffe. There is no quarterback controversy at Texas. Barring an unforeseen collapse by Ewers, the 2022 starter will remain in the starting role in 2023. That's not an indictment of Manning.

Ewers is simply primed for a strong season this year should he put in the work necessary to thrive in the offense. Arch Manning has a bright future on the Forty Acres. He has the traits and athleticism to earn his own statue outside DKR Memorial Stadium by the end of his career. Manning is also a freshman, and would likely endure some of the same growing pains Ewers went through last season. Quinn Ewers will likely win the starting job. If he does, Texas should be in good hands. - USA Today

  03/07/23 - Arch ManningrFr/2028, Texas + More +

Freshman quarterback Arch Manning hit the field for the first time as Longhorn on Monday as Texas held its first practice of the spring. Manning is one of the more highly anticipated recruiting stories in quite some time at the college level. The former five-star prospect is the nephew of NFL legends Eli and Peyton Manning. While the last name holds significant weight, Arch has proved on the field he has earned all the hype given to him.

Manning threw for over 7,000 yards and nearly 80 touchdowns in his high school career, taking over records set by his uncles. In addition, he led Isidore Newman to the postseason each year as a starter. Manning is set to compete in an excellent Texas quarterback room with returning starter Quinn Ewers and talented second-year passer Maalik Murphy. - USA Today

  03/06/23 - Xavier WorthyJr/2024, Texas + More +

Texas began spring practice on Monday. Third-year head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke with the media and provided an injury update regarding several key players that will be limited to start spring ball. Jonathon Brooks, Jalen Catalon, Derion Gullette, Cole Hutson, Maalik Murphy, Isaiah Neyor, and Keilan Robinson will be limited and/or were limited on Monday.

However, one of the more interesting comments from Sarkisian had to do with the 2022 season. Sarkisian revealed that wide receiver Xavier Worthy played with a broken hand for the second half of the season. It's unclear why Sarkisian chose to keep this in-house, and even more mind-boggling why Texas' offense appeared to force feed the injured wide receiver so often. Worthy has certainly showed his toughness and what he's physically able to play through. - USA Today

Texas has added another target to its passing game. Former Georgia receiver Adonai Mitchell announced Friday night that he will transfer to Texas. The Longhorns confirmed the signing later in the night. Over two years at Georgia, Mitchell won two national championships. He averaged 14.7 yards on his 38 receptions. "New home, same mission," Mitchell tweeted. This past season, Mitchell appeared in six games and scored in both of Georgia's playoff games. As a freshman, he started 12 times and caught the go-ahead touchdown against Alabama in the national championship game.

The 6-foot-4, 190-pounder was rated as a four-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class. After the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian opined that it "kind of felt like all year we were searching for a third wideout." That shouldn't be a problem for Texas in 2023. Mitchell joins a receiving corps that's set to retain both Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington, who combined for 110 receptions, 1,412 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. - Austin American Statesman

Say so long to Adonai Mitchell. Georgia's popular wide receiver known as "A.D." entered his name into the transfer portal Wednesday, the last day of the NCAA's newly adopted, 45-day transfer period, according to an unattributed report by DawgsHQ.com. Mitchell's destination is unknown, but speculation is that he will land either at Texas or USC. A native of Missouri City, Texas, Mitchell graduated from Cane Ridge High in Nashville, Tenn., in 2021. Neither Mitchell nor his high school coach could be reached for comment Wednesday. Mitchell was considered the Bulldogs' top receiver entering the 2022 season.

However, he played in only six games because of a high-ankle sprain sustained on the first play of Georgia's second game. However, with touchdown receptions in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl and the College Football Playoff Championship game, Mitchell is thought to be the first player to catch a touchdown pass in every CFP game in which he played. He leaves UGA 4-for-4 on that front. Wednesday represented the end of the NCAA's transfer period. Beginning Dec. 5, there is a 45-day window adopted by a membership vote last summer that establishes beginning and end dates to the period in which players can explore the prospect of transferring to another school. The transfer portal is a list serve maintained by the NCAA that is accessible to member schools. There's another window that starts May 1 and lasts 15 days. It was designed for players who may seek a change following spring practice. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

  01/14/23 - Jaylan FordSr/2024, Texas + More +

No. 41 is not done. Jaylan Ford announced on Saturday that he will return to Texas for his senior season. A 6-3, 234-pound linebacker, Ford shined during his third season with the Longhorns. During his breakout season, Ford led Texas with his 119 tackles. Ford also intercepted four passes and forced three fumbles. Ford recovered fumbles in the final minutes of UT's close wins over Iowa State and Kansas State.

Ford was beaten out by Kansas State defensive lineman Felix Anudike-Uzomah for the Big 12 defensive player of the year award. He did earn All-American accolades from the Associated Press. Following a 27-20 loss to Washington in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 27, Ford wouldn't say whether he'd enter the NFL Draft or stay in school. Ford promised reporters that "I'll definitely come with an answer here soon." - Austin American Statesman

Big news for the Longhorns as starting right tackle Christian Jones announced he is returning to Texas for the 2023 season.
